Portugal were late additions to the Euro 2022 line-up, coming in after Russia were excluded due to the country's invasion of Ukraine.

Francisco Neto's side, who lost 1-0 to Russia in the Euro play-offs, were named as their replacements in May.

While it wasn't the ideal way of qualifying for this summer's competition, captain Dolores Silva said her side aren't just here to make up numbers.

The midfielder told BBC World Service's World Football: "It's a great sensation and we are happy for it.

"Obviously it was not the way that we wanted - we cannot forget there is still a war going on - but suddenly we can be at the Euros. It feels really great.

"I was planning to go on vacation. I didn't expect to be there. Everyone was thinking about holidays."

Today's Group C opener is the first of four Euro 2022 matches taking place at Leigh Sports Village.

With a capacity of 7,800, the stadium was one which caused debate as one of the venues chosen to hose the tournament due to its size and profile.

But here's why seeing Euro 2022 stars in small stadiums is a good thing
