Denmark manager Kasper Hjulmand said their "dream was to win something" but admitted they are "not favourites" at the World Cup in Qatar.

Their best performance was in 1998, when they reached the quarter finals.

Denmark are in Group D with holders France, Australia and Tunisia, who they take on in their first match today.

Hjulmand said: "This group of players have the quality to win everything. Are we the favourites? No."

He added: "But we can beat everyone on the day and we have a very strong self-confidence. The best way of winning everything is to dream big and go into a tournament to win it.

"We have a good feeling. We are in a good position and ready to attack. I think we still have a gap to close on the best nations, but does that mean we cannot beat them on the day? No."

Denmark have strength in depth in pretty much every area. They did well without Christian Eriksen, even when he was out of the side.

They have got power and strength at the back. They are solid in midfield, they are used to each other. They don't have loads of goals at the top of the pitch, but there are players who can bring goals from further back.

They are a good team, they've got good depth and they've got brilliant team spirit and that could be a huge thing.

Captain Wahbi Khazri believes Tunisia have the quality to make it sixth time lucky at the World Cup in Qatar.

The North Africans have suffered group exits in all five of their previous appearances and boast just two wins from 15 games - the first against Mexico in 1978 and then against Panama in 2018.

Once again aiming to reach the knockout stages for the first time, Khazri is keen to start well against Denmark and Australia given their final Group D match comes against holders France.

"I believe we can make it out. We have a well-oiled team that has been together for a long time," Khazri told BBC Sport Africa.

"France are superior to us and are competing for the title, Denmark is a good team and Australia is as well. I think we have a chance to play in the next round and we will have to be efficient in the first two games.

"Before the last World Cup in Russia, we delivered solid performances against Spain and Portugal, then beat Croatia a year after they finished as runners-up.

"We are able to perform against big teams. It will be a dream fulfilled to reach the second round."

Football journalist Lars Sivertsen on BBC Radio 5 Live: "Christian Eriksen is such an important player. He makes life easier for other players on the pitch because he's so good at receiving the ball.

"He is almost always available for the pass and it just makes it a lot easier for his team-mates."

It was only in June 2021 when Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest when he collapsed in his country's Euro 2020 match against Finland.

His recovery from that incident to be able to play again is one of the most incredible stories in the football world.

The 30-year-old had an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) fitted, which can reset the heart after a cardiac arrest. He got his career back on track with a successful spell at Brentford before moving to Manchester United in the summer.

In his last game, the 2-1 Premier League win at Fulham, Eriksen scored his first goal for United.

After the incident, Danish team doctor Morten Boesen said: "He was gone. We did cardiac resuscitation, it was a cardiac arrest.

"How close were we to losing him? I don't know, but we got him back after one defib [defibrillation] so that's quite fast."

Tunisia's strength is at the back and Ellyes Skhiri, who sits in front of their defence, is a key man for them.

Denmark's main task will be to break them down, but I am expecting Eriksen to find a way through.

Former Sunderland winger and second on Tunisia's all-time top scorers' list Wahbi Khazri does not make the starting XI. Their threat instead will come from striker and captain Yousef Msakni who has 17 goals in 87 caps for his country.
