Justine Vanhaevermaet is going to be massive for Belgium. She's known for her presence, defending set-pieces but also her attacking threat.

She's a leader, she talks and she really has high standards for herself. If she doesn't perform well, she will beat herself up about it.

She's someone in this Belgium team with a lot of experience, having played in England. She will be huge for Belgium, particularly protecting the back four.

  2. 'Sweden are aggressive'published at 19:58 British Summer Time 22 July 2022

    Sweden v Belgium (20:00 BST)

    Jonas Eidevall
    Arsenal manager on BBC Two

Sweden always try to force their opponent to play out to the left - you can see that in every game they play. They set traps there, they step in and they're very aggressive.

They force the opponent to play short passes and then swarm the ball - most of the time they are trying to get Fridolina Rolfo on the ball.

This is Chris who was born near Glasgow, now lives in Birmingham and spent one year working in Gothenburg, Sweden.

There is no doubt about who he is supporting tonight and earlier he was displaying his colours proudly in front of the mural for Leigh-born musician Pete Shelley of the Buzzcocks.

"I'm a Celtic fan and I've always had an affinity with Sweden since Henrik Larsson played for us," says Chris.

Should Sweden get past Belgium, he will be at Bramall Lane, Sheffield, next Tuesday for the semi-final with England.

"I haven't got a ticket yet but I'm determined to be there and show my support for Sweden," he adds.

    Sweden v Belgium (20:00 BST)

Sweden have only won two of their nine Women's Euros knockout games.

Those wins were the 2001 semi-final against Denmark and 2013 quarter-final against Iceland.

  6. Sweden pole positionpublished at 19:53 British Summer Time 22 July 2022

    Sweden v Belgium (20:00 BST)

    Izzy Christiansen
Everton and England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

A lot of people before the tournament tipped Sweden to go and win the tournament. I was one of those.

That may mean trying to win at all costs, but if you get yourself into the semi-finals - you are one of four teams who can win the tournament.

In knockout football, things are so much different. The complexity of the game and what's at stake, almost tactically things change a lot because the stakes are higher and have no security of another group match.

Belgium scored the joint-fewest goals (three), and had the fewest shots (21), shots on target (11) and lowest expected goals total (2.6) in the group stages of the eight quarter-finalists.

There was a street trader selling mobile fans to supporters in sweltering conditions the last time Sweden were in Leigh five days ago.

Sadly, fans will not be required tonight. It has been raining in Greater Manchester but that has not dampened the spirits of Belgium's travelling fans.

Arnaud left his home in Luxembourg at 10pm last night to drive to Brussels to catch a supporters coach to Calais. The coach arrived in Dover this morning before driving up to Leigh.

"It's well worth the effort to be here," says Arnaud. "We have done so well to get this far. We play as a team - not as individuals. Hopefully that will make us stronger."

    Sweden v Belgium (20:00 BST)

    Belgium

Belgium head coach Ives Serneels speaking on BBC Two: "We know today there is only one winner - it was the same against Italy.

"We are also realists that we are playing a very strong team but we will try to do everything in our hands and our qualities to give something today.

"Little bit nervous but it's OK - it's not nerves in a negative way."

    Sweden

"Today we have this and we have good people who can come in and play this game."

I asked this lot about Sweden's chances against England should they see off Belgium.

"Put it this way, football is NOT coming home," said one in perfect English.

    Ouch.

  14. Belgium can cause major upsetspublished at 19:41 British Summer Time 22 July 2022

    Sweden v Belgium (20:00 BST)

    Natasha Dowie
Reading and England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Belgium have been tough, disciplined, compact and hard to beat but I just think what Sweden have going forward, Belgium don't have. Sweden have too much fire power so I think this game should be won in 90 minutes.

I also think Belgium getting to where they have - history makers. They want to go on to try and achieve even more.

This was the sight that greeted the players of Sweden and Belgium when they made their way into the ground earlier.

Strong tropical vibes as this three-piece steel band made it sound like touch down in the Bahamas rather than Leigh.

If only we had some Caribbean weather. The floodlights have been on for several hours and the skies are slate grey rather than blue.

The good news is there hasn't been any rain for a few hours. Small mercies and all that.

It's a hive of activity as both squads are put through their paces with their final warm-ups on the pitch here in Leigh.

Goalkeeping practice, shooting drills from all angles and a keepy-uppy type game seem to be the order of the day.

Sweden are massive favourites. I'm lucky enough to have played with the likes of Asllani at Linkoping.

She's a terrific player and very successful, has played at the biggest clubs around the world. Lina Hurtig as well and Filippa Angeldahl, who is having a terrific tournament. They are all performing so well.
