    Liverpool 0-0 Cardiff

The windy conditions are proving to be very tricky for the host.

A number of times now they've sent a cross straight out of play.

This time Trent Alexander-Arnold the guilty party.

Poor free-kick from Trent Alexander-Arnold, straight into the wall that does its job very bravely.

James Collins takes one flush in the face.

    New nose please.

Naby Keita still a big jetlagged after returning from Afcon duty? The Guinean shanks a horrible shot well wide.

Joe Collett-Cramp: I'm not saying that was a clear cut penalty as it wasn't, but you can guarantee it gets given if/when Salah flops under a similar challenge any other week.

Ben: If that's Liverpool attacking that's being given as a pen.

  7. CLOSE!published at 24 mins

    Liverpool 0-0 Cardiff

Great move from Cardiff, fashioning their best chance of the game.

Will Vaulks collects a cross-field pass and from long way out has an early go at goal, which flashes just wide of the post.

    Almost caught Caoimhin Kelleher out.

Cardiff fans would have expected a long afternoon today, even before the teams were announced, but they're enjoying their trip to Anfield.

They're making all the noise so far, and they've even had a mischievous song for Virgil van Dijk, suggesting tongue-in-cheek that the Liverpool man is an inferior version of former Cardiff centre-back Sol Bamba. A reference to Neil Warnock's claim to that effect a few years ago, again a little playful.

    Liverpool 0-0 Cardiff

All very aerial inside the Cardiff box but the visiting defenders are dealing with it...for now.

First of all it is front of the Kop, second looking it looks like he is looking for it. Third view, I am thinking about it.

  11. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 18 mins

    Liverpool 0-0 Cardiff

Very clumsy from Ibrahima Konate, bumping in to the back of Mark Harris inside the area.

The Cardiff man looks towards referee Andy Madeley, who waves play on.

The Liverpool defender is very lucky to get away with that one.

    Liverpool 0-0 Cardiff

Cardiff's Mark Harris wins the ball cleanly ahead of Jordan Henderson, but the Reds skipper lands heavily and needs attention from the physio.

The fall takes the wind out of his lungs.

    Liverpool 0-0 Cardiff

Takumi Minamino has been on the fringes of the Liverpool team since joining from RB Salzburg a couple of years ago.

Sending a cross all the way out of play won't help his cause.

Cardiff are under massive pressure and you just expect the ball will fall to a Liverpool boot in the area soon. Cardiff are defending incredibly well but at some point they need to hold the ball up at the other end of the field.

Seeing Ng getting on the ball more than Alexander-Arnold will make my job a lot easier.

  16. Postpublished at 10 mins

    Liverpool 0-0 Cardiff

It's going to be a long afternoon for Cardiff.

Already, Bluebirds shirts are having to crane and stretch every sinew to clear balls into the box.

So important they maintain their concentration.

  17. DISALLOWED GOALpublished at 9 mins

    Liverpool 0-0 Cardiff

Cardiff are sitting so deep and are asking for trouble.

Liverpool have the ball in the back of the net through Takumi Minamino's spin and shot into the corner of the net, but the flag is up for offside.

  18. Postpublished at 7 mins

    Liverpool 0-0 Cardiff

Liverpool starting to find their groove with crisp passes into feet.

Curtis Jones is starting to dictate the game.

  19. GREAT SAVE!published at 3 mins

    Liverpool 0-0 Cardiff

And almost the opener for Liverpool.

Diogo Jota spins his marker delightfully in the box, opening up the space for the shot from 12 yards out, but Dillon Phillips makes a flying save to his left to push the ball away.

  20. Postpublished at 2 mins

    Liverpool 0-0 Cardiff

A decent start from Cardiff as Perry Ng finds space down the right edge of the box but his cross is plucked out of the air by Caoimhin Kelleher.

In the next move, Marlon Pack gets forward but a low shot from range dribbles into the hands of the Liverpool stand-in goalkeeper.
