    England

England captain Leah Williamson, speaking to BBC: "We have immense respect for them. They’re the best at it. We knew our strengths and how vulnerable they could be. We were solid. I’m proud of the girls. The goal was one of those moments - a lapse in concentration. That's the shift from group mentality to knockouts. We’ve proved we're resilient and can overcome tests. I’m so proud of them. We’re serious. We back ourselves. We don’t get caught up in it. At not one point did I think we were going home.

"Sorry to mum and dad that you have work tomorrow and I’ve delayed returning home. I’m sorry to the whole nation but I hope you’re buzzing like me."

England came from behind to win a game at the Women’s Euros for just the second time (P17 W2 D1 L14), previously doing so against Russia in 2009 (3-2).

The Lionesses have never lost against Spain when facing them in their home country (P8 W5 D3), while they have won five of the six such meetings that have taken place this century (D1).

England have also progressed from all three of their quarter-final encounters at the Euros (2009, 2017 & 2022), while Spain have been eliminated from all three of theirs in successive editions (2013, 2017 & 2022).

  11. 'A crazy day'published at 23:19 British Summer Time 20 July 2022

    FT: England 2-1 Spain

    England

England boss Sarina Wiegman, speaking to BBC: "The whole game was a test. The level of this game was so high. I haven’t experienced that too much. We know Spain are a very good team especially in possession. We did pretty well too.

"In terms of a test and a setback and how we came back, we stuck to it with being together as a team trying to score. Plan B was also [used for] a couple of minutes in and then we scored. Then we went back. I’m so proud of the teams. Incredible.

"The fans behind us, you could feel it. This is home advantage.

"Worried is a big word. We were behind and knew we had to do something. We scored quickly after doing that so we could go back into our normal shape. Incredible. [You’re] concerned otherwise [you] don’t change shape a little bit. Nice that it worked.

"A crazy day, especially today. I came with the team late, prepared, trying to stay calm yourself. I won’t forget this day."

The game management from young players like Chloe Kelly, she knew when to hold the ball up. This England team showed everything about them. The subs, all round a brilliant performance.

You have to question the Spanish manager. The subs changed the dynamic. They allowed England to get back into the game.

Once again the subs coming on… We had a spark about us.

  15. 'England found a way'published at 23:07 British Summer Time 20 July 2022

    FT: England 2-1 Spain

    Ian Wright
Former England striker on BBC One

Great night. Congratulations to the team. Spain were brilliant tonight. We showed grit and determination. People questioned what they could do against a good team. We came back in it and we won the game.

The Spain manager took off Gonzalez. At one stage they had nobody up front. You have to feel sorry for the Spain ladies.

Spain played us off the park but we found a way to get it done.

This [Stanway's winner] is what it’s about. Spain are running backwards, they’re inviting her to shoot. Absolutely magnificent. I’m so pleased for her.

When it looked like England were down and had nothing left to give, they just found that spark. It came from being direct and you just never know what can happen when you do it like that. They have the belief and the desire, but Sarina Wiegman has come in and helped get them over the line in games like this.
