    Wow.

Great work by Patrick Roberts out on the Sunderland right and he sets it back for Alex Pritchard.

Great effort by all involved, including Sunderland for selling the tickets at a reasonable price.

The home side start the half on the front foot.

That Sunderland goal at the end of the first half puts Wednesday in a tricky position. Do they push for an equaliser that could leave them open or just settle for a 1-0 loss that keeps them right in it for the second leg?

Can they build on their lead or can the Owls find a way back into it?

What have you made of that so far?

Sunderland fans, your side seemed to grow into as the game went on and now you have a goal to lead on.

Sheffield Wednesday supporters, do you need to get your foot on the ball a little bit more? Saido Berahino has hardly had a kick at the top end.

  9. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:34 British Summer Time 6 May 2022

    Sunderland 1-0 Sheff Wed

Some end to the half for the home side!

It had been a cagey and tense affair before Ross Stewart gave the Black Cats the lead in the final minute of the half.

Sam Hutchinson found out to his cost that indecision is final as he was knocked off the ball by Stewart and the Scot did the rest, even though Bailey Peacock-Farrell saved his initial shot.

Alex Neil's side had been ending the half the stronger and that goal came at a great time for them.

    Ross Stewart (45+1 mins)

    LIFT OFF!

Wednesday defender Sam Hutchinson gets himself in a right mess dealing with a ball just inside his own half and Ross Stewart harries him off it before running through on goal.

The Scot's shot is straight at Bailey Peacock-Farrell in the Owls goal but he reacts quickly to tap home from an acute angle.

Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell certainly isn't in a rush to take his goalkicks, I'll say that much.

    Sunderland are rolling now.

Ross Stewart sees a shot blocked by Harlee Dean from close range and the home side then win a wide free-kick in a promising position.

Bailey Peacock-Farrell takes charge and punches clear for the Owls.

    This is more like it.

Massimo Luongo breaks through from midfield for the Owls and his low cross is well fielded by home keeper Anthony Patterson.

He gets the ball going straight away and Lynden Gooch's deflected cross has to be palmed over by Bailey Peacock-Farrell.

Liam Palmer swings in a cross from the right for the Owls.

Lee Gregory gets across his marker but it's at an awkward height and it just kind of bounces off him and goes through to the keeper.

The Sunderland fans find their voice again to try and get their team going.

They've got Patrick Roberts, Jack Clarke and Alex Pritchard who all have the skill to open up a defence but they haven't been able to get on the ball in dangerous areas yet.

Midfielder Corey Evans slices way off target as the Black Cats look for the opener.

Feels like the game just needs something to get it going a bit.

These teams finished one point apart in the table in the regular season and they're cancelling one another out so far.

Thirty minutes in and it's been a cagey affair so far.

Patrick Roberts had a pretty decent opening for the home side in the opening minutes but sent his shot from 18 yards straight at Bailey Peacock-Farrell in the Wednesday goal.

Sheffield Wednesday's strikers Lee Gregory and Saido Berahino ended the season in good form but they're yet to have a sniff this evening.

They both have good pedigree further up the football pyramid though and Sunderland will know they might only need one chance all night.

    Sunderland 0-0 Sheff Wed

I spoke earlier about how nerve-shredding these occasions can be and you can really sense that both teams are VERY keen not to make any mistakes.

MK Dons fell to a 2-0 defeat in their first leg at Wycombe yesterday and that leaves them with a mountain to climb in the second leg.

Both teams want to go to Hillsborough in real contention.

  20. Postpublished at 20 mins

Sunderland are on top at the moment but they're yet to really create a decent chance.

Wednesday boss Darren Moore will be pleased with how his charges are keeping their shape.
