Marcus Rashford clearly has something to prove.
He drives forward down the right, flicks the ball past one man, dinks his way past another and then sees his shot blocked.

I just want to see England keep everyone healthy and fit. Don't dwell on the ball too much and allow a tired, lazy challenge come in and cause an injury.

Southgate will have been putting in a lot of work leading up to this tournament but he won't have had time with the squad. Just over a week after the Premier League finished to get his players together.
But it feels like a new look, with the three in midfield and the way that functions.
England 5-1 Iran
Not a bad finish this!
England 5-1 Iran
There were plenty of people - me included - who were concerned this would be a familiar England under Gareth Southgate. Pragmatic, cautious, a bit dull. Nothing of the sort today. This has been bright, enterprising, attack-minded. The three in midfield a lovely mix of grit and guile to supply a really dangerous front three. Long may it continue.

Harry Kane has been superb today. England look so much better when they aren't just relying on him to score. He's dropped back and pulled the strings, taken defenders out of position and has created so much space. Saka man of the match but Kane not far away!

If you could have written a script for this game, goals for Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford would have been very much in it.
So good to see the pair with broad smiles on their faces after the misery of the finale to Euro 2020.

England have scored five or more goals in a major tournament match (World Cup/Euros) for only the second time in their history.
The 6-1 win over Panama in 2018 was the first.

It was a good start to the tournament from the England captain, from a performance point of view. He will probably be angry not to get a goal but he provided a lovely assist for the Sterling goal. An all round good display from the England number nine.

Not this time for Mehdi Taremi!
He is released down the right side, just inside the box, but slices his first-time shot well wide.
That is the cue for Sardar Azmoun to join the action for Iran.

A change a piece.
England's skipper, Harry Kane, gets a rest as Callum Wilson comes on.

Credit to Iran for showing some attacking ambition particularly in this second half.
But the Opta shot map from the game displays England's dominance - and also their accuracy.

As a manager, you know you're getting it spot on when a man you've just brought on scores a minute later. Take a bow, Gareth.

Right on the money. I said Rashford had a lot to live up to because Saka has been electric. He just chopped inside and finished it.
That would have felt good for Marcus Rashford. There were question marks about whether he would even be in the squad. It's good to involve other players and get confidence into the squad, not just the starting eleven.
He's had a really good start to the season for Manchester United that warrants his England place.

Saka won't be getting a hat-trick, but here is his superb second...

A dream start for Marcus Rashford. First touch driving into the box, you think he is going to hit it with his right foot but he steps inside with such composure and he makes the finish look simple.
Marcus Rashford
Three touches!
The first controls the ball, the second is a neat flick inside a bamboozled defender, the third is a cool finish.
Marcus Rashford wasn't a certain pick for this squad. he now has his first major tournament goal. How long was he on? A minute?

England are a mess and needed to get Eric Dier on the pitch. Bellingham had done the right thing and dropped into the defence but no one dropped into the midfield to fill the gap.

I'm at the Brazil news conference in Doha which has the England-Iran game on.
At 4-0, I turned round to one of the journalists here and asked, "Are you guys scared now watching this?"
His reply? "Mate, come on. Please. It's Iran. Watch how we go against Serbia on Thursday then we can talk."
He came in for some more when Mehdi Taremi pulled one back for Iran.
"Ey, Hafez, who's scared now eh?!"
