  4. 'Norwich game like a final'published at 22:23 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2022

    FT: Leeds 0-3 Aston Villa

    Leeds United

Leeds boss Jesse Marsch, speaking to Amazon Prime: "I was a little bit surprised at how we felt the pressure of the moment.

"We talked a lot about staying calm and focused on how we wanted to play and in the first half I felt we played with a bit of fear.

"Our best phase in the match was the first 15 minutes of the second half but then it became 2-0 and we were in a hole trying to dig ourselves out. After that it was a lot of long balls and individual moments. The second goal changed the momentum.

"We need Patrick Bamford, we will see how he responds after this outing. I felt he had a couple of dangerous moments.

"It is basically a final on Sunday [against Norwich] and we have to find a way to get a result in that match.

"I've heard so much about the crowd here and the crowd was fantastic but I think the players want to do so well for themselves and the fans it is almost a massive weight on their shoulders.

"We had a good first step and then our second step was not good so we have to regroup. We have a short turnaround and that can be good for us.

"I knew when I came there was a lot of momentum working against us. We had to stay calm and help the players find their way and that is still the case.

"I will do everything I can to help these guys try to do better and play better and get better results."

  5. 'We were a joy to watch'published at 22:19 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2022

    FT: Leeds 0-3 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard, speaking to MOTD: "I am very happy.

"The team is in a fantastic place and the mood is good but we have to remain cautious and keep resetting ourselves. Things can change quickly in this league.

"The gameplan worked tonight for sure. The idea was to really dominate the middle of the pitch. We played through the press which gave us a lot of success through the transition. We were a real joy to watch going forward.

"We started both halves a little sloppy if there was one negative."

  6. Leeds players 'chained by pressure' to perform for fanspublished at 22:17 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2022

    FT: Leeds 0-3 Aston Villa

    Leeds United

Leeds boss Jesse Marsch, speaking to MOTD: "Disjointed. A little bit surprised not to be as clear as we were at Leicester.

"I heard a lot about Elland Road and the energy and it was fantastic and I think we have a group who wants to perform for the fans so hard they are almost in some ways chained by the pressure and aren't able to be clear and play with more confidence.

"We addressed that at half time and our best spell was the 15 minutes after the break. At 2-0 it made it hard and we were not able to climb back into the match.

"We have to continue to stay strong and be calm and be clear in what we try to achieve on the pitch.

"It comes with performance. In the second half we were able to bring the crowd into the match and almost find a chance to create a couple of half chances and maybe get a goal.

"It is a big job right now, a big job to help the group be confident, help them to be clear and to transition not just tactically but also with the overall mentality of what the team has been.

"I knew it would not be an automatic flip of the switch but you can see we have more work to do and not much time to get it done."

  7. 'You can't really avoid it'published at 22:15 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2022

    FT: Norwich 1-3 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea's Mason Mount to BBC Sport: "Most important is the win. For me personally to score it feels good. The more numbers I get the happier I am and I'm obviously happy with the win too.

"The last three times I've played here I've scored so it's been good. Really enjoyed it today. I got the goal early on so it made me relaxed. It's been a good stadium for me to play.

"It was very important [to start bright]. It set us up well for the first half. I thought we dominated but we let the game slip away in the second half. We need to be stronger and look at that.

"You can't really avoid it as there's a lot going on. We have to focus on what we do on the pitch. We had a game today and that was the only thing we could focus on. We did that today so now it's about Sunday. You try not to look too much into it.

"There's teams pushing. I don't know how many games have been played but they're coming and we have to stay focused to keep going up. It might be difficult to get second but that's our goal and we need to keep pushing for that."

  8. 'We can take some good stuff'published at 22:10 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2022

    FT: Norwich 1-3 Chelsea

    Norwich City

Norwich striker Teemu Pukki to PLP: "Of course we can't be happy. The first half was not good enough. The second half we did well but it was not enough. At least we gave ourselves a chance to compete but Chelsea is hard to come back. We can take some good stuff from this to Sunday for sure.

"It's not easy especially against a team like Chelsea to come back from 2-0 so early in the game. We showed some mentality in the second half and gave something for the fans to believe we can do it. It was not good enough but something good for Sunday.

"I saw it when it happened and I was pretty sure it would be a penalty. I was waiting for my chance to come. You need to be calm on penalties. The keeper tried to make it hard for me but I focused on myself and was glad I scored from this situation.

"Every game is huge for us. We need to get points if we want to stay in the league. It will be a big game for both of us on Sunday so we need to be ready."

  10. 'It's nice to be off the mark'published at 22:05 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2022

    FT: Southampton 1-2 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle striker Chris Wood, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was a very tough, hard-fought win. They’re a very good side, especially on their home patch. That’s what we’re trying to instil in this team.

"[The win] shows the character in the dressing room. It’s fantastic for the lads. They’ve worked hard and deserve it.

"It’s taken hard work on the training ground, hard work in games. We’re still in a battle, we still need to keep pushing up the table and make ourselves mathematically safe as soon as possible."

On his first Newcastle goal: "It’s nice to be off the mark now and hopefully get more goals in the rest of the season. Jonjo [Shelvey]'s ball made it easy for me to score."

Bruno's first goal: "Bruno with a bit of Brazilian flair. It’s fantastic, unbelievable for him. He’s already a fan favourite, which is great to see because he’s got a lot to give us."

The fans: "They are absolutely outstanding, wherever we go, home or away. They’re always in strong voice."

  12. 'The way we lost was not necessary'published at 22:02 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2022

    FT: Southampton 1-2 Newcastle

    Southampton

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "For sure we’re frustrated. We lost against a team who were fighting hard for the three points, had few chances. We had I think 11 shots inside the box and only scored once. That was the difference today.

"The first 15 minutes after the second goal were tough for us, but in the last 20 minutes I felt we tried again to play how we can play. We had good opportunities to score against a deep-defending team. Players were lying on the ground with cramps and everything. I don’t know if they were doing it to break our rhythm.

"It’s not surprising that we lost a home game again, but the way we lost it for me was not necessary. I don’t know if we were the worst team today – no. It’s not about having possession. Football is a low-scoring game and we need to score in the right moments.

"Winning games in the Premier League is always tough. We have the next chance on Sunday at home and hopefully we’re a little more clinical then."

  13. 'These players need to feel anxiety, we are running out of time'published at 22:00 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2022

    FT: Wolves 4-0 Watford

    Watford

Watford manager Roy Hodgson: "Wolves are a quality team and had a good season with some top-class international players. At half-time we were staring down the barrel of a gun. We had to salvage something from the game and held them at bay.

"It was a wonder chip from Neves but at 3-0 you are in big trouble.

"We didn’t defend the first one well enough, the next two it is pretty obvious. All the goals are mistakes, some are clearer mistakes than others.

"It was disappointing in every respect. We have a very sad dressing room. That is what we sign up for. It gets hard when your players don’t care enough, but we are not in that position yet. We have to hold our hands up that we are not good enough at times, but not that they don’t care.

"These players need to feel anxiety because we are running out of time."

On goalkeeper Ben Foster's performance: "He would be the first to put his hand up. He has been vitally important in every respect, with his performances and the way he is.

"As a keeper, you are a hero or a zero. He has been a hero a number of times, this was the other side of the coin. I would have felt sorry for Gianluigi Donnarumma. If you want to be anonymous, get yourself in midfield."

Wolves were three goals ahead in the 20th minute. This is the joint-fastest team to a three-goal lead in the Premier League this season.

Well I'm sure Watford's midfielders will love reading this!

  17. 'Another level of distraction'published at 21:55 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2022

    FT: Norwich 1-3 Chelsea

    Chelsea

More from Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, speaking to BBC MOTD, on how difficult today has been: "Not as difficult as some people may think. The noise is there and of course it is another level of distraction but still the [team] meeting was the same and the schedule going to the match was the same.

"But of course the subject is there, the talks are going on, so there is a certain distraction. The level of impact it has - the news of today is big - in time we don't know how big. We cannot influence it. That's a good thing or a bad thing. It's a fact.

"That's why we said in the end 'come on, let's focus and let's try to enjoy'. We love the game, we love the sport and we love the competition. Let's go for it."

  18. 'I'd like to see it again'published at 21:53 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2022

    FT: Southampton 1-2 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It’s a really tough place to come, especially when you’re a goal down and not playing at your best level. There were some really good individual performances among a team performance that probably won’t rank as our best.

"I felt we needed to change things tactically. Martin [Dubravka] had to make a couple of really good saves, but we weren’t under big pressure. I thought we were a little bit wasteful with the ball at times, which is a frustration."

On Chris Wood: "All I care about is the team. Obviously I want individuals in the team to flourish. The goal is important to him and it was a great goal as well. It came at a time in the game when we needed it, because we had to respond quite quickly to falling behind."

On Bruno's goal: "I’d like to see it again to properly see how good it was. I didn’t see how he put it in. Until I see it with my own eyes, I won’t know how good it is."

On Newcastle's league position: "It’s better than it was a few weeks ago. Nothing’s changed from before the game. We know we still have some tough games and more work to do."

Richard Lindle: Three out of four ain't bad. Three games in hand over Leeds and Brentford. Now, Everton, can we please start to get away from this relegation zone.

Christopher Woods-Yeates: So Saints get beat by signings that came after the original fixture.

Venturout: Incredible night for NUFC, unbeaten in nine games. What an incredible run, the team finally has that get-up-and-go they had from the days of ‘The Entertainers’. Next game we could potentially move up three places in the PL. Never thought it would be possible last year.

Rishav Dev Poudel: Newcastle up to 14th in the table now. What a turnaround. Eddie Howe has been massive for them.

  20. 'We haven't got any free hits'published at 21:51 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2022

    FT: Norwich 1-3 Chelsea

    Norwich City

More from Norwich manager Dean Smith to BBC Sport on Leeds' in the next game: "We need to work on our strengths. We haven't got any free hits. We have to go into every game to get points. We have to be hard to beat and be on the front foot.

"The second half performance showed [our belief]. It happened at Liverpool where we put in a good performance then they put on the big guns and they did that today when they brought on Romelu Lukaku and N'Golo Kante."
