We wanted Scotland and Wales to both qualify, but that will now not be possible. But hopefully we at least get a winner-takes-all clash between the two in Cardiff at the end of March.

First, Scotland must get past Ukraine and Wales have to take care of Austria.

Likewise, Italy and Portugal can no longer both make it, with at least one set to fall. Will they meet in Lisbon in the play-off final, or can North Macedonia or Turkey spring a shock?

Scotland boss Steve Clarke added: "Every game is almost a must win even when you play the so-called minnows. We managed to do that well.

"We have shown over the course of the play-offs for Euro 2020 that we can handle the tension for semi-final and final games, and hopefully we can prove that again in March.

"I'm sure all the players who are hopeful they'll be picked come March will be raring to go come the games.

"The excitement will build gradually over the next four months. But for now the players have to concentrate on their form."

Scotland manager Steve Clarke gives his reaction to the draw: "Ukraine is up there with the toughest [draw] and then from that we know Wales have done really well recently. We know the Austrians well.

"It's something for everyone to focus on and think about over the winter months and look forward to some good games in March, hopefully."

Scotland will host Ukraine in the play-off semi-final for the 2022 World Cup, while Wales have been drawn at home to Austria.

If Scotland and Wales win their matches, they will face each other in Cardiff in a final for a spot in Qatar.

Wales are bidding to reach their first World Cup in 64 years, while Scotland have waited 24 years to play in one.

Other semi-finals include Italy v North Macedonia and Portugal at home to Turkey.

That draw means either European champions Italy or Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal will not be at the World Cup, with the winners of their semis meeting in a final.

The semi-finals and finals, both played over one leg, will take place over the course of five days from 24-29 March.

As we've already heard - and will hear a few more times between now and the play-offs in March - it's 63 years since Wales last played at a World Cup.

It was via the play-offs they qualified on that occasion too.

Wales beat Israel 2-0 in both legs, with former Tottenham winger and Welsh cake Twitter celebrity Cliff Jones among the goal scorers.

In the last 25 years Scotland have had a few cracks at play-offs to reach major finals.

In 1999, a year after their last appearance at a World Cup, they were paired with England in a two-legged tie.

Paul Scholes double at Hampden gave Scotland a mountain to climb in the return at Wembley, yet climb it they nearly did. Don Hutchison's header gave Scotland the lead and England goalkeeper David Seaman had to deny Christian Daily late on to avoid extra-time.

In 2003 they faced the Netherlands in a play-off. James McFadden scored as Scotland won the first leg 1-0, but under German boss Berti Vogts they fell apart in Amsterdam, losing 6-0 on the night.

Home advantage is more important than ever, with these play-off semi-finals and finals played over one leg.

After last week's 1-1 draw in Cardiff, Belgium manager Roberto Martinez praised the "fantastic atmosphere" generated by Wales' fans.

"It's fair to say when Wales are at home, they've got an extra threat," said the former Swansea City boss.

"It makes a big difference for Wales now to go into the play-offs and be able to play at home."

Wales manager Robert Page agreed, adding: "When they were singing the anthem at the end, their support for us, I've been there as a player myself and it absolutely helps.

"We look forward to the home tie now. They [the fans] were fantastic and certainly helped us achieve that."

He's already navigated Scotland through a play-off into a tournament, having beaten Israel on penalties in the Nations League semi-final last year before another shoot-out win over Serbia secured qualification for Euro 2020.

Wales and Scotland faced each other in 1977 for a place at the World Cup.

The Welsh decided to hold the game at Anfield to increase the crowd, and a full house is exactly what they got - but unfortunately for the Welsh, the Tartan Army had travelled down in force.

Don Masson coolly slotted home a questionable penalty past Dai Davies, and with Kenny Dalglish adding a second goal ten minutes later, the Wales dream was over.

What did you make of the draw? Scotland and Wales can not both make it having been drawn in the same path, however it does open up the possibility of a huge final in Cardiff between the pair.

If that does happen - should Wales stick with their favoured home of Cardiff City's 33,000 capacity stadium, or open it up to the huge Principality Stadium? They surely will not have a problem selling all 74,500 tickets, especially if Scotland and their big away support are coming to town.

Italy manager Roberto Mancini gives his reaction to the draw, with the Azzurri potentially having to get past Portugal or Turkey away from home to reach the World Cup.

He says: "It's a very difficult draw for us. North Macedonia is a very good team, and if we win we have to play away."

Wales have potentially two home ties to reach the World Cup.
