  1. 'It's an interesting time for Chelsea'published at 12:46 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2022

    Chelsea v Newcastle (14:00 GMT)

The concern is for the future of Chelsea. That is miles down the list of what is happening to the people of Ukraine which is unthinkable.

For Chelsea, it’s an interesting time. I’ve got a feeling it’s going to survive well but not necessarily in the shape it has been in for the last 19 years.

You may ask questions a year down the line and Chelsea fans may be a little happier, they might not be winning as many trophies.

  2. Fourth spot up for grabspublished at 12:44 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2022

Chelsea are 10 points off Liverpool in second place but can reduce that gap slightly with a win over Newcastle today.

The race for the final Champions League spot is very much still on though.

Manchester United's win over Tottenham yesterday saw them move up but Arsenal can take fourth spot back with a win over Leicester this evening.

West Ham have played more games than Arsenal - who have the advantage - but can go level on points with them for at least a few hours if they beat Aston Villa.

Wolves, who could harm Everton's relegation battle, are looking to leapfrog Tottenham and potentially West Ham.

  3. Where next for Chelsea FC?published at 12:39 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2022

    Chelsea v Newcastle (14:00 GMT)

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport at Stamford Bridge

These have been a few days Chelsea fans will never forget with every day bringing more worrying developments that threaten their entire future.

On Thursday, owner Roman Abramovich was sanctioned by the UK government as part of its response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, a sanction MPs had been calling for and what Abramovich, whose assets including Chelsea FC have been frozen, had been fearing with his frantic attempts to sell the club.

Chelsea cannot sell any more tickets for games, its club shop will be closed, and the club is unable to buy or sell players.

The government said it would issue a special licence that allows fixtures to be fulfilled, staff to be paid and existing ticket holders to attend matches, but that’s easier said than done with the club’s wage bill at £28m a month.

Shirt sponsor ‘3’ has left, kit manufacturer Nike wants to do likewise and the club’s bank accounts have been ‘temporarily suspended’. What happens next is unsure. There are plenty of interested parties looking to buy the club from Abramovich but that process has paused with the government trying to ensure the Russian does not profit from any sale - while Chelsea haemorrhage money in the meantime.

Where Chelsea, the current European and World champions, go from here, nobody knows. These are unique times for English football and for one of its biggest clubs.

  4. The relegation battlepublished at 12:37 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2022

Newcastle have pulled away from the relegation zone in recent weeks with some impressive results so they have a bit of breathing space.

Leeds have been on a downwards spiral and really need a boost against bottom side Norwich today - who themselves are in serious trouble.

Everton have games in hand but sit just a point above the bottom three, while Watford could go level on points with the Toffees if they win today and Frank Lampard's side suffer defeat to Wolves.

  5. Stamford Bridge in light of Abramovichpublished at 12:33 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2022

    Chelsea v Newcastle (14.00 GMT)

This is Chelsea's first home game since Roman Abramovich was sanctioned by the UK government.

The Premier League disqualified him as a director of the club too, while on Saturday, sleeve sponsor Hyundai became the latest company to suspend its deal with Chelsea.

The prospective sale of the club has also been temporarily halted.

A number of fans have voiced their displeasure at the situation which has created unrest due to the closure of stores, an inability to sell match tickets and uncertainty over the club's future.

On Thursday, Chelsea supporters sang Abramovich's name during their win over Norwich City and have since been urged to stop.
