  1. League One latestpublished at 15:10 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2021

    Sunderland 1-0 Oxford

The first goal of the day in League One comes at the Stadium of Light where Leon Dajaku has given Sunderland an early lead.

It's an important game for the Black Cats today in their bid to close the gap on the rest of the promotion chasers as one of their fans has pointed out....

Parker: Today is massive in every sense. Win and we put ourselves right amongst it. Lose and we'll have been beaten by 5 of the top 10 which wouldn't scream automatic promotion contenders if anyone is being realistic. No margin for error.

The game is paused and both sets of fans are on their feet at The Den to pay tribute to the life of Birmingham supporter Arthur Labinjo-Hughes who died at the age of six in June last year.

On Friday Arthur's stepmother and his father were sentenced for his death.

Emma Tustin, 32, was jailed for 29 years for torturing and murdering Arthur at her home in Solihull in 2020.

Arthur's father, Thomas Hughes, received a 21-year-sentence for his son's manslaughter.

Many other clubs around the country are also marking his life with a minute's applause in the sixth minute of their games.

Peterborough have been shipping goals this season - 38 of them - the most in the Championship.

Whilst their rivals divert their attention to the FA Cup, these two teams can show they really are only concentrating on the league.

Being dumped out in the first round means both Sunderland and Oxford are missing out on the glory of a cup run but that won’t matter one bit if they’re celebrating promotion come May.

That’s a long way off yet and League One has been really competitive this season. Sunderland are looking to reel in the teams in the automatic promotion spots, with their opponents looking to join them in the play-off positions.

Oxford have struggled on the road this season whilst Sunderland’s home form is, actually, only bettered by the U's.

So, on paper, this looks like a home win. But who would ever make such bold statements in a league as unpredictable as this?!

The Mackems’ Ross Stewart may have been nicknamed the ‘Loch Ness Drogba’ but Lee Johnson says he wants to see more from his 10-goal man. Today could be his day.

Oxford's 12-goal midfield and striker duo of James Henry and Matt Taylor will have something to say about that though.

The U's come into this six league games unbeaten and a stalemate with Rotherham last time out shows they can at least match the best. I’m really hoping this isn’t another 0-0 though!

    League One fixtures

Most of the teams in League One are either in FA Cup action or sitting with their feet up this weekend but there are two third-tier games.

In Lancashire, Accrington host managerless strugglers Fleetwood in a derby that both teams will be targetting points in.

Up on Wearside there's a clash between two promotion hopefuls as Sunderland welcome Oxford United.

A win would take the Black Cats level on points with the top two.

Both of those games start at 15:00 GMT.

Two sides in need of a win, Blackpool and Luton, meet at Bloomfield Road this afternoon.

Blackpool are without a win in five matches, but are still handily placed in 11th, while Nathan Jones' Luton have lost three of their past four games.

Another club who could do with victory are Millwall. Three 1-1 draws and a defeat by Hull last time out has brought some good momentum to a halt. The Lions face a Birmingham team who are with them in a congested mid-table.

Nottingham Forest have also been the draw kings lately, with five out of their past six ending all square.

Today they take on a Peterborough side who have only picked up two points from six games and are four points from safety.

Cardiff v Sheffield United (15:00 GMT)

Two sides who have finally found some form after difficult starts to the season meet in south Wales.

Cardiff have won three of their past four games under new boss Steve Morison, while Sheffield United, who are also under new management with Paul Heckingbottom in charge, have won back-to-back matches.

Another victory today for the Bluebirds could take them seven points clear of the drop zone, while three points for the mid-table Blades would boost any play-off ambitions they may have.

  10. Boro and Swans looking uppublished at 14:47 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2021

    Middlesbrough v Swansea (15:00 GMT)

Two teams with an eye on the top six meet on Teesside.

Boro registered their first win under new boss Chris Wilder last time out with a 2-1 success at Huddersfield.

Swansea made a slow start under new boss Russell Martin but have picked up of late, even if they did lose 3-2 at home to Reading last week.

The Swans can boast a decent recent record against Boro with four wins from the last five meetings between the pair.

  11. Royals hope to end Hull hoodoopublished at 14:45 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2021

Reading v Hull City (15:00 GMT)

Reading v HullImage source, Rex Features

Reading fans could be forgiven for going into today's match against Hull City with some trepidation.

The Tigers have won 11 of their past 12 meetings between the two sides and go into today's game on the back of a run of four successive league wins.

The Royals did pick up a morale-boosting 3-2 win at Swansea last time out and will hope they can now go on a similar winning run to climb away from the relegation danger they were plunged into by a six-point deduction for breaching financial rules.

Former England striker Andy Carroll got off the mark for them against the Swans and another today would give him goals in consecutive matches for the first time since January 2017.

  12. Struggling Tykes in need of derby successpublished at 14:42 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2021

    Barnsley v Huddersfield (15:00 GMT)

It's been a tough old season for Barnsley so far.

The Tykes finished fifth under Valerien Ismael last season but have won just two of their 20 league games this campaign.

Markus Schopp's short and disastrous reign was brought to an end last month and replacement Poya Asbaghi is now tasked with masterminding an unlikely survival bid.

Barnsley start the weekend eight points adrift of safety and a win today feels almost essential.

They host Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield, who made a very good start to the season but have lost their past two to drop away from the top six places.

  13. Lancashire derby at Ewood Parkpublished at 14:38 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2021

    Blackburn v Preston (15:00 GMT)

    Ewood ParkImage source, Rex Features

It's only just over four weeks since Blackburn suffered a humbling 7-0 home defeat by Fulham.

The kind of defeat that can easily derail an entire season and send a club on a downward spiral.

Not this time though, Tony Mowbray's men have responded to that shellacking by picking up 10 points in their past four games to move up to fifth in the table.

Rovers were relegated from the Premier League in 2012 and have never finished in the Championship play-offs since, could this be their year?

Looking to knock the Ewood Park side back down a peg or two today are Lancashire rivals Preston.

The Lilywhites have been consistently inconsistent this season but ended Bournemouth's unbeaten start to the season and drew with Fulham last week

Conditions are pretty horrendous at Ewood Park, just to add to the drama.

Bristol City v Derby (15:00 GMT)

    Wayne RooneyImage source, Rex Features

I’m expecting a tight and hard fought battle at Ashton Gate today. The Rams are, of course, bottom of the Championship but without their points deductions they would only be a point and a place behind Bristol City, so they're a far better team than the league suggests.

Nigel Pearson’s City side are 18th in the table and this match will be a real examination of the team and whether a relegation battle is a very real prospect.

The Robins have a pretty dismal home record. They'd won none of 17 previous home games, before winning two out of the last three.

I expect Derby to come out fighting though. Looking at their last three performances - they’re definitely showing they have quality and a fighting spirit.

Monday’s last-minute defeat at home to QPR would have been tough to take. Before that, they’d managed to hold high-flying Fulham and beaten another title contender in Bournemouth.

There could be fireworks at the Gate!

Han Noah MassengoImage source, Rex Features

It has been another trying week for Derby County and their fans.

The Rams took a 1-0 lead in their home match against QPR on Monday as they target the most unlikely of survival bids but fell to a late 2-1 defeat.

Wayne Rooney's men have been deducted a total of 21 points and go into the weekend's fixtures 19 points adrift.

Worse than that, reports in the national media suggested the club could be in danger of being liquidated, something Rooney denied was a possibility.

They travel to a Bristol City side who are seven points above the relegation zone.

    Coventry 1-2 West Brom

West Brom end their four-match winless run and go back up to third with a battling victory.

The Baggies led 2-0 at the break thanks to goals from Karlan Grant and Kyle McFadzean's own goal after Cedris Kipre's handball wasn't spotted by the officials.

McFadzean pulled one back late on for the home side but they could not find an equaliser.

A good contest on an emotional day in Coventry as the packed out stands remembered legendary boss John Sillett, who died this week at the age of 85.
