In League One tonight, it’s tight at the top with just one point separating the top four.

Leaders Plymouth host Bolton, while second placed Wycombe, who have won their last four on the bounce, travel north to fifth-placed Rotherham, who haven’t lost in their last six matches either.

Third-placed Wigan face MK Dons, and Sunderland, in fourth, travel to Crewe.

At the other end of the table, Wimbledon are looking for their first win in six against Lincoln and Gillingham are looking to end a three-match losing streak at home to rock bottom Doncaster.

  2. Can Rangers or Rovers sneak into play-offs?published at 19:38 British Summer Time 19 October 2021

    QPR v Blackburn (19:45 BST)

Both QPR and Blackburn lost ground on the top six last time out and will be looking to put things right tonight.

QPR were heavily beaten by West London rivals Fulham 4-1 as they slumped to their fourth defeat in six matches.

Whereas Blackburn were leading Coventry 2-0 at half-time only to draw the match 2-2 thanks to some sloppy defending.

Both sides could sneak into the top six with a win before their main play-off rivals play tomorrow.

With the likes of Lyndon Dykes and Ben Brereton Diaz on the pitch, expect a cracker.

    Derby v Luton (19:45 BST)

The last time Derby County lost at home to Luton Town, they were still at the old Baseball Ground.

It was a May afternoon in 1990 when two goals from boyish wing-wizard Kingsley Black and another from Tim Breacker helped the Hatters to a 3-2 win that also saw them avoid the drop on goal difference in the old First Division.

I won't let this entry dissolve into a sepia-tinged nostalgia fest any more than it has done already, not wishing to alienate half of you reading this.

Meanwhile, there haven't been that many meetings since in the 31 years that followed. Just nine to be precise.

Derby, with their points deduction and financial issues, are desperate to avoid tumbling into the depths of League One and beyond; a whirlpool that spirals menacingly.

Luton know all about that, having dropped from Championship to the National League on the back of their own deductions and off-field wrangles. Their subsequent rise is a lesson to all clubs that good management, ownership and hugely loyal support can turn it round.

The deduction disguises a Rams side who are coping admirably with their issues on the field, while Luton continue to punch hard and above their weight under Nathan Jones. Should be a tasty encounter.

  4. Will Forest revival continue?published at 19:35 British Summer Time 19 October 2021

Bristol City v Nottingham Forest (19:45 BST)

Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper's stock is continuing to rise.

Last weekend Forest extended their unbeaten run to five games under their new boss with victory over Blackpool - their first home win of the season.

They now make the trip to Bristol City looking to post their fifth Championship win in six matches.

The Reds are in much finer form than the Robins who find themselves in a bit of a slump after two defeats in their past three fixtures.

Nigel Pearson's side have also failed to win at their home ground in 16 successive outings, a record which stretches all the way back to February.

Think of Sheffield United and Millwall coming together, and the word 'drama' springs to mind.

It's Kevin Muscat losing it with Paddy Kenny in the tunnel and both getting sent-off, Phil Jagielka going in goal and the Blades winning at the Den, with Neil Warnock making his 'feelings' known to each Millwall player as he greeted them off the pitch.

It's Blades defender John Egan sent-off for stopping a goal via deliberate handball and the Lions scoring a 94th-minute equaliser through Jake Cooper to cancel out Gary Madine's opener.

With Sheffield United back on track at the weekend after a 2-1 win against Stoke and Millwall's own run coming to an end against Luton, the scene is set for yet more excitement at Bramall Lane.

  6. Can the Cherries do it on a cold night in Stoke?published at 19:30 British Summer Time 19 October 2021

    Stoke v Bournemouth (19:45 BST)

For some reason, the barometer of whether someone has the 'minerals' to hack it in the hurly-burly world of English football has boiled down to being able to 'do your thing' so to speak, on a cold, wet, windy night at Stoke's Bet365 Stadium.

Understandably so in a way, as the wind whips through their 'cathedral on the hill' in a way which turns extremities blue. It's the gaps in the stands that seem to do it.

Chuck in a 'warm' welcome from the patrons of the Potters' New Boothen End (the last time they stood on the old one was 24 years ago to be honest) and it's no wonder that the litmus test of toughness is gauged in this part of urban Staffordshire.

Michael O'Neill's side are unbeaten on their home patch this term, perhaps proving the adage true, with seven wins from eight.

Scott Parker, with his immaculate tailoring and side-parting, is almost the antithesis of 'tough' Stokie. But he and his Bournemouth side can mix it and they're unbeaten barring an EFL Cup exit to Norwich.

Can they do it on a cold, wet, windy night in Stoke? One to watch for sure.

Of course, we can't always get to the game. Life gets in the way.

Fear not. While we might not be able to bring you the heady scent of burgers, fried onions and spilt lager, we can at least keep you in the loop with goings on in the Championship, League One and League Two.

    Let's crack on.

Oh, how the heartstrings are tugged by the thoughts of cold Autumnal nights meandering like moths to the flame of floodlights casting their glow high on the horizon.

Past the hot-dog sellers, with the sizzle of onions. Past the pin-badge stall with their shining hoard. Past the programme seller and those digging deep for change to buy one.

Past the boozers, packed full of excited voices, pints being slurped greedily amid the throng. Condensation on the window.

Then it's in. The clank of the turnstile, the 'bip' of the scanner on the ticket and the slow climb up the steps.

The first sight of the pitch, the rawness of the green in the ultra-brightness of the lights. Find your seat. Sit yourself down. Coat zipped to the top. Scarf on. The sensory overload begins.
