  2. 'Certainly not at our best'published at 21:32 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2022

It was a mixed performance. There was some rustiness and we were certainly not at our best. We were solid at the back although it was frustrating to concede a goal from a set-piece. We should have been better with the ball but we set some markers and know how we can improve as a team. The energy and physicality of Luxembourg was good so we had to try and match that. I thought we were solid away from home and the substitutes came on and gave us something extra.

Ian Baraclough on Sky Sports, Northern Ireland manager

  3. 'Gavin Whyte did himself no harm'published at 21:19 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2022

I thought we lacked a little bit of composure and we were disjointed. We started well and finished well, in between not so good. Gavin Whyte did himself no harm at all with his performance when he came on. Luxembourg were better than we expected. Maybe we underestimated them. It was a disappointing performance but a great result.

  4. 'Hungary will provide sterner test'published at 21:15 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2022

At the end of the day it's a win for Northern Ireland. Hungary will provide a much sterner test on Tuesday and there will be changes but we will play better at home with the crowd behind us.

    Luxembourg 1-3 Northern Ireland

It's all over and it's a win for Northern Ireland, which for much of the game looked unlikely.

Josh Magennis had NI ahead at half-time but Marvin Martins deservedly equalised after the break.

Substitutes Steven Davis and Gavin Whyte came on and had the desired impact as they netted two goals in the space of three minutes to give the final scoreline a comfortable look.

  7. goal

GOALpublished at 21:02 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2022

    Luxembourg 1-3 Northern Ireland

Two minutes after Davis's goal Gavin Whyte scores his side's third!

Luke Southwood clears his lines with a long kick out which the two home central defenders fail to clear and Whyte takes up possession and delivers a clinical finish, sliding the ball under the Luxembourg goalkeeper into the bottom corner.

Suddenly things are looking a lot rosier for Northern Ireland with five minutes left to play!

  8. goal

GOALpublished at 20:58 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2022

    Luxembourg 1-2 Northern Ireland

Just over seven minutes remaining and substitute Steven Davis pops up with a goal!

Gavin Whyte fed the ball to Niall McGinn, who drilled the ball across the box and Dion Charles had his attempt blocked before the ball fell to Davis who applied the simple finish.

It's a 13th international goal for the Rangers man.

  9. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 20:54 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2022

    Luxembourg 1-1 Northern Ireland

Niall McGinn is the next substitute thrown on by Ian Baraclough, with Stuart Dallas coming off.

Can McGinn provide the spark his side require?

    Luxembourg 1-1 Northern Ireland

Vincent Thill drives in a free-kick from just outside the area but Southwood saves well.

It's been an assured debut for the Reading player so far.

Luxembourg have gone to sleep a bit since they scored the goal. The game has gone off the boil.

    Luxembourg 1-1 Northern Ireland

Steven Davis, Dion Charles and Gavin Whyte have come off the bench to try and spur Northern Ireland to greater efforts.

Can they make the difference which would see their side pick up what would be a morale-boosting victory?

    Luxembourg 1-1 Northern Ireland

    Quote Message

It's so frustrating watching Northern Ireland at times. I'm so disappointed by this performance, surprised actually. We need to up the tempo, we look tired.

  14. GREAT SAVE!published at 20:40 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2022

    Luxembourg 1-1 Northern Ireland

Gerson Rodrigues rifles a shot which forces Luke Southwood into a save as the home side chase the second goal which would see them come from behind to lead this game.

  15. goal

GOALpublished at 20:33 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2022

    Luxembourg 1-1 Northern Ireland

Marvin Martins draws Luxembourg level with a header for his second international goal.

Northern Ireland fail to clear an inswinging corner and Martins is left unmarked to head home from a few yards out.

A poor goal to concede from a Northern Ireland perspective but one that the hosts certainly deserve on the balance of play for much of this game.

Northern Ireland had conceded the corner when Craig Cathcart headed Laurent Jans' dangerous cross from the left round for a corner.

  16. Postpublished at 20:29 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2022

    Luxembourg 0-1 Northern Ireland

Defender Mica Pinto finds some space on the edge of the area and drills a left-foot shot towards goal but his effort is weak and Southwood easily collects.

Nice work by the dangerous Gerson Rodrigues to lay the ball off to Pinto and create the scoring chance.

  17. Changes needed for NIpublished at 20:27 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2022

    Luxembourg 0-1 Northern Ireland

    John O'Neill
Former Northern Ireland defender on BBC Radio Ulster

    Quote Message

We have started the second half in much the same fashion as the end of the first. We need to make changes to get us into this game, maybe a Steven Davis who will put his foot on the ball and get us some possession. Luxembourg are getting far too much room, it's far too easy for them.

  18. Postpublished at 20:23 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2022

    Luxembourg 0-1 Northern Ireland

An early scare for the visitors as a loose pass from Tom Flanagan almost allows Danel Sinani in on goal but the ball rebounds off him and into the grateful hands of the recently introduced Southwood.

Sloppy stuff from Flanagan but NI get away with one on this occasion.
