  9. League Two game of the daypublished at 14:55 Greenwich Mean Time 19 March 2022

Oldham Athletic v Exeter City (15:00 GMT)

The games are running out and for both these sides, three points is a must.

A win for Exeter City and they could move as high as second in the table.

But the race for promotion is so tight that the Grecians can’t afford any slip-ups - even the sides in mid-table are still eyeing-up promotion.

It’ll be a 500-mile round-trip for Exeter but with only one defeat in their past 12, the games can’t come soon enough for Matt Taylor’s men.

Fourteen-goal striker Matt Jay usually takes the plaudits, but it was a Timothée Dieng double was enough to beat Crawley 2-1 in midweek. Ten league goals for a man who’d suffered successive relegations with Southend United underlies the ability of his manager to get the best out of his players.

It’s hard to avoid cliché when describing Oldham’s task today. John Sheridan’s side are second-bottom and with the "Shezurrection" seven-game unbeaten run all but a fading memory, after three losses in a row, a win is a must for Latics.

So much of Oldham’s hopes lie on Davis Keillor-Dunn. He is Oldham’s match winner. Whether it’s unlocking defences or going for the spectacular, the attacker’s eleven goals this season have been crucial. After no goals in his past four however, I'm sure he’ll be determined to help put smiles on the home fans’ faces come full-time.

With games in hand for both these sides, their destinies are in their own hands. Now’s the time to show what they're worth.

Cheltenham Town v AFC Wimbledon (15:00 GMT)

Will the home side be at the races today?

Michael Duff gave his men the day off for some much-deserved team bonding at Cheltenham Races on Tuesday.

Their 3-1 victory away at Morecambe last weekend was their first away win in four months and was a big step to securing League One status next season.

They’ve won three of their past four home games and that home form is what has seen them rise to 13th.

They will go into today's game confident they can get all three points and with League One's player of the month in their frontline, can Alfie May be the man to fire them to victory again?

AFC Wimbledon's defence will be on red alert as he’s been in scintillating form with 11 goals in his past nine games.

The two sides have met twice already this season and both games have produced plenty of goals. It finished 2-2 in the reverse fixture. But an injury-hit Wimbledon will be hoping they can replicate their 4-3 win that saw them knock Cheltenham out of the FA Cup back in December.

Mark Robinson’s men are in terrible form. A run that has now seen them go 19 games without a win. Their last win was back on 7 December against Accrington Stanley. They start the afternoon just outside the relegation zone on goal difference and you do fear for AFC Wimbledon - if they don’t pick up points soon then relegation looks ominous.

  11. Championship game of the daypublished at 14:53 Greenwich Mean Time 19 March 2022

Huddersfield Town v Bournemouth (15:00 GMT)

The surprise package against the big spenders.

Huddersfield have shocked everyone this season by being in the promotion shake up and whilst a minority continue to think they’ll drop away, Carlos Corberan’s team will have other ideas.

Sure, immediate form might raise a few alarm bells. A disappointing draw at West Brom, after leading 2-0, was followed by a midweek defeat by Millwall. But before that, Huddersfield felt unstoppable.

A stunning run of 16 league games unbeaten (18 in all competitions) saw them march into second place at one stage and the dream of returning to the Premier League for the first time in three years was very much alive.

And three is very much the magic number. Huddersfield now sit third, three points off the top two and three points behind today’s opponents. They’ve also played three games more than Bournemouth, so victory today is vital.

If Bournemouth were to win, Scott Parker’s side would feel they’ve got one foot back in the big time.

A win would take them at least five points clear and they’ve got games in hand on the chasing pack, you feel they’d be hard to catch.

But after a stunning start to the season, Bournemouth haven’t been at their fluent best for a while now.

Five points from three games against Peterborough, Derby and Reading will likely have left the Cherries’ fans disappointed, but the bigger picture shows just one defeat in seven and that form, coupled with victory today, will surely be enough to get Bournemouth promoted, even if they do have a ridiculously tough run-in.

Whatever the result, this is a game that will have huge ramifications on the Championship promotion race.

  13. League Two previewpublished at 14:50 Greenwich Mean Time 19 March 2022

Leaders wait until Monday while chasers scrap it out

    CobblersImage source, Rex Features

Nine fixtures on the way in League Two this afternoon after Newport County missed their chance to move up to second on Friday after defeat by Hartlepool United while leaders Forest Green will play Colchester United on Monday.

But there's still plenty of intrigue in the promotion race to keep us occupied.

Northampton Town in second face seventh-placed Bristol Rovers who occupy the last of the play-off places after three successive wins.

Just a point then separates Tranmere Rovers, Exeter City and Swindon Town from fourth to sixth - Tranmere take on another promotion contender in eighth-placed Sutton United, Exeter travel to under-pressure Oldham who are still three points adrift of safety while Swindon head to Crawley Town.

Port Vale are still in the mix just outside the play-off places, it's a trip to Bradford City for Vale while Mansfield will be hoping to arrest back-to-back defeats when they host Stevenage and their new boss Steve Evans.

Bottom-placed Scunthorpe United need a result for sure as they are 10 points adrift of third-from-bottom Stevenage as they head to Salford City.

Mansfield Town and Stevenage's fixture was postponed on Friday afternoon following a Covid outbreak at Stevenage.

Latest chapter in the nail-biting races for promotion and survival

    Rotherham cellyImage source, Rex Features

All 24 sides in action in League One this afternoon as leaders Rotherham hope to keep second-placed Wigan at bay as they host Shrewsbury Town.

Wigan are just four points behind the Millers with two games in hand but face a tricky fixture at home to relegation-threatened Morecambe.

Behind the top two come the chasers led by MK Dons who will be looking to extend their 11-match unbeaten run when they head to Cambridge United.

Then just three points separate the next five sides from Oxford United in fourth to Wycombe Wanderers in eighth.

Oxford, Plymouth and Sunderland will all be looking for positive results to stay in the top six against Ipswich, Accrington and Lincoln respectively while Sheffield Wednesday and Wycombe are looking to gatecrash the party with wins against Gillingham and Portsmouth.

Down the other end, there's just a point between four sides either side of the dotted line.

Fleetwood and AFC Wimbledon will be hoping to stay the right side of it while Gillingham and Morecambe will want to upset the promotion ambitions of their opponents.

Fleetwood could put a nail in second-from bottom Doncaster's survival hopes at the same time.

Let's mark your cards for what to keep an eye on in Leagues One and Two this afternoon...

  16. Two teams with little to shout aboutpublished at 14:47 Greenwich Mean Time 19 March 2022

Swansea City v Birmingham City (15:00 GMT)

Neither Swansea or Birmingham fans have had much to shout about this season and you get the impression both are already thinking about the summer and how they can restart the next campaign.

For a club that finished in the play-off places the last two seasons, Swansea's current position of 15th will be a disappointment.

Birmingham, meanwhile, sit perilously close to the drop zone in 20th, even though they have a comfortable buffer of 11 points to Reading below them.

The Blues have only won three times in 2022 however, but if they beat Swansea today it'll be the first time they've done the league double over them since the 1979-1980 season.

  17. Luton hoping to stay in the packpublished at 14:45 Greenwich Mean Time 19 March 2022

Hull City v Luton Town (15:00 GMT)

    Nathan JonesImage source, PA Media

Luton Town travel to Hull City this afternoon you would imagine with some caution after seeing how the Tigers dented the play-off hopes of another side in Coventry City on Wednesday.

The Hatters bounced back from their home defeat by fellow play-off challengers QPR last Sunday by making light work of Preston in midweek but Nathan Jones will be desperate to start stringing some wins together in the run-in and arrest their inconsistent form that reads WLWLW in their past five.

Any sort of slip up this afternoon could leave the door open for a number of other sides around them as Sheffield United's earlier win pushed them down to sixth.

  18. A tale of two types of formpublished at 14:43 Greenwich Mean Time 19 March 2022

Stoke City v Millwall (15:00 GMT)

Millwall manager Gary RowettImage source, Getty Images

Since losing 3-0 to Fulham at the start of February, Millwall have gone on an eight-match unbeaten run and hold the position of the league’s in-form team as it stands.

The Lions have moved up from 15th to 10th as well, and sit just two points off the play-offs very much in the scrap for a top six finish.

Manager Gary Rowett – who left Stoke in 2019 - has a decent record when it comes to facing his former teams and is similarly unbeaten in his last seven against his old employers.

Compare Millwall to under-pressure Stoke, who languish second bottom of the form table. You have to go back to 8 February - or eight matches - to find when the Potters last won.

  19. Can West Brom sneak into play-off fight?published at 14:41 Greenwich Mean Time 19 March 2022

Bristol City v West Bromwich Albion (15:00 GMT)

Callum Robinson celebrates West Brom goalImage source, Rex Features

After a torrid run that saw them sink down the table, West Brom are unbeaten in their last three matches under Steve Bruce. That includes an impressive win over league leaders Fulham on Tuesday.

They still sit in 12th place with the play-offs six points away, and the pressure will be on against Bristol City to wrap up another three points before the international break.

Remarkably, the last time the Baggies saw back-to-back away wins was two years ago and to complicate things the Robins are unpredictable opponents.

Nigel Pearson’s sides lack of consistency has been a problem this season and they have one win and four defeats in their last five. Their weakness in set pieces will also be something West Brom will want to exploit.

  20. Ince reunites with another former employerpublished at 14:39 Greenwich Mean Time 19 March 2022

Reading v Blackburn Rovers (15:00 GMT)

    InceImage source, Getty Images

Another nervy afternoon in store you'd expect for Reading and Blackburn supporters as they both hope their respective sides can claim three points for differing objectives.

Reading found a late equaliser at Bournemouth on Tuesday to secure what may ultimately prove to be a vital point while Blackburn came from behind on the same evening to beat Derby.

Rovers arguably did Reading a favour that evening by denying a fellow struggler, but they will want to give no freebies in Berkshire today against former boss Paul Ince in the hope they can chip away at the five-point deficit to second-placed Bournemouth while also holding on to their spot in the play-off places.

Reading meanwhile will want to put some more breathing space between themselves and the bottom three after Barnsley's earlier defeat by Sheffield United kept them at two points adrift.
