  1. 'France didn't start with the desired intensity'

    HT: France 2-1 Australia

    Chris Sutton

Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

A big surprise with Australia taking the lead. France didn't start with the desired intensity but then a couple of mistakes from the Australians allowed Adrien Rabiot to equalise before Olivier Giroud gave France the lead.

  2. France push forward

    HT: France 2-1 Australia

    France and Australia average positions

France have seized control of this game and nothing illustrates that more than the average position of left-back Theo Hernandez (22).

He replaced his brother Lucas (21) straight after Australia's opener and has been operating almost as a left winger for Les Blues.

Then there are the positions of Ousmane Dembele (11) and Kylian Mbappe (10). It feels like Australia are inviting trouble by letting those two creep in behind their full-backs.

  3. HALF-TIME

    France 2-1 Australia

The half-time whistle goes. France trailed 1-0 and now they lead 2-1. The opposite of the Australia v Saudi Arabia game.

  4. Post update

    France 2-1 Australia

Australia are ending the half well as Ibrahima Konate has to boot the ball out for a throw-in.

  5. 'Shows you chances are there for them'

    France 2-1 Australia

    Danny Murphy

Former England midfielder on BBC One

A whisker away, what a great run into the box from Jackson Irvine, a brilliant pull-back, he gets a great contact, tries to head it back the way it's come as you're always taught.

It just shows you, there are chances there for Australia.

  6. HITS THE WOODWORK

    France 2-1 Australia

Out of nowhere, Australia are almost level. Jackson Irvine meets a cross 16 yards out and heads the ball back in the direction it came. Hugo Lloris can't get there in time and is thankful to see the ball come off the post.

    Jackson Irvine heads towards goal
  7. 'It's a mind the windows moment'

    France 2-1 Australia

    Chris Sutton

Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

How has he missed that? A big smile on his face.

It's a clever run from Griezmann, who drifts out wide, feeds the ball with the outside of his left foot and it is beautiful for Kylian Mbappe and he cannot miss that. It is a mind-the-windows moment for him.

    France v Australia
  8. 'Waiting for net to bulge'

    France 2-1 Australia

    Danny Murphy

Former England midfielder on BBC One

I think the laugh and smile tell you how easy a chance it was.

What a lovely little pass from Griezmann and you are just waiting for the net to bulge.

I think it comes off the right side of Mbappe's shin.

  9. INJURY TIME

    France 2-1 Australia

Absolutely textbook 2022 World Cup amount of stoppage time - six minutes.

  10. Post update

    France 2-1 Australia

It should be 3-1. Antoine Griezmann runs in behind and chests down a long ball before squaring for Kylian Mbappe, who volleys over from eight yards out.

  11. Post update

    France 2-1 Australia

If Australia were good in the first part of this half, France have seized control and the Socceroos are in disarray.

They've pushed those possession statistics up to almost 65% and have made nearly four times as many passes in Australia's final third than their opponents have in French territory.

    Graham Arnold's side need half-time.

  12. Post update

    France 2-1 Australia

You know when they say there's a stat for everything now. Well...

  13. Post update

    France 2-1 Australia

Ousmane Dembele beats a defender (which claims he was fouled) and finds Kylian Mbappe who rolls the ball back to Antoine Griezmann but the Atletico man drags a shot wide from outside the box.

  14. Post update

    France 2-1 Australia

    Danny Murphy

Former England midfielder on BBC One

They had some joy, Australia, playing the long diagonal, three times in the first 15 minutes.

    But they've stopped doing it.

  16. Post update

    France 2-1 Australia

France are having fun now. Kylian Mbappe whizzes down the left and squares it for Ousmane Dembele, who is stretching and stabs a shot over.

  17. 'Wingers have to double up'

    France 2-1 Australia

    Danny Murphy

Former England midfielder on BBC One

If the full-backs are left one-on-one with these two France wingers, with their pace and skill, they are going to be in for a tough evening.

The [Australia] wingers have to double up - it's hard work but they have to do it.

Australia have to gather themselves, try and stay in it.

  18. Post update

    Here is France's equaliser.

  19. Je t'aime

    France 2-1 Australia

    Olivier Giroud

With that tap-in, Olivier Giroud becomes the oldest goalscorer (36y 53d) for a European nation at the World Cup (excluding own goals) since Georges Bregy for Switzerland v USA in 1994 (36y 152d).

He's only touched the ball six times so far in this first half.

  20. France in control

    France 2-1 Australia

    Phil McNulty

BBC Sport chief football writer at Al Janoub Stadium

France gathered their composure swiftly after going behind and that second goal was sheer quality involving Kylian Mbappe, Adrien Rabiot and then finished off by Olivier Giroud.

The early fizz has gone out of Australia and France are showing their authority.
