Doidge should be hitting the target with that header

  3. CLOSE!published at 26 mins

    Hibernian 0-0 Cove Rangers

The first big chance falls to Christian Doidge as he runs on to a lovely cross from Ewan Henderson but the Hibs striker steers his header just wide from near the penalty spot.

  4. Postpublished at 24 mins

    Hibernian 0-0 Cove Rangers

A chance for Cove to load the Hibs penalty box, but Fraser Fyvie's free-kick is poorly struck and Josh Doig is able to step in and hoof it away before he's barged over.

  5. YELLOW CARDpublished at 23 mins

    Hibernian 0-0 Cove Rangers

Hibs wing-back Chris Cadden is crudely chopped down by Connor Scully and that's the first booking of the night.

  6. Postpublished at 20 mins

    Hibernian 0-0 Cove Rangers

That's more like it from Chris Mueller as he snaffles up a slack defensive pass and cuts inside his man to fire off a shot. Goalkeeper Kyle Gourlay bats it away awkwardly.

This'll do the Cove the world of good. Getting a few touches, getting comfortable with the surroundings, they'll thrive on this. They're all looking for the ball, no-one is shying away from it.

Right on cue, Mueller hares after a pass from Ewan Henderson but his cross from left is a poor one.

  9. Postpublished at 17 mins

    Hibernian 0-0 Cove Rangers

Chris Mueller is Martin Boyle's replacement this evening but I'm not sure the little American forward has had a meaningful touch yet.

  10. Postpublished at 14 mins

    Hibernian 0-0 Cove Rangers

Christian Doidge manages to hold the ball up inside the Cove penalty area but Ewan Henderson is in too much of a rush with the shot and simply smashes it into a couple of defenders right in front of him.

  11. Postpublished at 11 mins

Christian Doidge goes after a long ball over the top but the Hibs striker is flagged offside - incorrectly it turns out.

Cove are holding a high line. They will be happy to not see Martin Boyle, because Hibs have no-one with the pace to get in behind

  13. Postpublished at 9 mins

Ewan Henderson is over a free-kick 25 yards out. He gets it up over the defensive wall but it doesn't come down until the shot reaches the stand behind the goal.

That's the sort of thing that will give Cove a bit of confidence. A bit of slackness in that Hibs defence

  15. Postpublished at 4 mins

    Hibernian 0-0 Cove Rangers

A scare for the home fans as Hibs goalkeeper Matt Macey crashes an attempted clearance against Cove forward Mitch Megginson. Luckily for the lanky custodian, the ball cannons across the face of goal and away to safety.

  16. Postpublished at 3 mins

    Hibernian 0-0 Cove Rangers

The home side are swarming forward but haven't been able to fashion a chance just yet.

It looks like Swedish midfielder Melker Hallberg is dropping into a three-man defence for Hibs.

    And away we go.

I know this is on the telly and it's the middle of January amidst a hectic run of fixtures but there are a lot of empty seats for what is Shaun Maloney's second home game. Prices were slashed too.

  18. Can Hibs find their way to Hampden once more?published at 19:43 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2022

    Hibernian v Cove Rangers (19:45)

After enjoying Wigan's FA Cup party, Fraser Fyvie went on to lift the Scottish Cup with Hibs in 2016 as the Edinburgh club ended their long, long wait for a third success in the tournament.

Hibs haven't won anything since but have been remarkably consistent in cup competitions, losing in last year's Scottish Cup final and in December's League Cup final just a few days before Shaun Maloney officially took over.

Hibs reached the semis of the League Cup last season too. The term before they reached the last four of both.

  19. Scottish Cup missing from Maloney's medalspublished at 19:40 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2022

    Hibernian v Cove Rangers (19:45)

In his two stints with Celtic Shaun Maloney won five titles and picked up the League Cup three times but never even played in a Scottish Cup final.

"It was a pretty hard squad to get into when I was young and I had a bit of bad luck with injuries," he told BBC Scotland. "You need a bit of luck in the cups and unfortunately for me I missed a few finals through injury.

"It doesn’t irk me. Winning the FA Cup probably helps.”

Maloney set up the only goal when Wigan shocked Man City at Wembley in 2013. His Easter Road assistant Gary Caldwell was a team-mate that day and Cove Rangers' Fraser Fyvie was on the bench.
