The Netherlands will be very happy with this first 20 minutes. Lots of possession, all very calm and little seen of Lionel Messi. Louis van Gaal will be hoping it stays that way.

Just one or two little flashes from the great man as a reminder.

The tempo of the game is being currently dictated by the Dutch - they have plenty of space and time at the back.

Argentina can't get near the ball at the moment. The Dutch are really popping it about nicely.

The Netherlands starting to exert themselves a bit now. The passing is sharp, the movement good. Argentina in a holding pattern but being waved forward by their boss, Lionel Scaloni.

Jurrien Timber draws Emi Martinez into his first bit of work of the evening. He is out sharply to slide in and gather the ball ahead of Steven Bergwijn. Good idea but poor execution from the Dutch defender.

The Dutch are just starting to turn the screw. They play this way all the time and Argentina have had to change. You can see one or two teething problems.

First real sign of the Netherlands on the front foot.

They swing a cross to the back post, where Denzel Dumfries is lurking to nod a ball back in that Argentina win and clear.

It all feels a bit like two prize fighters circling the ring, lobbing in a few testing jabs.

We're still waiting for a first real shot. Argentina have been the more assertive, pushing into Dutch territory, but that Netherlands defence has held firm.

The ref has some work to do now. Steven Bergwijn is sent spinning by a sliding tackle from Cristian Romero. He got ball and a lot of man. Just a ticking off this time.

Messi has Jurien Timber all over him as he receives the ball on halfway. Doesn't want to give him an inch and chops him to the turf just to make sure.

Cody Gakpo has his first little nibble. He looks to dart away down the left but his control lets him down. Ball out of play, attack over.
