    Japan 1-1 Croatia

Japan almost let Croatia in with a sloppy backpass but they just about deal with it.

You don't see many amazing extra time games. It might be an idea to go straight to penalties. It's definitely the next thing to be looked at I think.

How often do you ever see a really good extra time?

Zlatko Dalic might just think Modric is running out of steam and what is the point in keeping him on for penalties.

Ivan Perisic, now wearing the captain's armband, has two shots blocked from outside the box in quick succession.

Modric is getting a lovely reception as he comes off the pitch. It has not been his best evening but he is hugely respected in this stadium, he is a world class player.

You'd have fancied Luka Modric to take a penalty - but I guess 20 minutes is a long time to hang on if his legs have gone.

  8. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 99 mins

    Japan 1-1 Croatia

Croatia captain Luka Modric is coming off. Is this the last time we see him at a World Cup?

Lovro Majer and Nikola Vlasic replace Modric, who gets a standing ovation, and Mateo Kovacic.

You are so close to getting into a quarter final yet you can be so far away. Even on the pitch it is hard to find that balance if you are going to be fully on or reluctant.

Neither side is going gung-ho for this. Is playing for penalties ever a good idea?

There's a clash of heads between Takehiro Tomiyasu and Mario Pasalic from this corner. I think they're both OK.

  12. 'Modric can do something special'published at 17:02 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2022

    Japan 1-1 Croatia

    Jermaine Jenas
Former England midfielder on BBC One

One of the big things I would like to see with Croatia in extra time is getting Luka Modric a little bit higher up the pitch. He spent the second half playing at right back. He is the most special player on that pitch right now and he has the keys to unlock that defence or do something special.

    Japan 1-1 Croatia

Croatia have the best 100% record in the World Cup in games that have gone to extra time - with all three in 2018.

    Japan, meanwhile, have another corner.

    Japan 1-1 Croatia

Seven of Croatia's last eight major tournament knockout games have gone to extra time. Maybe they get paid per hour.

Junya Ito crosses and Shogo Taniguchi puts a stooping diving header wide at the near post. That would have been very tough to score from.

    Japan 1-1 Croatia

Ivan Perisic heads behind and Japan have a corner.

  17. 'Japan need to up their level'published at 16:57 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2022

    Japan 1-1 Croatia

    Rio Ferdinand
Former England defender on BBC One

Japan will need to raise their level. They were a bit laboured and didn't look like they wanted to get over the halfway line and put this Croatia team under pressure.

They had no spark in the second half and to get through this next period they need to change their game plan.
