It’s a very familiar story with the Netherlands. They play tidy, technically impressive football but a lack of cutting edge. Shame really but struggle to see them getting anything here.

    Netherlands 0-1 Argentina

No surprise that this is what Argentina's attacking thirds look like from the first 50 minutes of this match.

Messi literally doing half their work.

The game continues to be played at a very pedestrian pace. It occasionally threatens to burst into life, but all too infrequently. Suits Argentina.

If I was Marcos Acuna, I'd maybe stay under the radar for a bit. He's on a yellow and still pulling shirts and chucking himself about.

This is nice from Cody Gakpo. Not nice enough, though.

He drives to the byline and digs out a cross but it is meat and drink to Emi Martinez, who comes through a crowd to grab the ball.

Lionel Messi’s use of the ball has been absolutely perfect.

He gives his teammates the ball at the right time, not just when he’d finished with it.

An early half-chance for Argentina from a corner. Lionel Messi dinks it in and Alexis Mac Allister glances on, but only through a crowd of players and away from danger.

Not sure this is the intent the Dutch were after. Frenkie de Jong charges into the back of Rodrigo de Paul. Clear foul.

    Here we go then.

The Netherlands are going to have to come out here... and that will leave gaps.

Lionel Messi could well love those gaps...

It's all on the Dutch now.

Louis van Gaal has been proactive, sending on Teun Koopmeiners, the Atalanta midfielder. Steven Berghuis is also on.

The Netherlands are going to have to come out and play on the front foot and play forward earlier.

Louis van Gaal was criticised a lot for that at Manchester United and even some of the Dutch media have moaned that the play has been a bit slow and ponderous.

Argentina made just 179 successful passes in the opening 45 minutes - their lowest first half tally at the 2022 World Cup.

It takes just one pass to set up a goal though.

Netherlands can attack but they are not. It seems that they are scared of Argentina. Expect to see better from them in the second half.

The Dutch players need keep hope in their hearts. Just get the next goal and work from there.

Messi is 35 and coming to the end of his career but he is playing like a playmaker, that also makes him special because he doesn't have the pace to come and get the ball and dribble past players.

He is so clever and good with his vision. He has that quality to come and get the ball.

Watching that pass from Messi again. It just gets better with every view. He doesn’t even look for the player. Is he a Jedi?

He [Lionel Messi] has been making a difference at the top level for the last 15 years.

When games need to be defined he is the one who takes on the responsibility. He is a phenomenal footballer. Whenever he gets the ball the whole stadium stands up.

When I said I was confident before the game it was because we have Lionel Messi on the field. He is the only one that can really make things happen. His pass was unreal.

The Dutch are going to have to bring more to this party.

Garett: I always hate when the biggest showman in the match is the referee. Keep your hands out of your pocket!!

David: There will defo be a red card in this match the way this ref is going.

The best team are leading. I have been really disappointed with the Netherlands in forward positions. They have offered nothing.
