We'll be back tomorrow for two more Premier League games.

    Enjoy your evening.

  2. 'We shouldn't have to rely on Ronaldo'published at 18:00 British Summer Time 16 April 2022

    FT: Man Utd 3-2 Norwich

    Manchester United

Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick, speaking to MOTD: "After we scored our second goal we should have made life easier for ourselves but we didn't.

"We lost our structure and weren't aggressive enough.

"It's about being clever and smart. All of a sudden it was 2-2 and David de Gea kept us in the game. But we definitely have to raise our play."

On Cristiano Ronaldo's hat-trick: "We should not only rely on him. We played well at times but we sometimes slowed the game down and didn't make use of overlap situations on the wing. Defensively I was not happy at all.

"The results elsewhere were good. But it doesn't make sense to look to other results. We need to raise our game."

On United's next two games against Liverpool and Arsenal: "If we want to get points out of those games we have to raise our level and play our best."

  3. 'The way we played was not good enough'published at 17:59 British Summer Time 16 April 2022

    FT: Man Utd 3-2 Norwich

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick: "It was vital. The 2-0 lead should have made life easier but we didn't defend well. David de Gea kept us in the game.

"It was highly important we won the goal but the way we played was not good enough. It is a question of intensity and physicality.

"Like against Tottenham, Ronaldo was very crucial. They weren't easy goals, it was just outstanding. It doesn't make sense to be interested in the other results, we have to take care of our own results."

(On Man Utd fans criticising Paul Pogba): "I didn't hear it myself but I was informed after the game. I can fully understand the fans are frustrated, so are we, but I don't think they should take on individual players. I don't think that is right or correct."

Cristiano Ronaldo scored the 60th hat-trick of his professional career for club and country (50th at club level), with today’s direct free-kick goal the 58th of his career.

Ronaldo has scored 20+ goals in all competitions in each of his last 16 seasons at club level, in a run starting back in 2006-07 with Manchester United.

  5. 'Forster was incredible'published at 17:56 British Summer Time 16 April 2022

    FT: Southampton 1-0 Arsenal

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It’s a really difficult one to take. The way we controlled the game makes it difficult to understand how we lost the game.

"We didn’t hit the target many times and the end product was not as good as it can be. We conceded a very sloppy goal from a set-piece. When you have the amount of situations we created, you need to score three or four.

"The way we defended for the goal wasn’t good enough. You saw how the team tried. More than ever now, I want to be close to them.

"Forster was incredible, the saves that he made today. It was a defining moment. That’s why I say the box has decided the game today. You could see the game was one-way traffic."

On Arsenal's form: "It’s a real worry. We’ve lost games in different ways. To lose the way we did today is difficult to explain. If you saw the game, you’d say Arsenal had won comfortably.

"We performed but didn’t get a result. We need both. You have to put the ball in the net. You have to make the decisive moments count to win football matches and at the moment we’re not doing that."

  6. 'A very important three pointspublished at 17:53 British Summer Time 16 April 2022

    FT: Southampton 1-0 Arsenal

    Southampton

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Football is sometimes a strange game. I don’t think we played as well as in the first game against them but we lost that one 3-0.

"The goal was to get more stable. We had 26% possession. This is not normally the way we want to play, but when things aren’t going well you have to change things.

"We had good moments, but the most important is the clean sheet after six or seven games. We’ve played much better games, especially with the ball, but today the target was a different one.

"We have six games left and an important three points today. If you want to end up in the top ten you need to win games, and today was a very important one."

On Fraser Forster's performance: "It wasn’t so sure he could play today. He had a problem with his ankle. We needed a goalkeeper like him in such a game today."

  7. 'Doing what we are doing is remarkable'published at 17:50 British Summer Time 16 April 2022

    FT: Watford 1-2 Brentford

    Brentford

Brentford boss Thomas Frank, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Crazy, crazy finish. It was the third time we've won in the last minute; that is a credit to the boys and their character. Through the game, we gave very little away. First half, we were slightly better, second half, Watford were better than us, no doubt. Then you thin, 'okay, take a point. If you can't win, don't lose'.

"I am very pleased with [Christian] Norgaard; he is a key player but adding goals is fantastic. Pontus [Jansson[ has been very dangerous, big determination, very disciplined. I'm very happy he got this goal."

On Christian Eriksen: "The main thing is our key players are fit, then you add extreme quality and that helps."

On possible top half finish: "The supporters were amazing. Being in this position is remarkable. We came up through the playoffs, lowest budget, 'bus stop in Hounslow', all that. But doing what we are doing is fantastic."

  8. ouch!

Home discomfortpublished at 17:50 British Summer Time 16 April 2022

    FT: Watford 1-2 Brentford

Watford equal the top flight record of 10 successive home defeats, set by Birmingham City from October 1985 to February 1986 and matched by Sunderland from January 2003 to August 2005.

Watford also set a new club record by losing 10 successive league home matches. They lost nine in a row in the second tier between December 1971 and March 1972.

  9. 'It was a harsh blow we didn't deserve'published at 17:50 British Summer Time 16 April 2022

    FT: Watford 1-2 Brentford

    Watford

Watford boss Roy Hodgson, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Someone up there doesn't like us. Our first half performance was nowhere near good enough, we conceded a very poor goal so that was very disappointing considering how much we built the game up with the players during the week. They recognised the game needed to be built up because it was one of the last chance games we'd have.

"In the second half we did more than well enough, 1-0 down of course. But we got ourselves back in and I thought at least we looked good value or a 1-1. To lose to a free-kick in the 95th minute seemed to be a harsh judgement on the team.

"We haven't been lucky, but that doesn't alter the fact we haven't been good enough either. Today we should have been congratulating ourselves, if that is the right word, on a 1-1 draw. I didn't think we deserved to be contemplating another home defeat; taking the second half, that is probably the best we've offered our home fans. That doesn't say much.

"Any joy I've had over that performance has been snatched from me. There are 18 points left to play for, we've got no choice but to keep fighting. If we take all 18, we might well survive."

Another bad day for the Premier League's bottom two, with both falling to narrow losses. It just underlines the assertion from some that they are doomed to the drop.

They have now both played 32 games, which is two more than both Burnley and Everton above them, with Watford six points from safety and Norwich seven.

It looks like it is all on whether Burnley's decision to bin Sean Dyche pays off?

  11. 'We helped Ronaldo'published at 17:43 British Summer Time 16 April 2022

    FT: Man Utd 3-2 Norwich

    Norwich City

Norwich City boss Dean Smith, speaking to MOTD: "I was disappointed in the first half to go in having conceded two. The manner of the goals we conceded was really poor. We're really disappointed with that.

"I'm disappointed we haven't got anything from the match. We had the chance after three minutes when Teemu Pukki went through. We started the second half really well by getting it back to 2-2 and David de Gea pulling off the save to keep it 2-2.

"Ronaldo will get the plaudits with his hat-trick and rightly so but we helped him. We know we can do a lot better against him.

"The players are fighting and we'll continue fighting. I thought we showed our spirit. That is all we can do."

  12. Take that, 'big six'published at 17:41 British Summer Time 16 April 2022

    FT: Man Utd 3-2 Norwich

Since the beginning of 2019/20, only three players have scored a Premier League goal against all of the "big six" clubs of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City, Man United and Spurs:

Teemu Pukki, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Wilfried Zaha (Pukki was playing in the Championship for the entire 2020/21 campaign).

  13. 'Everyone is dropping points'published at 17:37 British Summer Time 16 April 2022

    FT: Man Utd 3-2 Norwich

    Manchester United

Manchester United keeper David de Gea, speaking to MOTD: "We know we are not at our best moment. The most important thing is the victory and we are closer to the top four.

"The spirit is there. Everyone is dropping points ups and won so we have a chance. It's not enough to be in the top four. We should control the game from the beginning and not give them chances. We give chances to every team so we have to improve a lot.

"We take the three points and let's see on Tuesday [away to Liverpool]. I hope this victory gives us more confidence. We want to go there and try and win.

"Cristiano Ronaldo is a top player, he always tries to score goals and tries to be there for the team."

  14. 'We are fighting to stay up'published at 17:35 British Summer Time 16 April 2022

    FT: Man Utd 3-2 Norwich

    Norwich City

Norwich boss Dean Smith: "It was a good performance but we can't give goals like that away. Inidividual errors and two set pieces, and we could have done better with our chances. Nobody can question our spirit.

"Ronaldo is the difference but we have handed him the first two on a plate and Tim should have saved the third.

"I expected us to go on and win it after the equaliser, so it is a tough one to take. We are showing we are fighting to stay up."

  15. 'A goalkeeper's dream'published at 17:27 British Summer Time 16 April 2022

    FT: Southampton 1-0 Arsenal

    Southampton

Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster: "It feels fantastic. It was a great reaction. Obviously last week was hard [against Chelsea]. There has been a lot of soul searching during the week, but it shows the desire of the squad.

"The lads were keen to show a reaction and work hard during the week, and that hard work has paid off.

"There were some nice saves in there. It’s always nice to contribute and keep a clean sheet. It’s a goalkeeper’s dream, really.

"Ideally we’d like to finish in the top half. If we want to do that we’ve got some work to do. We’re hoping for a strong finish between now and the end of the season.

"I’m just working as hard as ever, trying to keep improving my game and see where that takes me."

    FA Cup

We're all about the Premier League over here, but it would be remiss of me not to mention that the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Manchester City has just finished.

It has ended 3-2 to the Reds and you can get all the best reaction by heading here.

  17. 'We will fight for top four'published at 17:20 British Summer Time 16 April 2022

    FT: Man Utd 3-2 Norwich

    Manchester United

Man Utd goalkeeper David de Gea: "Ronaldo has scored three very important goals for us. We know we aren't playing very well but we got three points. We should control the game more against Norwich at home.

"A massive win for us. We still have a chance to finish top four and we have to fight for it.

"We will fight for the top four until the last second."

    FT: Man Utd 3-2 Norwich

    Norwich City

Norwich City's Kieran Dowell: "We showed a lot of spirit that will give us confidence going into our next game.

"We were a bit down towards the end of the first half so the goal on the stroke of half-time gave us confidence.

"Cristiano Ronaldo proved difference because he scored the winning goal, but we missed some chances at the other end."

  20. Out of form at the worst timepublished at 17:00 British Summer Time 16 April 2022

    FT: Southampton 1-0 Arsenal

The last time the Gunners lost three league games in a row was the trio of games that began this season.

They have now lost four of their last five Premier League matches (W1-D0-L4), directly following a run of one defeat in 11 league games (W9-D1-L1).
