Budimir must have got a knock. It is a weird one as with penalties you would think to wait.

Dalić has taken Perisic, Modric and Kovacic off. All of those could have taken penalties. He's trying to get it done, that's what it's telling me.

Kaoru Mitoma's pass into the box is poor. A waste.

Japan sub Kaoru Mitoma has more energy than most players but he can't get away down the left.

Former Liverpool midfielder Takumi Minamino will presumably be down to take a penalty for Japan if this goes to a shootout.

But his last five have not gone that well.

The big screen at the stadium has just shown a fan jumping up and down in a Rodney Trotter mask... I wonder who will be the plonker if this game goes to penalties?

Luckily I've got some World Cup penalty stats for you.

The later stages of that first half of extra time shows that some of the fresher players can make an impact. You're looking around and thinking who can win us the game. When you have fresh legs like Mitoma, you're hoping he can go and win the game.

There's hope for a goal here yet.

At the 2018 World Cup, Croatia were the only team to win a match in extra time.

That was Mario Mandzukic's 109th-minute winner against England.

This is when Croatia have to be very careful. Don't give the ball away in those situations as Japan can hurt you on the counter.

Mitoma just kept going and going and going. He sees a little gap open and attacks it and it's a brilliant strike. It's a warning sign for Croatia.

Japan are going for it now. Kaoru Mitoma runs about 50 yards but then his shot is straight at the keeper. They have a corner.

    Marcelo BrozovicImage source, Opta

Marcelo Brozovic has attempted 101 passes in this game - it's the sixth time that a Croatia player has attempted 80 passes or more in a single match in the 2022 World Cup and more than any other player in this game (ahead of Dejan Lovren - 79 passes).

The Inter Milan midfielder's work has all been pretty much conducted 20 yards either side of the half-way line. Croatia really need someone to break the lines.
