England march on to a last-16 meeting with Senegal after pouring yet more fuel on the ever-glowing embers of hope.

England have finished top of their World Cup group for the first time since 2006, when they were eventually eliminated by Portugal at the quarter-final stage.

That was the penalty shoot-out loss. The one when England missed three of the four they took after a 0-0 draw.

You remember... Wayne Rooney got sent off and Cristiano Ronaldo winked.

England have qualified for the knockout phase of the World Cup 12 times in 16 appearances. They only failed to do so in 1950, 1958, 1982 and 2014.

England manager Gareth Southgate talking at his press conference: "We had complete control of the game in the first half but didn't create enough clear chances. We were a little bit out of balance and we thought we could reverse Marcus and Phil's sides. Players make those decisions work.

"Watching lots of games the big players have stepped up. And our forwards didn't do that in the first half but in the second half they really did.

"You need goals from all areas. It is a problem for opposition if the threat is coming from other areas of the pitch. It is competition for places and people have to deliver.

"You can see with his [Marcus Rashford's] club there have been happiness in his performances. We have a different version completely to the player we had in the Euros last summer."

Robert Page talking to the post match news conference: "I don't think this is the last time you will see Gareth Bale in a Wales jersey."

Wales forward Gareth Bale: "It was tough game against a very good team. We are disappointed in the result but we have to realise we’ve come a long way to get here. We need to be proud of ourselves that we got here. It’s been a long time.

"We’ve given everything and we’ll all walk out of that changing room with our heads held high and proud of what we’ve achieved.

"We are bitterly disappointed, we would love to have done better but the reality is, football is difficult. We have to learn from these experiences and look forward.

"We are in a good spot, we’ve qualified for three of the last four tournaments and we’ve gained invaluable experience, whether we do well in them for not.

"You can always learn and progress. We’ll learn, we’ll regroup. We’ll go again in March for the European qualifiers."

Can you pick yourselves up? “It won’t be difficult. The one thing this group does is bounce back very well and the characters in that dressing room are amazing. The togetherness is incredible. We’d love to have done better but we’ll go again in march looking to qualify for another major tournament.

"The fans have been incredible – the fans who are here, the ones at home, we give 100% we’d love to have gone further but we’ve given everything and I think the fans know that. They need to stick with us when we go again in march. We look forward to playing again."

Of all the players to have started three games at the 2022 World Cup so far, only Almoez Ali (71) has had fewer touches of the ball than Wales' Gareth Bale (77), who made just seven in the first half against England tonight before being substituted.

Gareth Bale speaking on BBC One: "Everyone is disappointed, but we are proud of what we achieved to get here. We have to look at how far we have come, but football is difficult - teams go through bad runs, we did not live up to our expectations.

"If you'd said we would be at a World Cup two years ago, we would have pinched ourselves.

"We're frustrated we would have loved to have played better, but it didn't happen for us at this tournament. At the last two Euros we got out the group, the expectation was for us to continue that, but football doesn't work like that.

"I'll keep going for as long as I can and as long as I'm wanted. We have a qualifying campaign starting in March, we go again."

Estella Joyce: Jude Bellingham speaks with a maturity that belies his age . Very impressive.

Kenneth MacRea: Fine game from young Bellingham. With him, Foden and Rashford they have a chance to go deep in this World Cup.

Jude Bellingham became the second-youngest player (19 years, 153 days) to earn 20 caps for England, behind only Wayne Rooney (19 years, 24 days).

His 20th cap was yet another sparkling midfield display. He's big, he's strong, he has a foot like a pillow and he can run all day long.

Seems like a lovely kid too.

Jude Bellingham speaking on BBC One: "I think what you saw in the first game was an attacking display, the second was defensive, this was a mix. It was good to tie them up today.

On Rashford: "The free kick, in a game like this there is big pressure, the way he delivered was brilliant."

On England's attack: "We've got loads of attacking depth, whoever comes on makes an impact. The changes don't change the style of the team. I'm really pleased for Phil [Foden], given the attention on the last few days."

You would have got good money on England scoring nine goals in the group stages and Harry Kane not bagging at least one of them.

However, his assist game is top notch. Kane became the first England player to provide as many as three assists in a single edition of the World Cup since David Beckham in 2002.

Wales manager Rob Page, speaking to BBC One: "It's very tough at this moment in time.

"I thought we were outstanding in the first half, I really did. The effort they put in without the ball was exceptional. We addressed it at half time and said we could've been a little bit better but I won't hear a bad word said about those players - they have given it everything today.

"The first goal was a wonderful strike, the second one disappointed me a little bit but I don't want to talk about negatives today. The boys have put a shift in.

"We disappointed to be leaving the tournament but if you're going to go out, that's the way, that first half performance again, was excellent.

"My message is don't be disappointed. We've got to build for the future now. We got to a World Cup and that was an unbelievable achievement for that group of players."

On Gareth Bale substitution: "He tried to get to half time but unfortunately, he felt his hamstring. Look at Joe Allen, first 90 minutes for ages and he's thrown everything at it. Ben Davies had to come off through injury. It was a massive effort from the group and I'm so proud of them."

England's nine goals so far at the 2022 World Cup is the most they've scored in the group stages at a single edition of a major tournament (World Cup and Euros).

Tonight they attempted 18 shots in the game - their highest total in a single match in the 2022 World Cup.

Marcus Rashford is voted your star player as England seal top spot in Group B with a 3-0 win over Wales at the 2022 World Cup.

Dan James speaking on BBC One: "We always knew it would be tough. I thought we defended well at times but they can score with anything. Conceding early [in the second half] killed us.

"Against these top teams to concede one is difficult, but two in five minutes, it is very hard to come back. The game left us after that. We have to look at ourselves - we are super proud to be here, we concentrate on qualifying for the next Euros now.

"I want to thank all the fans who came out here, you have been fantastic."

You don't need to tell a player or a manager. The know they haven't performed in the three games, especially in the first two which were definitely winnable.

I think we have got a bit lost on how we want to play.

For me now it's about how we go again, whether we go with big names again, if not how do we replace them?

How they go forward is going to be really interesting. Rob Page has a lot of thinking to do and I am sure he will make the right decisions.
