Manchester United crash out of the FA Cup as Championship side Middlesbrough come from behind at Old Trafford and then emerge victorious in a nail-biting 16-shot penalty shootout.

Manchester United

Manchester United statement: "We can confirm that Old Trafford was affected by a power surge shortly before tonight’s game and this caused the failure of some stadium systems, including tills in our food and beverage kiosks.

"We sincerely regret the disappointment and inconvenience this caused fans.

"All remaining hot and perishable food was given away for free to supporters as they left the stadium."

Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough manager Chris Wilder: "We are delighted, the opposition will be wondering how they did not progress, it is the magic of the cup, we rode our luck, took our chances and took it to a shootout.

"You can't do anything when it goes to penalties, you just hope they are positive and they took a fabulous approach. You give yourself an opportunity to witness scenes like tonight, 10,000 fans coming down the road and going away happy.

"Dean Henderson is a good goalkeeper, I know he is about and saved a few penalties when we worked together but a fabulous night for the football club and why fans around the world enjoy the FA Cup.

"You cannot get any better than winning at Old Trafford on a Friday night."

Manchester United

Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick tells BBC MOTD: "How can it be accidental if he controls the ball up in the air with his hand? It was clear it should not stand but in the end I was really surprised it stood.

"In the first half we should have easily been 3-0 up and second half we had chances too. We should have won the game in normal time. On penalties it can happen what happened today."

On Anthony Elanga: "We will try to encourage him again, be there for him and it can happen to more experienced players. We could not have had more players to take it, there was Luke Shaw, Phil Jones and the goalkeeper."

"Paul Pogba played OK, what I expected him to play."

Middlesbrough forward Duncan Watmore talking to ITV: "It was completely accidental the handball. Amazing to make a difference and set up Crooksy. Me and Crooksy were in a United age group team together here - so it is even more special."

Middlesbrough boss Chris Wilder talking to ITV: "The FA Cup is alive and kicking, especially in Middlesbrough. I told the players it was all about making memories.

"We rode our luck and took our chances. The decisions that are made through VAR have changed since I left the Premier League - I thought straight away it was handball. I thought it would be chalked out and delighted it wasn't."

Manchester United

Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick: "Incredibly disappointed, we should have won and killed off the game in the first half. Crossbar, post, missed penalty and numerous chances. It should have been 2-0 or 3-0. We conceded a goal which I don't understand why it stood. He controlled it with his hand.

"In the moment when they scored, it was clear that VAR would not allow this goal to stand. We were not well positioned in that moment, too open and allowed them the counter, we should have won the game.

"Anthony Elanga, anyone can imagine how he us, he is shattered and absolutely disappointed. It was the eighth penalty which had all converted."

Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough defender Sol Bamba: "I wanted to take a penalty and moemnts like this I am stil playing football, we had very good away fans and ti was set for us tonight.

"All the way through my treatment it was for moments like this. The hard work, support from my family and football community I can only thank them. Without their support I wouldn't be there. I still have the drive to keep going.

"The family and Mrs were in distress and panic but it is pure joy and I will enjoy it tonight.

"It is a fairytale, enjoy being back on the pitch after everything I have been though and long may it continue.

"In this competition you never know, we just knocked out one of the favourites in Manchester United."

Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough's Paddy McNair talking to ITV: "It was unbelievable. We started the first half really slow but we deserved the win overall.

"They weren't taking their chances and that gave us a lift.

"We are on very good form. We rode our luck at times.

"I had seven very good years here."

I don't think Manchester United did enough on the night in total to win the game. I think Middlesbrough matched them in every department.

Where do United go from here? They just have to try and get into that top four and try and do as well as they can in the Champions League. That is all Manchester United have to play for.

"Que sera sera, whatever will be, will be, we're going to Wembley," chant the Boro fans.

The 10,000 have not left their seats and might not do until the early hours of Saturday morning.

The United players made a swift exit from the pitch but all the Middlesbrough squad are still there, enjoying their moment.

A tremendous night for them and a job very well done.

He comes striding on to the pitch to congratulate his players.

What a night for the 10,000 Boro fans in the corner of the ground, bouncing up and down.
