Fans of 'Les Lions de la Téranga' were pouring in two hours before kick-off.

They were full of colour, dance and music. Since they took their seats, they have been dancing away in unison in one corner of the stadium.

If you're playing for Senegal and you're playing chasing Saka and Foden and you've got to be on your mettle for 60-70 minutes and then Rashford comes on you then you think oh boy, right, this is a completely different challenge.

The full backs, Sabaly and Jakobs, were really impressive against Ecuador on the ball and off the ball.

It's not a given that we're going to create loads of chances. I think the retention of possession will be key because patience will be key in there as well.

We can't second guess a Southgate team but he still only has 11 players to start with Let's just go with it and hopefully be jumping around after we win Come onnnnnnn

Fred from Manchester (no not that one)

The fact people are arguing vociferously about which top class attacking player Southgate ought to pick is a superb problem to have. Rashford had a superb game against Wales, granted, but Saka and Foden have both also been brilliant this tournament. Southgate can't please all the people all the time; he's the one who sees them training daily, he knows better than anyone

Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham were a little bit disjointed against USA. Those two and Mason Mount didn't really stay as a group. They've got to play more as a three. It was a little bit of a lesson for us.

We need to play a little bit more football. We played into the USA's hands. That won't be something that happens again because Southgate will learn. It is about getting the right blend.

I would like to see Bellingham demand the ball and play. I didn't see that from France's Aurelien Tchouameni, who plays for Real Madrid - he should be running the show when they made changes against Tunisia. I am seeing that from Bellingham.

World Cup 2022: Phil Foden on being himself, squad competition and taking his chances

England forward Phil Foden says his World Cup has been a "mixed bag" but believes he has a chance of starting England's last-16 clash with Senegal.

Foden scored in England's 3-0 Group B win against Wales, having missed his side's goalless draw with the USA.

"It has been up and down," the Manchester City forward told BBC TV.

"[I am] disappointed not to start more games but it is part of the tournament. I am a team player and when I get the opportunities I'll take them."

Foden has scored nine goals and assisted twice in 22 appearances for his club and country this season.

He came on as a 71st-minute substitute in England's opener with Iran and played all 90 minutes against Wales.

Stephen: It couldn't possibly be viewed as positive that we have the likes of Saka to start and Rashford to bring on later or vice versa, could it? Too many England fans complain whatever happens. How about just supporting the 11 starters?

Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

If you look at form this season, Trippier has been fantastic, he is on top form. But if you really strip it down and ask me who I would play if it was a World Cup final, I would play Walker just because I can trust him a little bit more defensively. But I do think Trippier has been hard done by.

Gareth Southgate makes just one change to the England side who beat Wales in their final group match.

Bukayo Saka comes in for Marcus Rashford, with Raheem Sterling not available due to family reasons.

England XI: Pickford, Walker, Shaw, Rice, Stones, Maguire, Henderson, Kane, Saka, Foden, Bellingham.

There is also just one change to the Senegal side who beat Ecuador in their last match.

Everton's Idrissa Gueye is out through suspension so Krepin Diatta comes into midfield.

Chelsea's Edouard Mendy starts in goal, while centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly captains the side.

Senegal XI: E Mendy, Koulibaly, N Mendy, Dia, Ciss, Ndiaye, Jakobs, Diatta, Sarr, Sabaly, Diallo.

His selections have rarely been totally wrong and he's transformed England from arrogant, entitled, also-rans into a genuinely competitive world class team that are now thought of as serious contenders. Haters, please take note.

But we've all seen Gareth Southgate's England for long enough now. How often has he been so bold and attacking with his XI?

Ben: Unpopular opinion: Rashford wasn't actually that good in the last game and dropping him for Saka is absolutely the right decision.

Aza: Been Arsenal's best and most consistent player for the past two years and has more goals and assists this year, while top of the league. I don't understand why people outside of Arsenal don't recognise how good Saka is. Probably England's only natural winger and one of the most gifted. He should be first on team sheet!

  16. Why fitness is as important as quality at this World Cuppublished at 17:42 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2022

    England v Senegal (19:00 GMT)

    Danny MurphyImage source, BBC Sport

It is becoming obvious that fitness and athleticism are becoming as much a factor in deciding matches at this World Cup as technical ability.

That is one of the main reasons we saw so many shocks in the group stage, although of course the teams who caused upsets also had a very good tactical plan.

For example, the physical output we saw from Japan when they beat Spain and Germany, Saudi Arabia when they beat Argentina, and also Morocco in their win over Belgium, helped them overcome teams who, on paper, had much better players.

You would normally expect to see the more technical side wear the opposition down by the end of games, with more spaces appearing when they tire late on.

In the Premier League, you see Manchester City do that all the time - they scored more goals in the last 15 minutes of matches than anyone else last season.

Here in Qatar, it's been different. The decisive moments from the underdogs have largely come in the second half of games.

They are the ones finishing games strongly, and the new rule allowing teams to make five substitutions instead of three definitely helps.

Football is a squad game now - not just during tournaments but in the middle of matches too.

South Korea's amazing late success over Portugal was another totally unexpected result, but it was no surprise it was a substitute who scored their injury-time winner.

Idrissa Gueye and his experience will be a big miss. They already miss Cheikhou Kouyate who is better but not ready to start. So that is going to be a big miss for them.

You are going to be looking at young players like Iliman Ndiaye. He did very well coming off the bench against Qatar.

The manager gave him confidence with only four caps to start the match against Ecuador to be one of the forwards, this Sheffield United youngster is going to be one of the forwards who they are looking at to help them get the goals as well.

Anon: So did I just dream that Saka scored twice in the opening game and was MOTM? Rashford was poor 1st half against Wales, and got lucky for his 2nd, not world beating. 50/50 choice between them

Mark: A classic Southgate move to leave out Rashford from the starting XI. But if he comes off the bench and affects the result, Southgate will be called a genius.

  19. 'Playing Rashford would play into Senegal's arms'published at 17:38 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2022

    England v Senegal (19:00 GMT)

    Martin Keown
    Former England defender

He can leave Marcus Rashford out and he will if he wants to. He is quite ruthless and he will do what is right for the team.

Rashford makes for a fantastic replacement off the bench because his pace can frighten any defender. Pace is the ingredient that really frightens defenders, even top-level ones.

Phil Foden has to be the one that plays on the left for me and Bukayo Saka on the right. His two goals in the first game were world class. He's shown that he has gone to the next level. Foden has competition every week at Manchester City just to get into the team and he should play. He is very direct.

Playing Rashford would play into Senegal's arms because they want us to get into an arm wrestle. They want to out-strength us and we shouldn't allow that. We should stay away from that and punish them with our passing.

The food and drink venues lining the Box Park in Wembley are filling with England fans buzzing at the thought of a positive result in Qatar.

Luke Benton, from Watford, took a moment from pre-match banter with his friends to share his prediction that Harry Kane would score two goals to secure a 3-1 victory against Senegal.

He says: "I think the supply in to him will be better tonight".

Asked about Gary Lineker's view that Gareth Southgate should not start Kyle Walker in case he’s needed to perform against France, he calls for England to play their "strongest side at all times".

He does think that Senegal are a tough team and wishes them well, "but I hope we get the W", he adds.

His friend Harry West says Southgate has his support, backing the manager even if it goes to dreaded penalties.
