  1. Goodnight from Cardiff

    FT: Wales 1-0 Ukraine

It really is difficult to explain just how much this will mean to Wales football fans, players, staff, everyone associated with the beautiful game in Wales.

From Cliff Jones and the boys in 1958 to the present day, Wales have endured a lot of near misses and a lot of heartache.

Now they are going to a World Cup.

    Their dreams have come true.

But let's spare a thought or several and raise a glass to the Ukraine team and their fans, because they were incredibly unlucky, gave it everything and just found the Welsh defence in unbeatable form.

Ben Davies and Wayne Hennessey especially were incredible tonight and they, as much as match-winner Gareth Bale, have helped Wales over the line.

Thank you for following along with us tonight and enjoy the rest of your evening.

    That was horrible, absolutely horrible.

You're obviously willing the boys to do well, to play well and we had a really dodgy first half, we got away with it by going in 1-0 up.

We settled down in the second half and performed like we knew we could.

I just feel relief for the players as individuals, because I know how hard they've worked.

  5. 'Everyone needs to live in peace' - Zinchenko

    FT: Wales 1-0 Ukraine

Ukraine defender Oleksandr Zinchenko told Sky Sports: "Everyone of us gave everything today, we left everything on the pitch.

"The goalkeeper for Wales [Wayne Hennessey] did amazing, he is definitely man of the match.

"In general I don't think we deserved to lose, but that's football, it happens.

"Football is about emotions, we can bring some great emotions to our fans, but unfortunately today we didn't get the result we wanted.

"Everyone needs to continue to fight, as footballers we need to represent our country as best we can.

"Everyone needs to live in peace and we need to stop the war altogether.

"Today it's Ukraine, but who knows tomorrow, we need to stay together.

"I feel sorry for our fans, but I wish Wales all the best for the World Cup."

"We are going to enjoy the time with the fans now and enjoy getting there."

"We've been dreaming of this for a long time now.

"We've had to ride our luck at time, call on Wayne and defend for our lives, but let the celebrations begin.

"I'd love to say we were calm, it was tough, I got booked early on but I think we got it together.

"We've come a very long way, we want to make sure this carries on.

"The quality has gone through the roof, and a World Cup will be incredible to see."

    BBC News, Dnipro

This was perhaps one match too far for Ukraine and it’s passionate fans - Everyone watching here in bars and pubs across the country knew that, after what they’d gone through, almost the entire world - apart from the population of Wales - was willing them to win.

After dominating the first half but going in 1-0 behind, nervous fans here in Dnipro began to sense it wasn’t their day. As the Welsh defence and goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey, kept the blue-shirted Ukrainians at bay, supporters here could barely watch.

At the final whistle, some cried, some downed their beers. An off-duty soldier in the crowd led a popular chant of “Slava Ukraini” or Glory to Ukraine.

It is Wales and not Ukraine who will be going to the World Cup in Qatar. For the people of this vast country, a brief diversion, amidst the seriousness of war after Russia’s invasion is over.
