Next Sunday, Spurs just need a point at Norwich to reach the Champions League.

Arsenal need to beat Everton at home and hope relegated Norwich can stun Spurs.

I'm presuming Arsenal don't win by 15 or 16 goals of course...

  4. 'Best performance since my arrival'published at 22:44 British Summer Time 16 May 2022

    Newcastle 2-0 Arsenal

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe to BBC Sport: "Big turnaround from that game [defeat at Arsenal in his first game in the dugout]. That was a really frustrating day. We left the stadium that day in a difficult moment. We knew we had a massive second half of the season. Luckily the players responded brilliantly to the challenge.

"This was the best performance since my arrival.

"The motivation was personal pride and performing in front of our supporters and leaving on a good note into the summer.

"We were very aggressive, good physically. It's not an easy game, Arsenal are top quality. Credit to the players.

"We knew this was something we hadn't achieved - getting something against the top six. In the future we'll have to compete against these teams. We have to have confidence we can win anywhere. This will help us today.

"A whole host of things have helped us turn the results around - unity, team spirit and January definitely helped with quality players coming in.

"The mentality of the group, they were determined not to get relegated.

"The hardest thing for me this summer is to keep that [group spirit] intact while changing the dynamic of the group.

"There's a massive connection between us and the fans. The minimum we can give them is 100% effort every time we play. That's what they want to see. I think we've delivered that in the main."

  5. 'We're a massive club with big amitions'published at 22:38 British Summer Time 16 May 2022

    Newcastle 2-0 Arsenal

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was a brilliant all-round performance. We played with intensity and never let up. We approached the game in a brilliant manner and we did the Premier League proud tonight.

"The one thing missing from us was that we hadn't beaten a top-six team - and we deservedly beat them.

"We wanted to press Arsenal and not let them settle into a rhythm but also for the first time in recent performances we saw a team that could have the ball comfortably and be creative.

"Arsenal competed well and fought well but they left spaces for us and we exploited them.

"Callum Wilson worked incredibly hard to get back to full fitness. He deserves all the accolades tonight.

"It's been a brilliant thing to be part of [Newcastle's form over the second half of the season]. We've done it through team spirit and unity. We'll remain very calm in this moment because it's a brilliant win but that's all it is. We have to work to improve in the summer. We're a massive club with big ambitions but my job is to focus on how we do it rather than talk."

  6. 'We're not playing tennis'published at 22:34 British Summer Time 16 May 2022

    Newcastle 2-0 Arsenal

    Arsenal

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka to BBC Sport: "We wanted to have a big game but it didn't happen.

"It's so difficult to find the right words. If you don't listen to the coach and do your own stuff, it doesn't work.

"People speak always about leaders. We're not playing tennis, we're playing football. If someone is not ready for this pressure, stay at home. You can't come here and play like this. We looked very bad today. The game plan was totally different. We played a totally different game.

"They were running us over from the first minute to the 96th. When you play like this you don't deserve to play in the Champions League.

"The thing is the pressure. If you can't handle the pressure, it ends like today. It looks like we can't do something against the pressure."

On the final day: "If Tottenham lose and we win, you never know in football. We have to hope. Before the game everything was in our hands. It's a totally different game now. If you have to hope in football and in life it's different."

    Newcastle 2-0 Arsenal

    Newcastle United

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson, speaking to BBC Sport: "We took the game to Arsenal and deservedly got the three points.

"Everybody wrote us off at Christmas and it was about proving people wrong. Now it's about not resting on our laurels. The boys are putting their bodies on the line - I've had a tooth knocked out and a split lip. It's like a war out there.

"The manager has stabilised us. He's brought in some great players and instilled a style of play and philosophy at the club. Why not cause upsets higher up the league and take the game to Arsenal?"

  8. 'We didn't deserve to be on the pitch'published at 22:28 British Summer Time 16 May 2022

    Newcastle 2-0 Arsenal

    Arsenal

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka to Sky Sports: "It's difficult to find the right words. From the first minute to the 90th we didn't deserve to be on the pitch.

"I can't explain to you why. We didn't do what the game plan was, not listening to the coach. What happened was a disaster performance. You don't deserve to play Champions League or even Europa League. It's very hard to take it at the moment.

"I don't know why we're not doing what the coach is asking for us."

Asked if inexperience in the squad was an issue: "If someone isn't ready for this game, stay at home. It doesn't matter your age. If you're nervous, stay on the bench or stay at home. You need people to have the balls to come here and play. It's one of the most important games for us. We're feeling very disappointed for the people who came over here.

"Sorry to them [fans], I don't have any other words.

"The dressing room is very quiet. The game plan was totally different to what we did over 90 minutes.

"We are waiting for six years. We had everything in our hands. We looked like we were in the position where Newcastle are and they were where we are."

    Newcastle United

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was an unbelievable atmosphere. Early on in the season everyone wrote us off and we were relegated by Christmas time. But we've dug deep and proved everybody wrong.

"I've noticed a difference [coming back into the team]. I'm getting a lot more chances and we're keeping the ball better.

"I watched Arsenal the other night and I knew their centre-backs had injury problems. As a striker I was licking my lips.

"I've worked so hard [to get back to fitness]. When you're out injured you want to come back and make a difference."

    Newcastle 2-0 Arsenal

    Arsenal

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta to BBC Sport: "Incredibly disappointed. The way we started to the finish, Newcastle were better. They deserved to win by a mile. It's a really difficult one to accept.

"We have to cope with those nights [including the defeat by Spurs] and we didn't cope with those nights.

"We haven't been able to deal with situations throughout the season. The squad suffered a lot with injuries but that can't be an excuse.

"Newcastle were 100 times better than us.

"The way we competed today [was disappointing].

"In every department you have to earn the right to play and we didn't do it.

"We have to put our head down and accept the performance was nowhere near the standard required for the Champions League.

"From tomorrow we'll prepare for Everton. It's still mathematically possible."

  13. 'Nowhere near Champions League level'published at 22:19 British Summer Time 16 May 2022

    Newcastle 2-0 Arsenal

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, speaking to Sky Sports: "Newcastle deserved to win the match and were much better than us. We had nothing in the game. They were much better in every department and we were poor with the ball. A lot of things happened during the game, like substitutions for injuries, but it's not an excuse because they were much better than us.

"It's true that we could not cope with the game that we had to play here. We tried to change some things but it didn't make it better. We had moments where we looked better but then the execution was so poor and the goals we gave away were extremely poor.

"It's extremely disappointing that Newcastle were 10 times better than us and the performane was nowhere near the level we need to be at if we want to play in the Champions League.

"I am incredibly disappointed. It's a very painful one. It was in our hands and today it's not in our hands. We have to beat Everton and wait for Norwich to beat Spurs. There's always a tiny chance in football."

Real Madrid are confident Kylian Mbappe will announce his decision to join them from Paris St-Germain within the next fortnight.

The 23-year-old's contract expires this summer and BBC Sport reported in April he had agreed terms with Real Madrid.

PSG were prepared to offer the forward a 150m euros signing-on fee to keep him at the club for another two seasons.

But the La Liga champions expect him to make his decision public shortly.

I thought Newcastle were brilliant. They suffered in the first couple of minutes but from then on they dominated the game. An outstanding performance and what a way to send the Newcastle fans home at the end of the season.

Callum Wilson gives them options, he creates space and he makes life difficult for defenders, plus he has blistering pace.

Yet again, Arsenal have bottled it at the business end of things. It's so painful to watch as a lifelong Arsenal fan. The club needs a major overhaul, instead of papering over the cracks. Bitterly disappointed.

Let this be a lesson to clubs thinking they can recapture past glory by hiring rookie managers. Lampard at Everton and Arteta at Arsenal are poor managers full stop.
