    And game on in Cardiff!

Marcel Sabitzer's long-range low drive is deflected up and over a sprawling Wayne Hennessey and Austria are back in it.

Just over 20 minutes for Wales to hang on. You can follow that one here.

    Well!

All of a sudden Turkey come alive with a delightful move that opens up the Portugal defence and Burak Yilmaz slides into the bottom corner with a smart, side-footed effort.

    Game on.

    Italy 0-0 North Macedonia

For the first time in the game, the whistles set in from the home support.

It's because North Macedonia manage to keep the ball for a short while.

The longer the game remains goalless, the more frustrated the crowd will become.

They are getting in behind though, the hosts. You have to think if there's going to be another goal in this game it will go Portugal's way.

    Portugal 2-0 Turkey

Cristiano Ronaldo wants in on the action himself and shows a bit of frustration after giving the ball away. This one has gone a bit quiet in the last few minutes, which Portugal won't mind.

    How did he miss that?

Domenico Berardi has done everything but score. He spins the defender on the edge of the box but blazes his shot over the bar.

That was the chance. It remains goalless.

Diogo Jota is slipping as he meets a cross from Bernardo Silva on the right and can only thump his volley into the ground and then over the crossbar on the bounce.

    Portugal 2-0 Turkey

Cristiano Ronaldo has been lurking this evening without his team-mates quite finding him, but the threat is there.

Diogo Jota is also a threat and takes a long ball from Diogo Costa down, spots Turkey goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir miles off his line but lofts his attempt over.

    Sweden 0-0 Czech Republic

Fifty-five minutes, one shot on target.

    Nervy but not a classic.

    Italy 0-0 North Macedonia

Domenico Berardi has been one of the brightest sparks for Italy and he manages to fire a shot on target.

But it's straight at Stole Dimitrievski and a comfortable save.

A minute later and it's almost deja vu as Berardi cuts in on that left foot again, but this time he misses the target altogether.

  11. Wales double leadpublished at 20:57 Greenwich Mean Time 24 March 2022

    Wales 2-0 Austria

Wales have one foot in the World Cup play-off final.

And guess who scored their goal? Gareth Bale, of course.

The Real Madrid forward produces another sublime finish after Austria fail to clear a corner. It's a brilliant strike into the top corner as the ball rolls loose.

Wales have become near invincible at home so it would take a remarkable turnaround now to stop them setting up a final against Scotland or Ukraine.

    Ping.

Italy switch the ball from left to right as they try to stretch their opponents, but the red wall stands firm.

As Domenico Berardi spins his man with ease, the next red shirt dives in to win the ball.

What a tackle that is to bail Turkey out from Ozan Kabak, after the visitors found themselves in a right mess. Diogo Jota pinched the ball back and was about to shoot inside the box, but Kabak gets round and takes the ball off his toes.

More Italian pressure and more stout Macedonian defending.

Turkey need a fast start to this second half but they're not being allowed any time on the ball so far and it is Bernardo Silva who musters the first effort on goal.
