No surprise. The coolest man in the stadium just strolls up to the ball and whips it past Andries Noppert.

I think it’s game over now. The Dutch have got it all to do.

On the big occasion the little man just keeps rocking up.

Matty: Wow, that is some impressive whistle work from the referee. I reckon a good 30 whistle blows in about 40 seconds. Really strong lung work.

Wout Weghorst is thrown into the action by the Netherlands. Feels like a last throw of the dice. Depay is off.

Argentina make changes too. Germán Pezzella is on. He's a big man. Perhaps to combat the aerial threat of Weghorst. Nicolás Tagliafico is also on for Marcos Acuna, who was on a booking and will be suspended for the semi.

These were Messi's last five penalties before the one he scored today.

Number one is the spot kick he had saved against Poland. He placed the effort past Andries Noppert in virtually the same place.

Briefly, we have a protestor on the pitch. They weren't shown on screen, though, and quickly whisked away by security, so I can't tell you what message they were trying to send.

Argentina could hardly have asked for an easier evening.

After a nervy opening half an hour it has been a stroll.

Messi's dream looks like it is still well alive.

And this is where it starts to get nasty.

The Dutch will be a raging ball of frustration. Emi Martinez comes to catch a cross above Luuk de Jong, who turns and goes head to head with the keeper.

Memphis Depay is the man booked for getting himself into the thick of it all.

Messi finally has an international team capable of providing him a platform to prove he is the GOAT. Equal of Maradona with regard to dribbling, equal of CR7 with regard to goals, simply unrivalled in terms of passing, assists and positional sense. No argument, it's a privilege to watch him.

Lionel Messi just keeps producing. It was a really quality penalty. He was under pressure but he just whips it across the goalkeeper. He is in top form. His confidence and belief is flowing through his colleagues.

At 1-0, the Dutch had a chance. They'd not given Emi Martinez anything to worry about but all they needed was for something to break their way.

Now? I can't see them getting two goals.

    Lionel Messi

    Of course.

He doesn't rush. He strides up calmly and slots the ball into the corner. Andries Noppert barely moves.

That is very likely the end of this as a contest.

    Huge moment!

The Netherlands heat map from the first three-quarters of the match tells a story. Lots of the ball, but all in unthreatening areas.

They just need one chance though. Croatia proved that earlier.

A man in orange cursed as the Argentines hit the back of the net. "Don’t worry, it’s still early," his girlfriend reassured.

Orange football hats are bobbing up and down all over the bar. Before the opening goal, cheers erupted each time the Dutch keeper touched the ball.

Such is the support for little known Andries Noppert, his local baker has started selling cakes featuring the 28-year-old local hero’s face. "50-50" is how Luke rates the Netherlands chance of progressing.

"‘We don’t have stars, we have a team," Dutch fans frequently insist, but the performances of players like 23-year-old Cody Gakpo and veteran Memphis Depay have elevated their reputations (and price tags) on the world stage.
