  4. 'We showed the desire to win'published at 20:13 Greenwich Mean Time 12 March 2022

    FT: Man Utd 3-2 Tottenham

    Manchester United

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick, speaking to Sky Sports: “[Ronaldo] was also energetic today. He was part of the whole team when we had to defend, because we had to defend a lot. It was a top performance by him, but also by the rest of the team.

“I didn’t expect him to score three goals, but I expected him to score. That’s why I decided to play him. His training session was so good on Thursday that I decided to start him and not bring him from the bench. I spoke to him before training on Friday and he said his hip flexor was good enough to play.

“Coming back after two goals showed we had the right mentality. We deserved to win. The performance was aggressive enough at least. We showed the desire to win that game. I said before the game, the team who wants it more will be successful.

“I thought we were really good in the first half. We just allowed them moments when they got into our penalty box too easily. Without Bruno Fernandes and Scott McTominay, it wasn’t easy. It’s a big victory. We had to win today in order to stay in competition for fourth place. It’ll also give us a big boost for the game on Tuesday.

“It’s a challenge with a player like Ronaldo, but he showed today that he still has the quality to play for a club like Manchester United. He also has the quality to be part of the team, and if we want to be successful at the end of the season that’s what we need.”

Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick, speaking to BBC Sport: "We showed the kind reaction we were due to show after the bad second half at the Etihad. The team deserved to win, coming back after two equalising goals in that style was great."

On Ronaldo: "Today it was his best performance, at least since I arrived. He was good in training on Thursday and that is why I decided to start him. Fantastic performance by him but also by the rest of the team.

"He can do it [get 70,000 people off their feet], but again he can also do it only with the team. A fantastic performance. It was not just the three goals today it was also he was part of the team when they were in possession of the ball.

"It was probably our best performance bearing in mind the quality of the opponents. It was necessary, we had to win the game and it will give us a boost for our next game."

  6. 'We have to continue to improve'published at 20:05 Greenwich Mean Time 12 March 2022

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte, speaking to BBC Sport: "We have to be very disappointed for the loss because I think after a good performance like this you deserve much more.

"This team has to continue to improve in many aspects. I think on the pitch the improvements are very clear because the team played in my opinion really good football and created chances to score.

"During the game there are many parts of the game and you have to know when to push and stay calm and I think we have a lot of space to improve. For sure tonight we are to be disappointed for defeat but we will continue to work.

"In every game we are scoring many goals. Against Manchester United we created many chances at the same time we have to improve the experience to manage the situation."

On Ronaldo: "You are talking about a player who is always decisive and has been in his career. Tonight he showed what type of player he is. Without Cristiano Ronaldo for Manchester United it would have been difficult not just to win but also to draw the game."

  9. 'Without Ronaldo, it's not a good night for United'published at 19:57 Greenwich Mean Time 12 March 2022

    FT: Man Utd 3-2 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte, speaking to Sky Sports: “It’s difficult to explain this loss. I think we didn’t deserve to lose, but at the same time we need to understand how we can improve.

“We had a good game, but we have to show more experience to manage certain situations. There are many parts in a game and sometimes you need to understand when to push, to go strong, to increase the intensity or when to be calm and not hurry. In that aspect, we have a lot of space for improvement. On the pitch we’ve had a great improvement.

“You can’t buy experience. You also improve your experience after this type of game. We have many young players in the team and hopefully after this game, they have the possibility to learn.

“We were at 1-1, then after one or two minutes they scored the second goal. We’re conceding a lot from set pieces in this period. We know we need to improve if we want to reach the level we need to be competitive for the top places.”

On Ronaldo: “We’re talking about a player who not only tonight showed he is a top, top player. Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are the two best players in the world in this era. When you play against this type of player, they’re decisive. Without Cristiano Ronaldo, for United it wouldn’t have been a good night.”

  11. Is Ronaldo the top scorer ever?published at 19:51 Greenwich Mean Time 12 March 2022

There have been claims Cristiano Ronaldo's goals make him the all-time top scorer in football history with 807.

Josef Bican, the man who he is reported to have passed, scored an estimated 805 goals in his career.

But they include reserve, amateur and non-official international goals - so his figure is lower really.

Ronaldo is certainly the all-time top scorer of top-level players.

Unofficial statisticians RSSSF, external say three players have scored more than Ronaldo (including 950+ goals for Bican) but they are all relatively unknown players with uncertain tallies, which include non-official goals.

  12. 'Ronaldo was at his best'published at 19:45 Greenwich Mean Time 12 March 2022

    FT: Man Utd 3-2 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, speaking to Sky Sports: “I think we had a good team performance, even if we can do better with the goals we conceded. We know at this level it’s all about details. Cristiano Ronaldo also helped a lot today to get United the result.

“It’s painful because we feel we deserve better. But in football you always get what you deserve and we now need to focus on next week.

“I think [Ronaldo] was at his best, very aggressive in the box. It’s difficult to control him, but when you concede set pieces you need to look for that. The second goal is from a cross and we could have defended it a bit better. For the first goal, when you give him a little bit of space he can do what he did.

“We saw a lot of positive things from us, which is very frustrating. We knew this game was really important for the top-four race, but we won’t give up and we’ll continue to try to get better.

“If you talk about the result, obviously it’s negative. We need to analyse and try again to improve certain aspects of our game. Now the game is done and we can only manage the games ahead of us.”

Ed Franklin: This United team are poor. Spurs have played with too little confidence and not enough energy. Huge chance missed to compete for top 4. Again. Awful.

Paul Clarke: Beating City twice in a season and losing twice to this Utd team basically sums up this Spurs team. Completely inconsistent and baffling. At least Utd are consistently poor in a poor season for them.

  14. 'That's what Ronaldo does'published at 19:38 Greenwich Mean Time 12 March 2022

    FT: Man Utd 3-2 Tottenham

    Manchester United

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba, speaking to Sky Sports: “Ronaldo was brilliant. I think that’s all we needed – a reaction. We scored beautiful goals. Even when we conceded a goal, we came back and scored again. The mentality was there again today.

“Everybody knows Cristiano – there’s no need to talk about him. That’s what he does. He didn’t play in the last game, but he comes back and scores three goals. Everybody’s happy.

“It was good today. You can hear the fans – they were pushing us and feeling it. I think today was a very good performance as a team and a very good reaction from the City game.

“We kept believing. In the second half we didn’t get the nice passing, and the movement I think wasn’t there. We gave them a bit of confidence, that’s why they scored. But we got a corner and scored the winning goal.

“It’s a boost. We needed it to go again. We want the top four and they were opponents who are looking for the top four also. It was a good win and a good performance.”

Manchester United's Paul Pogba, speaking to BBC Sport: "It was a beautiful game and a beautiful reaction from us. We hurt them at the right times and Ronaldo did what he does best.

"He has never been a problem. You have the best striker in history in our team, it cannot be a problem. Today he showed why he is Cristiano Ronaldo. The performance from him and all the team was very brilliant.

"We reacted very well. We kept pushing. The team worked. We found the right play and hurt them like that."
