Incredibly this is the second consecutive World Cup Italy have missed out on, having failed to qualify for Russia in 2018.
So by the time 2026 rolls around, it will have been 12 years between Italy appearances at the World Cup.
And perhaps the most remarkable stat about Italy and world football's greatest competition... the last time the Azzurri won a knockout game at a World Cup was in 2006, when they beat France in the final.
That 16-year wait is set to become at least 20.
