  1. Forward thinkingpublished at 19:02 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2022

Luxembourg v Northern Ireland (19:15 GMT)

Northern Ireland’s players have only scored one goal between them in their last 465 minutes of play in international football, a Conor Washington goal against Bulgaria last October.

Their only other goal in this time was a Benas Šatkus own goal for Lithuania last November.

Washington has not been included in the squad for this international double-header but forwards Shayne Lavery, Dion Charles, Josh Magennis and Gavin Whyte have all been in good form for their clubs in recent months.

Magennis has scored in both of his last two outings for League One promotion chasers Wigan Athletic, against Morecambe and Crewe Alexandra.

A 3-5-2 formation - or 5-3-2, depending on your outlook - has been the blueprint for Northern Ireland manager Ian Baraclough during his time in charge - and it looks like he is sticking to that formation for tonight's friendly.

While a lot of the talk around this Northern Ireland squad has been of young players coming in, it is a very experienced starting 11 that Baraclough has gone with - apart from goalkeeper Conor Hazard.

Craig Cathcart and Tom Flanagan will flank captain-for-the-night Jonny Evans in a back three, with Stuart Dallas and Shane Ferguson in the wide areas.

It looks like a midfield three of Corry Evans, George Saville and Jordan Thompson, with Shayne Lavery and Josh Magennis in tandem up top.

We'll no doubt see plenty of additions from the bench as the match develops, but it's experience from the start for the visitors.

  3. Josh a late call-uppublished at 18:59 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2022

Luxembourg v Northern Ireland (19;15 GMT)

Bournemouth goalkeeper Josh Clarke was announced as a late call-up to the Northern Ireland squad for the friendlies with Luxembourg and Hungary this afternoon.

Regular first-choice stopper in recent times, Bailey Peacock-Farrell, misses tonight's match through injury but is scheduled to join up with the squad ahead of Tuesday's home fixture with Hungary.

  6. Evans had 'no inkling' about call-uppublished at 18:51 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2022

Luxembourg v Northern Ireland (19:15 GMT)

Having not been included in Ian Baraclough's original 25-strong group for tonight's friendly, the NI boss received the welcome news on Monday that Leicester City defender Jonny Evans would be made available to join the squad and play in tonight's match.

The 93-times capped defender has been recovering from a hamstring injury but played 25 minutes of his club's 2-1 Premier League win over Brentford last weekend.

NI boss Baraclough had been alerted to Evans' availability by Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers, although he will not be part of the squad for Tuesday's encounter with Hungary at Windsor Park.

  7. 'New term' feel about Luxembourg friendlypublished at 18:45 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2022

Luxembourg v Northern Ireland (19:15 GMT)

Good evening everyone and welcome to our live coverage of Northern Ireland's friendly international against Luxembourg.

It's been the most part of five months since Ian Baraclough's men were last in action in a hugely entertaining 0-0 draw with European champions Italy at Windsor Park to end their World Cup qualifying campaign in November so tonight's match has something of a feeling of a fresh new start about it.

Baraclough remains in place for a second term as NI boss and his preparations for a busy Nations League schedule in June, and ultimately a crack at qualification for Euro 2024, begin with this friendly at Stade de Luxembourg.

To the relief of the Green and White Army, captain Steven Davis has opted to continue his international career while Jonny Evans is available for this game after a frustrating period in which his appearances for club and country have been severely hampered by injury.

Along with the established stars, there is some new blood too as Trai Hume, Caolan Boyd-Munce and Paddy Lane receive their first call-ups to the senior squad after previously turning out for the Under-21s.

Stay with us throughout the evening as we bring you live BBC Radio Ulster coverage of the game, plus text updates as the action unfolds.
