Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said he would watch last night's game between Liverpool and Manchester United 'as a fan' and he hoped the visitors got a positive result.

Deep down, he must have known it was unlikely and his side would go into the game against Brighton needing a win to go back to the top of the Premier League.

His message in his programme notes is quite simple.

"I want them (players) to continue doing all the things that have made us so successful over the last five years," he said.

"We have our way of preparing and playing and we should stick to it. If we do that, I think we can have a successful end to the season."

Liverpool's emphatic victory over Manchester United last night saw them replace Manchester City as the Premier League leaders, but City can reclaim top spot with three points tonight.

United's defeat leaves Arsenal as Tottenham's main challengers in the race for fourth, with the Gunners able to go level on points with their north London rivals should they beat Chelsea.

Chelsea, for now, appear relatively comfortable in third place.
