  4. 'Roger Hunt will never be forgotten by the Kop'published at 13:23 British Summer Time 28 September 2021

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Journalist and Liverpool fan Tony Evans has also been on BBC Radio 5 Live paying tribute to Roger Hunt: "He's one of the greats, he was at the club when Bill Shankly arrived and Shankly had a massive clear out and got rid of 24 players but he kept Roger Hunt.

"Roger Hunt and Bill Shankly were integral in Liverpool's journey from the old Second Division the second tier of English football to one of the European powers.

"Roger Hunt will never be forgotten by the Kop but in many ways he was the forgotten man of England's 1966 team because accolades went elsewhere but Hunt did all the hard work, he ran the hard yards.

"Sadly Jimmy Greaves died last week and people talk about Jimmy Greaves not getting in the team for the final, well Roger Hunt's place was never under threat because Sir Alf Ramsey was going to pick Roger Hunt no matter what happened.

"The interesting thing about Roger Hunt was he was such a quiet person and the word that keeps coming up is humble. He had no ego, no arrogance.

"Everyone who met him and spoke to him, he gave you time, he looked you in the eye and he listened to what you had to say, he was just a lovely, lovely man."

    John Murray
    BBC 5 Live commentator

Commentator John Murray has been on BBC Radio 5 Live reflecting on the sad passing of Roger Hunt: "Roger Hunt holds a genuinely lofty place in the entire history of football in this country.

"You just have to point up the fact that he was part of England's World Cup winning team of 1966. He started all six matches at that World Cup, scored three goals in the group stages and coupled with that he was one of Liverpool's greatest players.

"Only Ian Rush has scored more goals in all competitions than Roger Hunt did.

"We know Liverpool's standing as a football club, not just in this country but around the world, so, that puts it very simply, he was truly one of the greats."

  11. Klopp pays Hunt tributepublished at 12:56 British Summer Time 28 September 2021

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has spoken about the passing of the club's former striker Roger Hunt, who has died at the age of 83.

Hunt made 492 appearances for the Reds, scoring 285 goals, making him the club's second highest goalscorer.

“It’s really sad news and our thoughts and our love go to his family,” Klopp said., external

“Unfortunately, it feels too frequent in this moment we are saying farewell to these giants of our club.

“Roger Hunt comes second to no-one in his importance in the history of Liverpool FC, that much is clear.

“To be the goalscoring catalyst of the Shankly team to actually achieve promotion and then go on to win those precious league titles and the FA Cup puts him in a bracket of LFC legends who are responsible for making us the club we are today. Not only that, he was also a World Cup winner in 1966, too.

“I am told the Kop christened him 'Sir Roger' for all his achievements. A goalscorer who never stopped working to help his teammates; I believe he would have fit in well within our current team.

“So, it is Sir Roger we will remember, honour and pay tribute to over the coming days.

    “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

  15. 'Jonny's presence speaks for itself'published at 11:54 British Summer Time 28 September 2021

Leicester City defender Jonny Evans has returned to the Northern Ireland squad for October's World Cup qualifiers in Switzerland and Bulgaria.

The 33-year-old missed September's qualifiers with Lithuania and Switzerland with a foot injury.

Evans managed his first full 90 minutes of the season in Leicester's League Cup win over Millwall on 22 September.

Stuart Dallas, Corry Evans and Josh Magennis also return after missing September's matches.

Manager Ian Baraclough said it is important to "build on the momentum" his side have put together.

He added the return of the Evans brothers, Dallas and Magennis is "big for the group", and said he will manage Jonny Evans' game time to ensure he gets the best out of the defender.

"Jonny's presence and experience speaks for itself, and hopefully he comes through this week's games to be able to join up with us," said Baraclough.

"Managing him, and Brendan [Rodgers, Leicester City manager] is doing that at the club, is important. I'll be guided by him and the medical people.

"We are not going to put anyone at risk or gamble with anyone, and Jonny is in as good a position as anyone to make that call.

"We will make sure when he does come into camp we will look after him properly and make sure he is right. If he is not quite right, then between myself, Jonny and Brendan we will make that call."

  17. Simeone: 'Atletico must evolve'published at 11:37 British Summer Time 28 September 2021

AC Milan v Atletico Madrid (20:00 BST)

Diego Simeone wants his Atletico Madrid side to evolve if they are to keep competing for the highest honours as they prepare to face AC Milan in the Champions League tonight.

Los Rojiblancos are facing the prospect of playing catch up in a tough group, which also includes Liverpool and Porto, if they don't win in Milan, after only drawing with the Portuguese outfit. Alaves inflicted the Spanish champions' first defeat of the season at the weekend. Atletico have only won twice in six games and failed to score in three of their last four.

"We're coming off a season in which teams got to know us and they're working as a result on our strong points," Simeone told a news conference. "We will have to evolve, change and look for other ways when these situations appear. In several of the games we've played the other team has looked to take the space away from us," Simeone added.

"It will be a hard game and we will have to try and take it into areas where we can hurt them," Simeone said of the trip to the San Siro.

  18. 'It's time for Solskjaer to prove himself'published at 11:32 British Summer Time 28 September 2021

Manchester United v Villarreal (Wednesday, 20:00 BST)

Micah Richards column graphicImage source, BBC Sport

BBC pundit Micah Richards says Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to show signs of progress when he takes on Villarreal in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Part of the problem Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has as Manchester United manager is that there is an over-reaction each time he wins - and also to every defeat.

That's down to the size of the club and United's recent history, when they won so much. Expectations are so high that when they don't perform there is always going to be a backlash.

United lost their opening game in Group F against Young Boys.
