  1. Post update

    Gareth Southgate

England's winless start to their Nations League campaign continued as an experimental Three Lions side failed to break down European champions Italy in a goalless draw at Molineux.

Have a read of Alex Bysouth's report from Molineux

We are back on Tuesday for more Nations League action in this never ending season.

    Until then.

  2. 'A tough test tonight'

    FT: England 0-0 Italy

    England

England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "The first game against San Marino got my nerves out of the way and allowed me to play and relax tonight. These are a good Italian team even though they're young so it was another tough test tonight."

On his first-half save: "Us goalkeepers we work every day on those situations - being able to react and see where players are coming in from and see them coming in at the back post - I just managed to get over and make myself big. That was a nice save for me to make.

"I'm bringing a lot of confidence into my game - I've been playing well for Arsenal, playing positively. I know there's going to be dips, I was a bit disappointed in the second half I was a bit sloppy on the ball but learning how to play in this England team there'll be times like that. Off the back of my Arsenal season I have just come into this camp and hit it head on and I try to push Jordan [Pickford] and Nick [Pope] as much as I can."

  3. England 'one of the candidates to win the World Cup'

    FT: England 0-0 Italy

    Italy

Italy manager Roberto Mancini on England: "They are one of the best teams in Europe at this moment. They have many very good players. They are maybe trying some different things before the World Cup. They are one of the candidates to win the World Cup in Qatar."

  4. 'Still areas to improve if we want to lift the World Cup'

    FT: England 0-0 Italy

    England

More from England defender Harry Maguire, on manager Gareth Southgate: "His record over the last four years speaks for itself - when you play at the highest level there's pressure and scrutiny and criticism and every game that you don't win there will always be criticism.

"The last few games we haven't scored enough goals but we got to a World Cup semi-final playing this way and we were a penalty shoot out away from winning a Euros in our home country which would've been one of the greatest moments this country has ever seen.

"Let the football do the talking - everyone get behind us for the World Cup and keep pushing us, we're doing our best to improve. We've shown there's still areas to improve and if we want to lift the World Cup we have to strive to improve and every day that we're together we have to aim for that because we want to set high standards and the next one is to lift the trophy."

  5. 'Another big game on Tuesday'

    FT: England 0-0 Italy

    England

England defender Harry Maguire speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "Disappointment in the end - we came into the game wanting three point and to move up the group. First half was a pretty even game with chances for both teams and the second half we really pushed and dominated the game and I thought there was only going to be one winner really. We created enough chances, good chances as well, to win the match so frustrating in the end but there's positives to take from it. Italy are a top team, a well organised team and I think it shows over these last three matches that at the international level games are decided on big moments and you've got to take the big moments when they come and over the last three games we haven't done that and we've got another big game on Tuesday now.

"We had so many balls flash across the box and crosses, we created chances and on another day I think we score two or three goals comfortably. I think we gave them a bit too much in terms of chances for them, we spoke about that at half-time and the second half was better and a clean sheet. These games are at a top level, you don't get given these games you have to earn them. When the moments come whether it's in our penalty box to defend you defend and when it's in their penalty box you have to score - they're the big moments in games that decide matches and it's going to be the same in Qatar."

On Fikayo Tomori: "He was brilliant - he's a magnificent season. A great move for him to go out there and play at a top club and win the league, he's been brilliant. I haven't seen too many of his games but I hear a lot about him and it's great to have competition at this level. I want my country to win every time they play so the more talent we have coming through the happier I am and that gives us the biggest opportunity to win the World Cup and that's our aim."

  6. Snorefest

    FT: England 0-0 Italy

England have failed to score in seven of their 15 Nations League games (47%), while Italy have failed to score in four of their last seven games in all competitions.

  7. 'This has been a difficult series of matches'

    FT: England 0-0 Italy

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate tells Channel 4: "There were things we did really well in Germany and things we needed to improve on, we did improve like beating their midfield press, we had two or three really good chances which we need to score, we lacked the sharpness in the final third. In the second half we were much the better team. When you are pushing and there is no crowd behind you and that makes a difference."

Asked if it was a conservative performance: "We are trying to move the ball through a good, well organised team. We gave the ball into our forward players, we have given them all a go and tried to refresh it so that sharpness in the final third is not there. I was pleased with the general performance.

"We have been too reliant on Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling and other players have to step into that space. A number of them have been able to it with their clubs but have not converted at international level.

"Today Aaron Ramsdale did very well and make a couple of important saves, his composure with the ball is what we hoped. Fikayo Tomori did really well and pleased he has come through from the slight injury he had, that will give us more depth. James Ward-Prowse used the ball well, controlled the game and his passing was good. Tammy Abraham was fine and was not unhappy with his performance.

"This has been a difficult series of matches, two away game and you saw how difficult Hungary are to play against. Then in Munich then when we have the advantage we did not have the crowd. Physically and psychologically that makes a difference."

  8. 'I don't see that ruthless edge'

    FT: England 0-0 Italy

    Matt Upson

Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think a lot of it is mentality - it's a way of thinking and an approach. If you look at some of the chances missed tonight it is often about being more aggressive and more decisive when you play - the Raheem Sterling miss is a classic one.

It doesn't have to be pretty, it doesn't have to be elaborate - although all of that is nice and part of the game - but you want to see that edge, and I just don't see it at the moment. That ruthless edge that is going to go and win games and win tournaments and score goals - it's just not there.

Can it be rediscovered? Yes I think it can, and it's going to need to be if England want to go on and be successful at the next tournament.

  10. 'England could be more risky'

    FT: England 0-0 Italy

    Italy

Italy legend Alessandro Del Piero told Channel 4: "I think England played OK, not well or bad, In the second half it could have been more risky. But in terms of possession they were good, it is the final touch that determines whether you are a winning team. When you have that chance you have to score.

"Italy played well the first half. They defended very, very well in the second half but they need to do more on the attack side."

  11. 'It is a difficult one to take'

    FT: England 0-0 Italy

    England

England midfielder Mason Mount tells Channel 4: "It is frustrating, we want to win, create chances and score goals. I probably should have done better with my chances, we had a few other chances and it is something we have to look at. We are keeping clean sheets so it is something that is a positive but we have to work at it.

"We have had chances today and probably should have scored, sometimes you go through little periods where it is difficult. We have to keep working hard in training, look where we can improve. We have the players to to do that, the talent and quality, just work at it.

"I was in a 10 role so gave me freedom to roam and find spaces, linking the midfield to the attacking boys. I found myself in spaces to shoot but did not to do well enough from my shot but it was too easy for the keeper. It is a difficult one to take because I feel we could have come away with more.

"We want to win every game, even if it is a friendly. We have looked a the last two games, felt confident in what we do but it is a tough one."

  12. 'Time of year' is a factor

    FT: England 0-0 Italy

    Matt Upson

Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's another game without scoring - for any manager or team that's always a concern no matter what stage in the season or tournament. But this is no reason to start panicking, you have to analyse it and say what you see and it's not as positive or decisive in attack as what we've seen England in the past.

I don't want to keep harping on about it but you have to take a step back and look at the time of year, the state of the season and put it all into account and look at it all as a whole picture to make a bit more sense of it.

Handsome Nick: 3 games and we have scored one single goal from a penalty. Depressingly negative football. Rolling the ball around the defence with no urgency. Then Kane comes on and spends half his time dropping between the centre backs. The whole team playing without confidence.

Dean Woodward: No forward play, nothing really to get excited about. Not sure how anyone can think this management can put a good run into a proper competition. Negative southgate called into question again

  14. Elsewhere in Europe

    All over in Rotterdam.

A late Dutch siege comes to nowt as Poland hold on for a draw in a game that they led 2-0.

Meanwhile, Wales fought back to draw 1-1 with Belgium and Germany were held to a 1-1 draw in Hungary.

Turkey won 2-0 in Luxembourg, while Romania claimed a narrow 1-0 win over Finland.

  15. 'Mentality' not quite there

    FT: England 0-0 Italy

    Matt Upson

Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I feel a bit disappointed with our attacking style of play and the attacking mentality of going forwards with the ball and our first touch to be forwards and positive wasn't there.

I thought the first half was a bright, lively game, the passing was slick and quick. But the second half wasn't the same kind of tempo - in these games when it's there for the taking it's no surprise that we're not scoring a lot of goals in this Nations League. It's not quite there in terms of the mentality and the flow when we're going forwards.

Talking of drama...Brennan Johnson has the ball in the net for Wales but it's flagged offside. But wait, VAR check...

Goal stands. Wales have an equaliser against Belgium.

  19. Depay misses late penalty for Dutch

    Netherlands 2-2 Poland

A late handball shout goes against Poland's Matty Cash.

The Netherlands could make it three wins from three in the Nations League if Memphis Depay converts from the penalty spot.

Up he steps...he's missed. His effort slices wide off the right post.

  20. FULL-TIME

    England 0-0 Italy

All over, it ends in a dour, goalless draw.

England three without a win under Gareth Southgate and bottom of their Nations League group.

Not the ideal preparation in a World Cup year.
