Belgium's players fell to the floor at full-time as their supporters behind the far goal politely applauded them off the pitch.

Romelu Lukaku, who replaced Dries Mertens at half-time, came into the game with intent and immediately brought additional energy to the Belgium side.

But his missed opportunities in the second half proved costly, with each one bringing an audible collective groan from the stands and Inter Milan striker punched the dugout in frustration after the final whistle.

Croatia were unconvincing - they had a penalty ruled out by VAR due to an offside in the build-up in the first half - but did enough to secure progression.

However they looked a level below what they showed to reach the final in Russia four years ago and their celebrations were fairly subdued after scraping through.

More from Herdman, on Canada leaving the tournament with three losses:

"I'm proud of what these lads have shown here. You're always going to walk away from this and it's going to sting.

"There isn't a game that we're not proud of. We competed in every match here. It's the first time we've been here in 36 years. There's a qualitative gap at all levels and we're trying to close that.

"We'll keep learning as an organisation and as a coach and player group. We've got four years to build and this is our first step into the big unknown. We've found a lot of things out, that this team has got quality, we can compete and we were close."

Here's what Canada head coach John Herdman had to say following his side's third straight defeat, speaking to BBC Two:

"We were two inches away for scoring the first points for Canada. Everyone thought that ball was going to cross the line. We were willing it but it doesn't happen. You've seen that resilience, you've seen our quality.

"This is a Moroccan team that have just won the group. I thought we showed that spirit, that Canadian grit that we came here to show. and our quality at times."

Belgium manager Roberto Martinez, speaking on BBC One: "It's not easy to win games in the World Cup. We weren't ourselves in first game we had a deserved defeat in second game. Today we were ready, we created opportunities and today there is no regrets. We're out but we can leave with our heads held high.

"You see Youri Tielemans and other young players - the golden generation is doing something that is bringing the next generation on. It's not what names are on the pitch the legacy can be left in many ways."

Not good enough for Belgium? "No, we wanted to get through but I'm sure the other national teams wanted to get through and that's the tournament. In the previous World Cup we won three games in the group stage, we wanted to go all the way."

On future as Belgium coach: "Now is not the moment."

Four years after no African team made it through the group stages in Russia, will we have four through in Qatar?

Sofyan Amrabat was excellent, he was superb. He was disciplined and put fires out which was really important. as ac entre back, it's so nice when you have a centre back who can put out fires like that in front of you and who you trust.

Successful teams need to know be able to know how to manage games, win games, keep clean sheets but you need someone like that as well.

Someone that is going to do the dirty work but gets overlooked. If he wasn't there today, maybe Canada get something out of the game. That type of holding midfield player who can sniff danger is so important.
