Crystal Palace v Liverpool (14:00 GMT)

Much has been made of Patrick Vieira's Crystal Palace and how they have played with a greater fluency than was achieved during the Roy Hodgson era.

Palace won 29 points from their opening 22 games under Hodgson last season.

This is their 22nd game today and even if they win they will only reach 27 points.

The way Arsenal are moving forward with lots of young players, you see these senior guys, and they're not helping.

A player like Granit Xhaka used to be captain. But I think for Arsenal, it's not all bad.

Everton are a bigger club and there is a lot of potential, but Graham Potter's job is secure at Brighton. He's worked well with the people there and he's built that squad.

He's been there a long time and I think we are only starting to see the benefit from it now and there is more to come.

I look at Everton and there is no structure, no hierarchy - and how long do you last there?

For me I would stay and continue his progress and in the coming months and years bigger clubs will come knocking.

Mikel Arteta wanted to use his side’s performance against Liverpool to get them motivated for Burnley.

Their five-game winning streak in December feels a long time ago after dispiriting cup defeats by the Reds and Nottingham Forest.

"I will show them what we've done against Liverpool and the manner of the result," he said.

"We've done a lot of good things. It was not enough to win the tie over two games against them, but this is the level that I will have to look for.

"We have to win on Sunday and look from there, because then we have a window and hopefully we can get some players back."

Graham Potter, he's done a really good job.

Wherever he goes next it has to be a long-term project. But ultimately, if he does stay where he is, they have some investment and score some goals, then even bigger clubs will come in for him.

Brendan Rodgers remains upbeat following Leicester's injury-time defeat by Spurs and insists his players will "get up and fight again" against Brighton.

When asked if the confidence of the players and mood in the camp has changed, the Foxes boss said: "It was just a 12-second period that changed the narrative of the game.

"Whenever you lose anything that's yours, that you've protected and fought for so hard, you are bound to be upset.

"But it's football - there's lots of adversity in it and the players know that you have to get up and fight again.

He added: "There were still lots of really good moments for us and there's still so much improvement left in this group. That will come."

Rodgers praised the resilience and attitude of the players, saying it is "the one thing that allows me to love working here every day".

"The spirit is very strong," he added. "They're an incredibly honest bunch of players that love their job."

  13. 'Football loves a scapegoat'published at 13:37 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2022

    Burnley

Natalie Bromley, from the No Nay Never podcast:

Burnley have been causing all sorts of outrage this week for asking the Premier League to postpone two home games following a Covid-19 outbreak at the club.

Football loves a scapegoat, but Burnley shouldn't carry the can for the postponement problem, nor should we be made to play when others have been able to postpone.

Actually, no club should. The Premier League set a precedent as to how Covid-19 outbreaks would be dealt with, and once that precedent was established, all 20 teams MUST be allowed to benefit from it.

Infections have been staggered. Everton had to postpone their games around Christmas, but it would be some three weeks later before the pandemic hit the Clarets.

We can’t just change the rules because we now realise that the decision we made wasn’t the right one, or that we don't like the consequences.

All teams must be allowed an equal playing field in order to protect the integrity of the competition.

In the meantime, I look forward to the feast that will be seven games in seven days coming to Turf Moor any time soon.

    Chelsea v Tottenham (16:30 GMT)

    TuchelImage source, Getty Images

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel says his side’s two wins over Spurs already this month do not give them the edge against Antonio Conte’s team today.

Spurs are unbeaten in the league in nine matches under Conte and visit Stamford Bridge eight points behind their hosts but with four games in hand.

“It’s a big game because we can all do the mathematics,” Tuchel said. “It’s strange to look at the table and see teams competing for the same area when one side has four games left to play.

“It can make you think you’re comfortably ahead when you’re not, but we want to stay in this position.

“The best way to do this is to beat the teams directly.”

He also rejected suggestions that Spurs feel inferior to Chelsea.

“Don’t get confused and think that because they lost twice they won’t have ambition,” he said. “Antonio will prepare his team to win and beat us. They know what we do and we know what they do.

“It’s not about having an advantage or being philosophical – it’s about delivering.”

    Leicester v Brighton (14:00 GMT)

Brighton assistant Billy Reid was due to take charge of the side today after Graham Potter tested positive for Covid, but Reid has now tested positive as well and needs to isolate.

That means first-team coach Bjorn Hamberg will be in the dugout for the game.

Hamberg told Sky Sports: "Billy has picked up Covid as well so he and Graham are both isolating at home.

"Graham has access to the footage and is well prepared. He will be involved in the game. Obviously it will be different but he feels well enough to be involved which is good for everyone."

  17. Klopp speaks highly of Eaglespublished at 13:27 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2022

Crystal Palace v Liverpool (14:00 GMT)

    Chris Coughlin
    BBC Radio Merseyside

Liverpool are off to the capital for the second time in four days as they travel to face a rejuvenated Crystal Palace side who've been a breath of fresh air under Patrick Vieira this season.

Jurgen Klopp spoke highly of the Eagles in his pre-match news conference, adding that the team have been "unlucky" at times this season, with five wins from 21 games perhaps not reflecting the progress that's been made at Selhurst Park.

The Reds, however, have coped very well without their star men Mo Salah and Sadio Mane this month, clocking up three wins from four games since they left for Afcon. And they've scored nine goals and conceded only one.

In the absence of Liverpool's international representatives, Diogo Jota stepped up to the plate once again during Thursday's win at Arsenal, and the goalscoring responsibility will likely fall on his shoulders again this weekend.

Whenever this fixture comes about, the infamous 3-3 draw in 2014 will of course be referenced - but Liverpool's record at the home of the Eagles has been good since then, winning seven of their past eight, including a 7-0 rout last term.

While a similar scoreline is unlikely on Sunday, Klopp and co will be confident of the same result.

  18. Dyche welcomes numbers backpublished at 13:24 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2022

    Arsenal v Burnley (14:00 GMT)

    Burnley

Sean Dyche confirmed that a number of players are on course to return for the Clarets' trip to Arsenal.

Burnley had games against Watford and Leicester postponed because of a lack of available players, but that now seems to be coming to an end.

"We have a few [out] but we are looking a bit healthier. [Ashley Barnes] is still getting over his injury, he is not ready yet," said Dyche.

"Charlie Taylor is touch and go. Erik Pieters is back after Covid today, as is Johann Berg Gudmundsson.

"Dwight [McNeil] has been back with the group. Dale [Stephens] has been back with the group.

"It has been a long list but we have different people returning. Maxwel [Cornet] is still away until at least Wednesday. We had 16 out there today - we should be fine."

  20. 'We have to be realistic'published at 13:20 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2022

    Chelsea v Tottenham (16:30 GMT)

    ConteImage source, Getty Images

Antonio Conte said Tottenham have to be realistic and not get carried away by their games in hand.

Heading into the match against Chelsea, Spurs are sixth in the Premier League, eight points behind Thomas Tuchel's side having played four games fewer.

When asked if finishing in the top three is his aim this season, Conte laughed and said: "You have to be very calm and go game by game.

"Don’t forget that we won against Watford in the last minute and we won against Leicester the last minute.

"I have to be realistic and, for sure, I am happy and it’s a pleasure to see my team fight until the end, but if you look at our points, maybe you don't ask me this question today.

"It's important to be realistic and to understand that it will be very difficult for us this season. But we want to fight and create a good foundation.

"I don’t change my idea for some positive results. I have to go over and look at the situation and try to improve it. We need to improve a lot.

"This season, my ambition is to try to help the club. For sure, we give 100% to get the best out of our players and to do our best in a difficult league."
