Mallorca are the unlikely early pace-setters after Fer Nino's late winner at Alaves. The Balearic side have four points from their opening two games but Barcelona can leapfrog them if they get a point this evening.

Valencia sit in second after an 88th-minute penalty rescued a point at Granada. In today's other game, Espanyol and Villareal ended goalless.

Defending champions Atletico Madrid host Elche tomorrow (18:30 BST) while neighbours Real Madrid travel to Levante (21:00 BST).

A couple of first-half bookings to tell you about:

Inigo Martinez picked up a yellow for dissent and Eric Garcia was also booked for a foul earlier on.

  4. HALF-TIMEpublished at 21:48 British Summer Time 21 August 2021

    HT: Athletic Bilbao 0-0 Barcelona

A vibrant first half comes to an end.

Athletic Bilbao have been brilliant but that disallowed goal on the stroke of half-time proves Barcelona are still very much in this.

  5. DISALLOWED GOALpublished at 21:48 British Summer Time 21 August 2021

    Athletic Bilbao 0-0 Barcelona

Barcelona think they're ahead - and in some style with a bicycle kick from centre-back Ronald Araujo.

Martin Braithwaite heads Jordi Alba's ball across, Julen Agirrezabala fumbles and Araujo shows extraordinary balance to scoop it back over his head and into the far corner.

The referee instantly rules it out though, penalising Braithwaite for climbing.

    Athletic Bilbao 0-0 Barcelona

Inaki Williams is confident this evening.

The ball drops 40 yards out and he can't resist a dipping volley. To be fair, I was shouting "Hit it!" and he caught it well.

Straight down the throat of Neto though.

Barca have had more than 60% possession but, bar Martin Braithwaite's missed sitter, they've barely threatened.

All the action is down near Neto's end at the moment.

Can Athletic Bilbao get the goal their play has deserved?

  8. CLOSE!published at 32 mins

    Athletic Bilbao 0-0 Barcelona

Immediately,Athletic Bilbao look to capitalise on the rejig at the back for Barcelona.

Alex Berengeur nips across to the left, pulls it into the middle but his cross is behind Inaki Williams and he can only head over.

  9. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 30 mins

    Athletic Bilbao 0-0 Barcelona

Gerard Pique has a problem. He probably just wants to get away from this Athletic Bilbao press although I wouldn't be surprised if they followed him to the dressing room.

Off he limps and on comes Ronald Araujo.

He takes Pique's place in the heart of the Barca defence with Eric Garcia.

    Athletic Bilbao 0-0 Barcelona

Jurgen Klopp would be proud of this. Athletic Bilbao are pressing as one Basque unit and forcing Barcelona into mistakes.

Inaki Williams again causes problems, escaping down the right and cutting back.

Unai Vencedor times his arrival perfectly but he doesn't make clean contact and can only screw it wide.

    Athletic Bilbao 0-0 Barcelona

Athletic Bilbao want a penalty as Alex Berengeur miskicks Iker Muniain's cross in front of goal and then falls over a challenge from Jordi Alba.

The ball is recycled and Gerard Pique gets a desperate header away. Barcelona are looking pretty shaky at the back.

There's a break in play as Alba gets a bit of treatment but he's fine to carry on.

    Athletic Bilbao 0-0 Barcelona

Memphis Depay licks his lips as he lines up a free kick from 25 yards.

He jogs forward and then his limp shot bounces once before reaching the grateful hands of Julen Agirrezabala in the Athletic Bilbao goal.

What a block from Frenkie de Jong.

Neto has been really shaky with his feet so far and again Inaki Williams has got in his face to force an error.

Ohian Sancet nips in, squares to Williams but he takes too long and De Jong gets back to brilliantly divert his shot behind.

There aren't that many of them but the Bilbao fans are making quite an atmosphere.

And their team are responding at the moment.

    Athletic Bilbao 0-0 Barcelona

From the corner, the ball arrives at the feet of Ohian Sancet who spins and unleashes a vicious shot.

Neto is rooted to the spot but the ball clatters off the underside of the bar and bounces to safety.

    It's been a pulsating start.

  16. CLOSE!published at 10 mins

    Athletic Bilbao 0-0 Barcelona

A lucky escape from Eric Garcia. Ohian Sancet's hopeful loop forward has Garcia backpedalling, chased by the tenacious Inaki Willliams.

Garcia waits for his keeper Neto but he doesn't come out and Williams manages to dig out a shot. Neto somehow smuggles it behind.

  17. CLOSE!published at 7 mins

    Athletic Bilbao 0-0 Barcelona

Wow it should be 1-0 to Barcelona - and from their first attack.

Memphis Depay shows excellent close control to escape down the right, he cuts inside and gifts it to Martin Braithwaite six yards out.

It's an open goal but he skies it.

  18. Postpublished at 4 mins

    Athletic Bilbao 0-0 Barcelona

It's relentless pressing from Bilbao in these early stages.

Sergino Dest is the latest to miscontrol a pass from goalkeeper Neto and give the ball away deep in Barca territory.

It comes to nothing but Ronald Koeman's side haven't been out of their own half yet.

  19. Postpublished at 1 min

    Athletic Bilbao 0-0 Barcelona

A bit of pressure early on from the hosts forces Jordi Alba to give away a throw-in.

Inaki Williams darts in at the near post and his shot is deflected behind.

Bilbao are up for this one.
