  1. Goodbye for now

Goodnight, that's the end of day one of the World Cup. See highlights of Ecuador's win over Qatar below.

Read about the opening ceremony here.

Tomorrow the first game is England v Iran at 13:00 GMT. See you then?

So who do the BBC pundits think are going to win the tournament? This was filmed before today's game but I can't imagine any of their opinions have changed based on Ecuador's win over Qatar.

  3. Post update

    FT: Qatar 0-2 Ecuador

Ecuador's opener was the first time in World Cup history that the opening goal at a single edition of the tournament was scored from the penalty spot.

If Enner Valencia's first goal hadn't been disallowed, that would have been the quickest World Cup goal in an opener.

  4. Post update

    FT: Qatar 0-2 Ecuador

There were just 11 shots in this game - five for Qatar and six for Ecuador.

No World Cup game on record had fewer shots, going back to 1966.

  5. Post update

    FT: Qatar 0-2 Ecuador

    Ashley Williams

Former Wales captain on BBC One

Qatar couldn't build anything, Ecuador were set with the press. It was like a training exercise second half.

They were professional and got the job done.

  6. Post update

    FT: Qatar 0-2 Ecuador

Qatar had zero attempts on target in the game.

In 2018 only four teams finished a game without any efforts on target - including Saudi Arabia in the opening game, which hosts Russia won 5-0.

  7. Post update

    FT: Qatar 0-2 Ecuador

    Alex Scott

Former England and Arsenal defender on BBC One

The disappointing thing with Qatar was, even when they got some possession, they were so sloppy with it. They gave it away.

It could be a long group stage for them.

  8. Post update

    FT: Qatar 0-2 Ecuador

Ecuador scored twice in the first half of a World Cup match for the first time.

This is the second time in their four appearances at the World Cup they have won their opening match, with the other 2-0 against Poland in 2006.

  9. Post update

    FT: Qatar 0-2 Ecuador

Ecuador have kept a clean sheet in each of their last seven matches (W3 D4), with Argentina's Julian Alvarez the last player to score against them back in March.

  10. Post update

    FT: Qatar 0-2 Ecuador

    Alan Shearer

Former England striker on BBC One

It was won in the first half, a poor second half.

Ecuador managed the game, kept the ball when they had to. It was flat in the second half, even the crowd disappeared after half-time.

  11. Post update

Brazil and Argentina are clear favourites to win the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

According to research by Oddspedia, the Selecao are the front runners at the bookmakers, currently priced at 4-1.

That’s just slightly ahead of rivals Argentina, who follow closely in behind as second favourites at 11-2 next best.

The next eight most likely challengers according to the bookies are all European, with France (6-1), Spain (7-1) and England (9-1) next. They are followed by Germany (12-1), the Netherlands (14-1) and Portugal (18-1) follow next in the betting market, then comes Belgium (20-1).

Qatar - not on the list surprisingly...

  12. Post update

    FT: Qatar 0-2 Ecuador

Enner Valencia is now Ecuador's highest ever goalscorer at the World Cup, netting his fourth and fifth goals in the competition.

He has netted all their five goals in the 2014 and 2022 World Cups. That makes him the first player to score five consecutive World Cup goals for a South American nation.

  13. Valencia scores double as hosts lose opening game

    FT: Qatar 0-2 Ecuador

Watch highlights as Qatar become the first host nation to lose their opening game as Ecuador captain Enner Valencia scores twice to give his side a comfortable 2-0 victory in the opening game of the Fifa World Cup in Qatar.

  14. Post update

    FT: Qatar 0-2 Ecuador

Gary Lineker says Qatar's Almoez Ali is an early contender for the 'rolling boot' after doing four and a half rolls after a tackle during that game. He even reckons he beat Neymar's tally from 2018.

  15. Post update

    FT: Qatar 0-2 Ecuador

    Pat Nevin

Former Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's the very least that Ecuador should get out of that game. They managed it very well in the second half. There were moments when they took their foot off too much but when you look at the quality teams in the tournament, I think Qatar could get run off the park and passed off the park, but we shall see.

  16. Post update

    FT: Qatar 0-2 Ecuador

A comfortable evening for the Ecuador defence - Qatar (attacking from left to right) managed just two touches inside the opposition penalty area throughout the whole game.

  17. Post update

    FT: Qatar 0-2 Ecuador

Senegal play the Netherlands in the group's other game tomorrow - at 16:00 GMT.

I believe Senegal are the last World Cup debutants to win the opening game of the tournament, against France in 2002.

  18. FULL-TIME

    Qatar 0-2 Ecuador

It's all over. Qatar become the first World Cup hosts to ever lose their opening game.

Enner Valencia's double in the first half sealed victory for Ecuador.

  19. Post update

    Qatar 0-2 Ecuador

    Dion Dublin

Former England striker on BBC One

The quality from Ecuador has been a lot better today.

Qatar have got to do a lot more to get points from this competition.
