Blackburn Rovers show their promotion credentials tonight with a stoic performance, one which was as much about grit and determination as it was about glory.

Sam Gallagher shouldered the responsibility of covering for the internationally-tied-up Ben Brereton Diaz and did so beautifully with a fine winner.

Boro were impressive at times but failed to get a goal to earn themselves anything from the game.

Our thoughts and best wishes go to the fan who was taken ill, we all hope you make a full recovery.

Football from the EFL is back again tomorrow. So rest up, and join us then.

    Good night.

Blackburn move into the automatic places with this win, which returns them to winning ways after a surprise loss to Hull last time out.

Boro are still only two points behind Huddersfield in sixth, with a game in hand to boot.

A little bit of brilliance and patience from Sam Gallagher has settled this.

The ball came across Gallagher's body, his back to goal and then all of a sudden he swivels and the ball flies in.

Boro are probably disheartened, and will say they had most of the possession, but they didn't score.

Middlesbrough boss Chris Wilder will rue a few things tonight.

Firstly there was the slow start which allowed Blackburn to impose themselves on the game in the opening 45 minutes.

Then when they wrestled control, they could not find the finish they needed, with Matt Crooks, Folarin Balogun and Aaron Connolly all passing up chances.

Sam Gallagher's goal came from a Boro miskick which failed to clear and despite going for it in the late stages, they were unable to pin Blackburn back.

Before the game Wilder said a defeat does not derail a season, and he's right. But this was a golden opportunity to strike a psychological blow to the rest of the Championship against one of the division's in-form sides.

When your top scorer is away, someone needs to step up and for the victorious Blackburn Rovers tonight, it was Sam Gallagher who does just that.

Gallagher scored a second-half winner to see off fellow promotion chasers Middlesbrough, and they now climb to second in the table.

They certainly had to dig in, especially late on, but Ewood Park was rocking at full-time. Fans starting to believe.

Rovers boss Tony Mowbray - a huge symbol of Boro from his time there - has beaten his old club and his side showed real character and belief to come out on top.

    Blackburn 1-0 Middlesbrough

Almost a debut to savour for Dayovaisio Zeefuik as he races down the right and smashes a shot at goal which deflects behind for a Blackburn corner.

The hosts try keep-ball but Boro block it...

    Time is ticking!

  7. OVER THE BARpublished at 90+12 mins

    Blackburn 1-0 Middlesbrough

Matt Crooks meets Marcus Tavernier's cross right in front of goal and powers it over the top.

    That was the chance.

  8. YELLOW CARDpublished at 90+12 mins

    Blackburn 1-0 Middlesbrough

Isaiah Jones hasn't given up on this one yet. He chases a long diagonal by Dael Fry to the byeline and keeps it in, gets into a tussle with Tayo Edun.

Edun fouls. Booked. It's the 10th one I think tonight.

    That’s a big chance.

Sometimes you need to have a little bit of luck.

Aaron Connolly went to try and smash it as hard as he could but he lost his body shape and it goes high and wide.

  10. YELLOW CARDpublished at 90+10 mins

    Blackburn 1-0 Middlesbrough

Isaiah Jones gets a booking for Middlesbrough as he and Tayo Edun thunder into a classic 50-50 in midfield and both players are feeling the effects of it.

It was a proper tussle that.

  11. Postpublished at 90+8 mins

    Blackburn 1-0 Middlesbrough

Matt Crooks gets into the box on the back of a Aaron Connolly flick-on for Boro, but his touch off to the Republic of Ireland man sees a shot whizz over and wide.

Boro are racking up chances but cannot take one yet. Still four to go.

  12. Postpublished at 90+7 mins

    Blackburn 1-0 Middlesbrough

Pace starting to tell perhaps, as Duncan Watmore tempts a tired challenge from Scott Wharton and earns Boro a free-kick.

Credit to Rovers though, they are well drilled at the back and Bradley Johnson of all players is the man to head away.

They're being made to work to earn this.

  13. Postpublished at 90+5 mins

    Blackburn 1-0 Middlesbrough

Boro have got so much striking talent on and are getting the ball forward far more directly than before.

Andraz Sporar shows glue-like control to bring the ball down on the right but his cross is cleared.

Then Marcus Tavernier crosses but again, the blue and white-halved shirts get there, doing just enough to quell a spirited Boro.

  14. Postpublished at 90+3 mins

    Blackburn 1-0 Middlesbrough

Big build up for the set-piece which was right on the cusp of the box.

Paddy McNair steps up after Folarin Balogun rolled the ball square and thashed it over the top.

Blackburn breathe a sigh of relief.

They strike on the break. Dayovaisio Zeefuik gets a welcome to English football, Paddy McNair gets a booking for crumpling the Dutchman with a hefty challenge in midfield.

  15. YELLOW CARDpublished at 90 mins

    Blackburn 1-0 Middlesbrough

Scott Wharton clips Andraz Sporar on the edge of the box as the Boro striker looked to get a shot away and is booked.

    Real danger here.

There are 12 minutes of added time after the medical emergency.

  16. Postpublished at 88 mins

    Blackburn 1-0 Middlesbrough

Sam Gallagher wants a second and gives Blackburn a welcome respite from defending with a spirited surge toward goal.

His shot is blocked, and the ricochet finds Daniel Butterworth offside.

    Subs on both side.

Dayovaisio Zeefuik on for Blackburn, Duncan Watmore is on for Boro.

  17. Postpublished at 87 mins

    Blackburn 1-0 Middlesbrough

Folarin Balogun is having some joy down the left for Middlesbrough, combines with Andraz Sporar but cannot get the shot away, and Blackburn clear.

Then a raking ball down the middle almost sees a tumbling Sporar turn a shot in but the ball deflects behind.

The corner is cleared near post but Boro recycle and only the boot of John Buckley hoists a clearance away.

Under the pump now as Boro pour forward.

  18. Postpublished at 85 mins

    Blackburn 1-0 Middlesbrough

Blackburn try to tip the balance as Daniel Butterworth and John Buckley exchange passes through the middle, but Matt Crooks tracks back to break it up.

Anfernee Dijksteel pumps in a ball which zips away.

Folarin Balogun then runs into the box, Darragh Lenihan goes shoulder to shoulder with the striker, who then tumbles. No penalty. Corner.

Lenihan roars his disapproval at the penalty appeal, and Balogun fights his corner. It's testy.

Set piece cleared first-man by the way.

  19. Postpublished at 82 mins

    Blackburn 1-0 Middlesbrough

Boro sub Folarin Balogun has to get up to speed with the game, but he also needs some kinder passes than the one dished up to him by Andraz Sporar a moment ago.

Had him in two minds, and Boro lost possession.

All in all, a bright response from the visitors though having gone behind. Blackburn on rearguard action presently.

  20. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 80 mins

    Blackburn 1-0 Middlesbrough

As well as a heap of added time, we know that Middlesbrough are a side who make a habit of late goals.

Blackpool, Mansfield and Reading have all recently seen goals scored against them by Boro in added time.

Chris Wilder has made a change too. Folarin Balogun is on for Jonny Howson.
