Harry Kane is dropping deep and tries to release Luke Shaw away down the left but the England skipper puts too much on the pass and it dribbles out of play for a throw-in.

Harry Kane is clattered late by Nico Schlotterbeck, who produces a mistimed sliding challenge from behind, but Kane is able to get to his feet and is OK.

England manger Gareth Southgate, talking to Channel 4: "We've got some good options there [left-back]. Luke [Shaw] came into the game well the other night and it is a good opportunity for him tonight. He is a super player.

"We thought coming back into the side he [Eric Dier] did really well and we wanted to keep that momentum going. He hasn't been with us for a while. John [Stones] is fresh but Kyle [Walker] has been out for a while so we felt it made sense to freshen that up tonight.

"We wanted to move the bench around a bit tonight. We took a big group, which has been great on the training pitch."

Does Trent Alexander-Arnold being left out tell us about his chances of making World Cup squad: "No, we've got a big squad with us and we've got four right-backs with super quality. Kieran Trippier is playing exceptionally well and Reece James] has been one of the outstanding players in the league this season but we know that Trent is a very, very good footballer and that's why we've picked him in the squad."

The biggest problem is too many players for their respective clubs are out of form. We have to look at the likes of James Maddison and compare his form despite Leicester are not doing well.

In terms of assists and attacking flair, he would be one of England's biggest attacking threats.

Under-fire Gareth Southgate knows his future will be dictated by England’s World Cup performance rather than previous successes or the fact his contract runs until 2024.

“I am not foolish,” the England boss said. "My sole focus at the moment is to get the team right We’re focused on a good performance, a good result, then you’re looking towards the World Cup. And I know ultimately I will be judged on what happens at that World Cup.

“Contracts are irrelevant in football because managers can have three, four, five-year contracts and if results aren’t good enough then you accept that’s time to part ways. Why would I be any different? I’m not arrogant enough to think that having a contract should protect me in any way from results.”

Put to Southgate that the Football Association remains supportive, he said: “And I am absolutely appreciative of that. But of course we understand how the mood changes with the results, and it has changed.

“I am realistic about that. I’ll be judged on what’s delivered in Qatar and I am perfectly happy to be judged in that way. History is history. You’re judged on the next match and you’re judged on the next tournament.

“What happens to me is irrelevant, frankly. It’s about the team. The most important thing is the team and the success of the team.”

It's a landmark for Harry Kane tonight as he becomes just the fifth player to start 50 games as captain of the England men’s national side after Bobby Moore (90), Billy Wright (90), Bryan Robson (64) and David Beckham (59).

Darren Hindle: A lot of moaning about Maguire being picked. We haven't scored from open play in 500 minutes and for some reason we are focussed on a defender that has played well whenever picked.

Josh Dolphin: The link between Bellingham & Foden was a rare brightspark v Italy. If Southgate switches to a 4-3-3 mid-match, those two being closer together on the pitch could bear fruit.

Raheem Sterling is able to empathise with Gareth Southgate after the England manager was jeered by his own fans, recalling a time he “dreaded” international duty having suffered similar treatment.

Southgate has come under increasing pressure after defeat to Italy on Friday not only confirmed Nations League relegation but extended England’s competitive winless streak to five competitive games.

Sterling, who was booed during Euro 2016, said: “There was a period when I first came into the squad it was really enjoyable and there was a period where I actually dreaded coming.

“I think it was Spain away (in 2018), it was a moment when I scored. My mentality was OK, no matter good or bad, I needed to just focus on myself and not listen to what the outside world was saying.

“That’s definitely been something that’s put me in good stead. No matter doing good or bad, it’s to keep level-headed and focused and not listen to the noise. That’s a message that can definitely go with the squad here in the next couple of months. We know there will be noise and we need to block it out if we're going to do well in this tournament.

“I don’t think any of the boys are panicking. We are taking responsibility, knowing results haven’t been right and that we need to fix that."

I think loyalty goes to a stage, and when Harry Maguire lets England down then Gareth Southgate will have to look at it again.

Especially the other night watching it, other than the first five to 10 minutes, I think Maguire was very assured and good on the ball. He didn't really get exposed in the wide areas. I don't think there's any reason why Southgate would take him out of the team.
