“And then, the big decision happens with the penalty and I’ve spoken to Alex [Iacovitti] and he says he’s kicked it off Van Veen so it’s a big decision for the referee to make. After that we have chance after chance and we’ve got to take those.

“Liam Kelly pulled off a couple of really, really good saves but there’s a couple more where we’ve not hit the target and we’ve let them off the hook.

“I’m not unhappy with the performance because overall we’ve certainly controlled a lot of the game and we knew the tactic which Motherwell were deploying - which is fine, that’s what they’re doing - but we’ve got to make sure we actually go and take our chances, and we didn’t.”

Aberdeen manager Jim Goodwin tells BBC Scotland: "Both ourselves and Hibs have massively underachieved this season and I don't think we need to be told that.

"We've got a job on our hands here, I knew what I was coming into. Every big team at some point goes through a transition period and that's what we're going through right now.

"The starting 11 today are all under contract for next season, I went with the team that had something to go and prove, both to me and the supporters that they want to be here and be part of things for next year, and I thought for the first 45 minutes they were very good."

A disconsolate Dunfermline manager John Hughes tells BBC Scotland: "Emotions are raw, everyone is hurting.

"We need to make sure we are ready to take this club right back up next season and that's not easy.

"Lack of consistency has been our problem and when it comes to a fight we always seem to come off second best."

Dundee manager Mark McGhee tells BBC Scotland: "Today was a step back. The first half was as bad as they've played in half a dozen games.

"We had loads of time to recover [from the first goal]. That's more disappointing than the fact that we lost that goal.

"As long as it's mathematically possible, we won't concede but I think it's nigh impossible. What we have to do is go into the last two games trying to keep a pride, trying to keep our fans understanding that we're still trying."

Motherwell manager Graham Alexander tells BBC Scotland that he's relieved to finally see his team record a clean sheet after going 13 league games without one.

“The clean sheet has been a long time coming," he said. "Great credit to the players for that and we felt at half-time that if we kept a clean sheet we’d win the game because we felt we had the quality on the pitch at the time and also to come off the bench.

“I'm delighted for the players and everyone connected with our club today because I thought we showed ourselves in a really good light."

On his side's penalty, he said: "At the time I was hoping it was a penalty because I didn't really see it that clearly but I've seen it again and it was a penalty.

“I think the league table tells you that the teams are evenly matched, most weeks you see really tight results and comes down to moments. I think what the players did in the first half was show great discipline against the ball, we didn’t get loose, we controlled the opponent and we knew we had to go for it in the second half.

“I feel we’re going to have to take something from our next two games to take advantage of the result today.”

"It had 0-0 written all over it and then St Johnstone went and scored and then we managed to get back in the game. I think the fans were lucky to get two goals today."

St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson tells BBC Scotland: "We did create chances. We probably should've scored more. A lot of good aspects.

"It bodes well going forward. They've bought into what we're doing. We're starting to see that improvement.

"There are 14 boys I have to pay credit to. They're playing through injury, through injections. If we can add to the pool that we've got then we'll have a high energy, pressing team that can play good football."

St Johnstone manager Callum Davidson has been reflecting on the fact his side face at least a relegation play-off.

"It doesn't really change what our aim is," he told BBC Scotland about today's result. "It was going to be a tall order to finish 10th from where we were.

"I'll take that performance from last week. We're still looking over our shoulder and have to put really good performances in against Aberdeen and Hibs.

"We want to make sure we can win them and get into the play-offs with a bit of confidence."
