    Squad Goals

This is arguably Albion’s most important game of the season.

They’ve struggled on the road, winning only one of the past eight and scoring a measly three goals in the process.

West Brom are fourth and just a point and a place behind them sit QPR. The Rs have a game in hand too, so they could leapfrog their opponents today and could then put a little bit of distance between them too, if they can get the win.

To add some spice, Middlesbrough could creep into the top six today and go ahead of West Brom with a big win against Reading. Chris Wilder, a man who many thought would take over at The Hawthorns in the summer, could rub salt in the wounds of The Albion.

Ex-West Brom striker Charlie Austin will be licking his lips facing his former side. He hasn’t scored in two games - Austin and one-nil win anyone?

  4. League Two previewpublished at 14:53 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2022

After Newport's earlier victory over Harrogate, there are 10 more fixtures on the way in League Two.

Runaway leaders Forest Green are on their travels at Northampton Town, who have their own automatic promotion aspirations in third.

Second-placed Tranmere take on Rochdale while newcomers Sutton United will continue to keep their fairytale start to life in the EFL when they head to Stevenage.

Finally, two sides in the play-off pack face each other as Port Vale host Swindon Town. Both took a break from league action last weekend as they faced Premier League opposition in the FA Cup, but sadly neither could manufacture a giantkilling against Brentford and Man City respectively.

Just a place and two points separates those two before kick-off.

  5. League One previewpublished at 14:51 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2022

After a few weeks of fixture disruption and FA Cup interludes, it's back to a full programme of 12 fixtures in League One this afternoon.

Leaders Rotherham head to Fleetwood as they try and keep themselves clear of closest chasers Sunderland who are also on the road at Accrington.

Wycombe are just a point behind those two and welcome near neighbours Oxford United to Adams Park for an M40 derby.

Wigan meanwhile may be a few points further behind in fourth, but have as many as five games in hand on some of their rivals. Leam Richardson's side head to bottom-of-the-table Doncaster.

And at Fratton Park, two play-off contenders go head-to-head as Portsmouth in eighth take on fifth-placed MK Dons.

  6. Lowe got Preston looking highpublished at 14:49 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2022

Preston v Birmingham City (15:00 GMT)

    Ryan LoweImage source, PA Media

Fourtheenth v 18th might not sound like much of a mouth-watering contest on paper, but for Preston fans, a visit from Birmingham City today means another chance to try and haul in the gap to the top six.

Back-to-back wins either side of the festive season for Ryan Lowe's side have helped keep them in touch, but momentum has also been stalled by Covid-19 postponements in between.

Birmingham City meanwhile are in danger of seeing their season drift unless they can find some impetus.

No win in four for Lee Bowyer's side who still need to keep themselves at arms-length from the drop zone below.

  7. Under-pressure Paunovic still in postpublished at 14:47 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2022

    Middlesbrough v Reading (15:00 GMT)

    Veljko PaunovicImage source, PA Media

A week to forget for Reading and their under-fire manager Veljko Paunovic last week after the Royals found themselves FA Cup giantkilling victims at the hands of sixth-tier Kidderminster Harriers on Saturday before Championship hot-shots Fulham put seven past them at home on Tuesday night.

That hammering left Reading still only three points clear of the relegation zone having played a game more than Peterborough and with only one win in their past seven league matches.

But despite a downturn in results, Serbian Paunovic remains in charge and takes his somewhat depleted squad to Middlesbrough this afternoon looking to turn the fortunes of the club around.

  8. Hoops' dreams of play-offs face stiff testpublished at 14:45 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2022

QPR v West Brom (15:00 GMT)

    Stefan JohansenImage source, PA Media

A very tasty-looking encounter in west London this afternoon as fifth hosts fourth.

QPR have been among the surprise packages this season so far having ensconsed themselves in the play-off picture for a few months.

But the visit of West Brom to the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium should tell us a lot about where exactly Mark Warburton's side are placed in a tricky period where they find themselves without a number of key players through injury and international commitments.

The Baggies have dropped off the pace with the top three of late with no win in their past three games.

But if they can come through today with a positive result, Valerien Ismael has back-to-back home matches on the horizon next week to try and reignite their automatic promotion bid.

  9. Rams return focus to on-pitch duties after hectic weekpublished at 14:43 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2022

Derby County v Sheffield United (15:00 GMT)

    Derby badgeImage source, PA Media

Never a moment out of the spotlight it seems for Derby County and not always for the right reasons sadly.

Wayne Rooney's side have been among the form horses of late in the division with three wins and a draw in their past four matches to close the seemingly yawning gap between them and safety.

But uncertainty rumbles on over the future ownership of the club as administration continues and a preferred bidder remains at large.

Rooney has been unable to bring in the new faces he craves or even have permission to hold on to the likes of Phil Jagielka, who now looks bound for Stoke City.

Sheffield United meanwhile will be without their boss Paul Heckingbottom this afternoon who tested positive for Covid-19 this week.

Four wins on the bounce have pushed the Blades back into contention for a play-off push, seven points is the current gap but they also have plenty of games in hand on other contenders.

  10. We meet again!published at 14:40 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2022

Fulham v Bristol City (15:00 GMT)

    Andreas WeimannImage source, PA Media

Seven days after they took each other to extra time in the FA Cup third round, Fulham and Bristol City renew acquaintances, but this time in the Championship and at Craven Cottage.

While a couple of shuffled starting line-ups made for a tight tussle at Ashton Gate last weekend, expect Fulham to once again go fully loaded into this one and full of confidence after they dispatched Reading 7-0 on Tuesday to record their second away win of the campaign by that scoreline.

Marco Silva's men moved back into second after that and dramatically improved their goal difference in the process.

Bristol City meanwhile will be looking to build on their come-from-behind win against Millwall on 2 January. Hat-trick hero Andreas Weimann will be hoping he can add some more goals to his delightful dozen in 25 league appearances so far this term.

  14. FULL-TIMEpublished at 14:30 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2022

    Luton 3-2 Bournemouth

A thriller at Kenilworth Road sees Luton's added-time winner beat Championship leaders Bournemouth.

Nathan Jones' side went in front through an unfortunate Lloyd Kelly own goal, before Allan Campbell made it two with a thunderous long-range strike.

Cameron Jerome's goal being disallowed after a close-looking offside call looked to have kept the Cherries in the game as Emiliano Marcondes' header and Morgan Rogers' strike with his first touch put them level.

But Kal Naismith had the final say which means that Fulham only need a point this afternoon to take over from Scott Parker's side at the top of the table.

GOAL: Luton 3-2 Bournemouthpublished at 14:28 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2022

    Kal Naismith (90+7 mins)

    What drama!

Kal Naismith wins it at the death for Luton.

The ball finds its way to the edge of the area where Naismith is standing and he calmly places his shot past Mark Travers.

Wild celebrations from the home bench.

    Cardiff 0-1 Blackburn

Blackburn hold on, just. It's all over at the Cardiff City Stadium and Joe Rothwell's first half strike gives Rovers three points against Cardiff.

Ryan Nyambe saw red for the visitors late on but Cardiff couldn't make their advantage count.

That restores their place in second in the Championship table. Meanwhile, the Bluebirds remain 20th and four points off the drop zone.
