Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes made virtually the same forward run just then.

Ronaldo made a gesture towards his Portugal team-mate as if to say 'if one of us goes, the other stays'.

Manchester United are not a smooth unit at present.

    Man Utd 0-0 Middlesbrough

United earn their first corner of the evening.

They don't score from set-pieces, might as well give Boro the ball back.

And they do, Harry Maguire heads over at the back post.

    Alex Bruce

Middlesbrough mean business. They are certainly not camping behind the ball. They are open, expansive and looking to attack.

Paul Pogba chasing back and making an inch-perfect sliding challenge.

Ralf Rangnick working miracles at United.

    The Portuguese connection.

Diogo Dalot feeds compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo on the edge of the box.

The United forward flicks the ball up but laces a weak, lofted strike straight into the hands of Joe Lumley.

    Man Utd 0-0 Middlesbrough

Dean Henderson getting a rare runout for Manchester United tonight.

He'll want to impress but knows even a clean sheet and 10 spectacular saves will see David de Gea come back in for the next game.

    Man Utd 0-0 Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough have their first attacking opportunity of the game with a free-kick down the right.

Skipper Jonny Howson, who won't be popular around these parts being a former Leeds player, swings it in but Raphael Varane heads away.

Nani is the player of the streets GOAT. On his day he'd run rings round anyone. He's 35 and his debut for Venezia he still dazzled round like he was 23. I wouldn't even mind if he rejoined United. Could do with a little dazzle.

  10. CLOSE!published at 5 mins

    Man Utd 0-0 Middlesbrough

A sharp intake of breath around Old Trafford as Cristiano Ronaldo leaps into the air and meets Luke Shaw's cross with a stunning overhead kick.

But unlike the time for Real Madrid against Juventus in the Champions League, he doesn't quite connect properly and it's an easy save for Joe Lumley.

The Boro goalkeeper has been very busy in the opening five minutes.

  11. Keane's Boro explosionpublished at 20:07 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2022

    Man Utd 0-0 Middlesbrough

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport at Old Trafford

It was after a 4-1 defeat at Middlesbrough in October 2005 that Roy Keane was asked to analyse Manchester United's performance for MUTV.

Keane's assessment was so scathing, it was never broadcast. Two weeks later, he left the club.

Keane is working for ITV tonight, Cristiano Ronaldo played in the game and does so this evening.

It'll be absolutely fabulous if Joe Lumley keeps a clean sheet tonight.

Better from Joe Lumley on this occasion, coming quickly and decisively off his line to collect a through ball which Marcus Rashford was looking to get on the end of.

  14. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 2 mins

    Man Utd 0-0 Middlesbrough

What a mix-up at the back for Middlesbrough and United almost take the lead in the second minute.

Visiting goalkeeper Joe Lumley comes right to the edge of his box but feels he is about to handle outside so lets go off it.

It ricochets off Dael Fry and lands into the path of Jadon Sancho 25 yards out, but the England international's lofted effort rattles the crossbar.

Bruno Fernandes is unable to convert the rebound.

That would have been a disastrous start for Chris Wilder's men.

In addition to Ralf Rangnick laying a wreath and their players wearing black armbands, Manchester United are also hosting 44 family members of the eight players who died in the Munich Air Disaster in the directors' box at Old Trafford tonight.

Tonight is the closest game Manchester United play at Old Trafford to the anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster.

February 6 will mark the 64th anniversary since the crash, when 23 passengers, including eight players, lost their lives when United's plane crashed after a re-fuelling stop in Munich on the way back from a European Cup tie in Belgrade.

The normal service will take place at Old Trafford on Sunday but tonight, interim boss Ralf Rangnick will lay a wreath on the pitch before kick-off and United's players will wear black armbands.

Flags around the ground are flying at half mast.

Middlesbrough have progressed from only one of their last 10 FA Cup ties against Premier League opposition, though that one instance did come in Manchester in 2014-15, beating City 2-0 at the Etihad.
