  1. Post update

    England 0-0 Italy

    Matt Upson

Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I don't know if we're destined to see a goal in this game - that isn't an assertive enough stance that Raheem Sterling is taking. It's almost like he's waiting for the ball to come to him, whenever that happens you're always a bit tentative. He needed to step in and have a bit more authority to stamp that ball.

More often than not if you're a bit more positive and aggressive with your touch then it ends up in the back of the net - poor finish.

  2. WHAT A MISS!

    England 0-0 Italy

England should lead, the best chance of the game so far.

Full-back Reece James whips in a delightful cross to the back post where skipper Raheem Sterling awaits in bags of space, but the Manchester City forward cannot keep his effort down from a couple of yards out.

    A shocker.

  3. Post update

    England 0-0 Italy

    Matt Upson

Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

If we think about where England can progress and be more of a threat, the time both centre-backs have got on the ball would allow them to be a bit more creative with their passing and get England higher up the pitch and create opportunities for the attacking players.

I think Fikayo Tomori and Harry Maguire can do better with the ball, they don't have to keep playing it safe - sometimes just step in, you don't know what's going to happen.

  4. Post update

    England 0-0 Italy

Aaron Ramsdale is not number one but hasn't done his chances of getting on the plane to the Middle East any harm tonight.

The Arsenal goalkeeper reads Matteo Pessina's ball forward well, chesting it away from Lorenzo Pellegrini and coolly sending a pass up the field.

    Very good keeping that.

  5. Post update

    England 0-0 Italy

Not sure who Harry Maguire is looking for with a long raking pass, but the ballboy behind Gianluigi Donnarumma has a bit of work to do in retrieving the ball.

  6. YELLOW CARD

    England 0-0 Italy

Federico Gatti then booked for an infringement in the middle of the park.

  7. CLOSE!

    England 0-0 Italy

Italy threaten at the start of the second half when Lorenzo Pellegrini breaks free from midfield.

His pass towards Gianluca Scamacca is intercepted by Declan Rice and the Federico Gatti blazes over.

What will Gareth Southgate's message have been at half-time?

Italy get us under way again.

Edd: Controversial but I don't understand the Grealish hype. When did impact sub become a dirty word? He is the best in the world at running at tired legs. Playing him from the start just doesn't have the same effect.

  11. 'Italy played well'

    England 0-0 Italy

    Italy

Italy legend Alessandro del Piero talking to Channel 4: "I am happy, Italy played well and defended properly. They have counter attacked many times and we see real potential."

  12. Post update

    HT: England 0-0 Italy

    Matt Upson

Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Reece James has got forward well and been our main outlet on the right hand side, trying to overlap Raheem Sterling and make something happen. It's only half-time and I think the game is really there for anyone.

Let's not forget that England are bottom of this table - we can talk about the World Cup but England need to win this game. They need to do well in the Nations League and I do think it's theirs - the opportunity is here for us at the moment.

  13. Elsewhere in Europe

Poland still lead against the run of play against the Netherlands thanks to Matty Cash's superb 18th minute strike and Hungary and Germany are level at 1-1 in England's group at the break.

Wales midfielder Joe Allen was forced off with an injury in their game against Belgium, a game which is goalless at the end of the first period.

Elsewhere, Inter Milan midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu has put Turkey a 1-0 ahead in Luxembourg and Romania lead 1-0 against Finland.

Steve Pratt: Looking much better without Kane getting in the way in midfield. Good to see people in the box

GoonerThoughts: I’d be interested to see an attacking 343: Trent and James at RCB and RWB, against teams we expect to have lots of possession. Walker at RCB for more defensive. Saka LWB. Rice and Bellingham. Foden, Grealish and Kane.

  15. Post update

    HT: England 0-0 Italy

    Alex Bysouth

    BBC Sport at Molineux

Italy finished the half the stronger and looked more confident and decisive with the ball. England's build-up play is all a bit ponderous, no one willing to commit a defender - the Azzurri did begin to take a few more risks towards the end there and have had the openings to show for it.

  16. 'England have got goals in them'

    HT: England 0-0 Italy

    Matt Upson

Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

The players are used to playing with no people in the stadium but to have just a few is quite strange.

The game has been a lot more open than what you would normally see. You wouldn't see Italy being as open as what they are. I think there is opportunity for England to get down the outside and get players into the box. There's good movement off the ball and good delivery into the box - we've got goals in us.

    It's a good game.

  17. HALF-TIME

    England 0-0 Italy

And that's the last action of the first half.

    It remains goalless.

  18. CLOSE!

    England 0-0 Italy

England players Jack Grealish and Fikayo Tomori collide against each other and Italy pick up a loose ball on the edge of the box.

Manuel Locatelli then volleys a shot at goal which Aaron Ramsdale smothers low down.

  19. Post update

    England 0-0 Italy

    Matt Upson

Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Declan Rice just always fills those holes - he gets through so much work, he comes out of the midfield area to go and press the ball. He's so honest and so much energy all the time he just has to be aware that when he leaves those spaces someone has to fill in for him because his work rate is just so high.

  20. GREAT SAVE!

    England 0-0 Italy

Two minutes to half time and Aaron Ramsdale is called into action again, making a good reflex save to deny Matteo Pessina.

England were a little slow to close down the Italians on that occasion.
