Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It's a big win, an important win. The first half was outstanding. We challenged the players - can we come here, keep a clean sheet and win? They did that. It comes off a very challenging week.

"The application they gave at Anfield - I have no complaints. The players maxed out there. We’ve had a couple of Covid cases among the players and staff.

"It’s a bright start, but it’s my job to keep pushing the standards. We’ll get ready for a really tough challenge against Burnley. We need to be ready."

On Jacob Ramsey: "He scored a fantastic goal. I thought his all-round performance was outstanding. He has a bright future for sure."

On new Covid regulations: "I made a personal decision on Sunday just to call training. It’s tough for every manager. We have to make sure we’re very diligent with the guidelines. Nobody wants to see the situation deteriorate. We all have to follow the instructions."

Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola told BT Sport: "Congratulations to the team, it was a good performance for us.

"We did a good performance, the vibes of the stadium was nice today - it was sold out and the supporters were incredible.

"We started in a good rhythm and our central defenders made good build-up. We were patient with the ball and the quality of the players did the rest.

"We lost five points last season when we played Leeds.

"We tried to prepare well for the game. The players, maybe they felt, that it is a more serious team that people think. I know exactly which manager conducts this team. The pride they have every since game, with every single ball. We saw the game against Chelsea, they deserved to take at least one point. The way they fought, maybe they were a little tired as they played just two days ago.

"That is why I give credit for the victory because I am pretty sure that every opponent knows what it is to play Leeds. Now we rest and prepare for Newcastle on Sunday.

"When you get these results it's because individually they [the players] are brilliant."

Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola to BBC Sport: "We are solid in behind, we concede few chances. The team are performing very well.

"The last two or three days in training I said this guy [Kevin de Bruyne] is humble enough to accept he has to work.

"He's phenomenal. We need him. He's so important for us.

"He [Jack Grealish] plays exceptional. I don't judge players for their goals. I want to see how they behave and their decisions.

"He can play in three or four positions.

"They are so honest and humble guys. John Stones plays centre-back for the national team but we needed him at full-back. I'm very pleased for him.

"We are proud of the way we're playing."

Norwich City

Norwich manager Dean Smith, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "The first half was miles off where we want to be. We can’t allow a player to run from the halfway line without laying a glove on him.

"It looked like we were playing low-risk football, which is not what we asked. We’re missing around eight players that could play in the first team at the moment.

"The last few games have been frustrating because of our finishing. Tonight it was frustrating because of our first-half performance. You’re not going to win anything playing like that.

"It’s a mountain we believe we can climb. We’ve got good players in the squad, we know that. Unfortunately it wasn’t good enough tonight."

• Norwich’s haul of just 10 points from their first 17 Premier League games this season (won two, drew four, lost 11) is their worst-ever return at this stage of a top-flight campaign.
• Only Manchester City (18) and Liverpool (15) have accrued more Premier League points than Aston Villa since Steven Gerrard took charge of the club in November (12).
• Norwich have never won a Premier League game on a Tuesday before (drew four, lost 12), with only West Brom playing more games on a specific weekday without victory in the competition (32 on Tuesdays).
• Steven Gerrard has picked up 12 points from his first six Premier League games as Aston Villa boss, a haul only John Gregory (15) bettered in his first six with the club in 1998 (Martin O’Neill also racked up 12 from six in 2006).

Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard, talking to BT Sport: "It was a really strong away performance. I thought we controlled large parts of this game - we were difficult to play against and looked really dangerous.

"At 1-0 you always run the risk [of conceding] so it was nice to see Ollie finish it off. The academy deserves a lot of credit. We've some top coaches and we need to keep developing it as we want as many local home-grown players that we can have.

"It has been a challenging week, we lost one to injury, a couple to Covid and some members of staff as well.

"It's been a positive start for me and we've started how we wanted to do and had some really tough games against [Manchester] City and Liverpool."

On Jacob Ramsey's opening goal, Gerrard added: "As a midfielder you can only applaud that kind of play and to then unleash a shot like that, it should be in the run for goal of the month."

This was Manchester City’s joint-second largest ever top-flight league win, behind only their 8-0 victory over Watford in September 2019.

Leeds have picked up 16 points in their 17 Premier League games this season.

Adjusting to three points for a win, only in 1930-31 have they had fewer at this stage of any league campaign (14).

Leeds United

Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa to BBC MOTD...

Did he think it would be so difficult? "No way. I didn't think the differences would be the ones we saw.

"They didn't surprise me. What I'm saying is that we didn't do anything well, we didn't defend well, we didn't mange the ball, there is nothing to take away from the game.

"When a team, the individual and collective have nothing worth valuing it is not the problem of the individuals but the conduction.

"Coming into this game we knew what we had to prevent the opponent from doing. Nothing unexpected happened, nothing surprising.

"We came to do what we expected and we weren't able to do it.

"This is clearly a problem with the conduction."

When asked if it was the most disappointing performance Leeds have produced in the Premier League, Bielsa said? "Yes, of course."

Aston Villa

Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It was a hard game at times. Norwich had a lot of the ball, but we dug in to get the three points. We showed them respect. They haven’t been great but at home they could have got a goal and made it hard."

"Jacob [Ramsey] has all the attributes to become a top player. I got fouled on the halfway line so I was just watching him do the rest. It was a tap-in at the end – I’ll take that every day of the week.

"There’s a real hunger in the squad to push on and make the most of what we have in the squad. I think we’re starting to gel together now and want to keep pushing up the league.

"We’ve come up against some big teams. We felt like we could have taken a draw against Liverpool [on Saturday]. I feel like we’re a hard team to beat. Every game we should be looking to win."

On facing former Villa manager Dean Smith: "It’s strange, but it’s football. That’s the past, we need to focus on the future. The boys are enjoying the new manager and the new ideas he’s bringing to us. We’re buying into it."

Norwich City

Norwich City manager Dean Smith told BT Sport: "It's tough, we weren't very good in the first half. We've been missing eight that could've been in the first team but I'm not making excuses, we never played with any tempo and were too passive.

"We got what we deserved in the first half. We improved the tempo in the second half but we have to improve the moments in the final third. It's hard when you've eight of your first team not available.

"We've a lad in Sam Byram who came in for his first appearance in two years. We're down to the bare bones and have got some Covid issues too. We've had to speak to the Premier League on advice on where to go, not that they've done a lot.

"Our consistency needs to be better. We can't be as good as we were against Manchester United and then be so low in the first half. If this was an impossible job I wouldn't have taken it. We've had some performances here but that was the first time we were below the standard."

Manchester City have equalled the top-flight record for most wins in a single calendar year - 33 by Liverpool in 1982.

Chelsea's 32 in 2005 was the Premier League record.

Manchester City

Manchester City's Kevin de Bruyne to BBC Sport: "I just think we played really well as a team. We started really well and we found the openings at the right time.

"It's been a great game for us. A lot of different guys scored, it gave confidence to everyone.

"It [goal difference] is not something we should think about at the moment. We just need to perform well and try to win."

Manchester City

Kevin de Bruyne, who scored twice for City, told BT Sport: "A lot has happened this year, a little bit out of out of my control. The only thing I could do is work hard and come back as quick as possible. It's unfortunate with everything that has happened and at the time I was coming back I got Covid. It happened and now we are working hard to come back to a good level.

"I think we played incredibly well, especially against the way they pressed. We found the right times to attack them. When were were 3-0 or 4-0 up it gets tough for them and they tried to keep it tight in the second half, but we had a lot of chances to score more.

"It's good for everybody, a lot of people who maybe didn't play a lot played today and chipped in. For the whole team it is a booster."

Leeds United

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa to BT Sport: "There is nothing positive to take away from our performance.

"I can't find anything that can be valued. When there's nothing that's well done, it's not individualities that fail, but the conduction and organisation. There's no justification I can offer. The game was exactly how we thought it would be. We prepared ourselves to avoid everything that happened. We didn't manage to get anything.

"It [their usual style] is what we tried the whole game. Surely if we'd done the opposite, we would be lamented for not attempting anything to take away possesion from the opponent.

"What we attempted generated danger in our own goal. We didn't do anything well. That was evident in the scoreline.

"I insist everything that happened was what we wanted to avoid. As there's nothing to take from it, it's inevitable I have to take responsibility for a defeat of this type.

"We've never had a performance like the one today."

That was Leeds' joint biggest defeat in any competition since joining the Football League in 1920.

They lost 8-1 to Stoke in 1934, 7-0 to West Ham in 1966 and 7-0 to Arsenal in 1979.

Aston Villa

Jacob Ramsey, who scored Villa's first goal, told BT Sport: "It was a big win, Norwich were a good side, especially in the second half.

"In the first half we were outstanding on and off the ball so it's a good win. I saw Ollie [Watkins] knock it off, there was no-one there so I thought 'why not?'

"I've been watching clips of the gaffer [Steven Gerrard] and he was one of the best goalscoring midfielders and that's what I want to be.

"We've got a good Academy and our bench was full of them today. We have a feel-good factor now."
