England boss Sarina Wiegman to BBC Two: "The first game in a tournament, it's so important to win and have a good start. We have shown different phases – some good, some not so good. We started not very good. We did a lot better [then]. In the second half we created chances but were too sloppy on the ball.

"We should have scored a couple of times and made it easier.

"Overall, I’m really happy. Don’t underestimate Austria. They’re a good, strong, organised team.

"It’s hard to say [if nerves had an effect]. We wanted to start well. We didn’t keep the ball well enough. We scored a good goal and had some more chances. I’m just happy.

"I'm not frustrated. I just think we can do better. After the first goal, we had a huge chance. We have to be a little calmer in the final stage."

What now for the players? "At first, recovery. And then we will review the match. It’s too early now."

On the atmosphere: "It was so incredible. It’s hard to have an influence because the players can’t hear you. But that’s what we want."

England manager Sarina Wiegman, who won the 2017 edition of this tournament with the Netherlands, has maintained her 100% winning record at the Women’s European Championships (7/7). She’s the only manager to have a 100%-win ratio in the competition.

England have won all eight of their matches against Austria in all competitions, scoring 23 times while conceding only once. The Lionesses only have a better 100% winning ratio against Northern Ireland (11/11).

Austria have lost a Women’s European Championship match for the first time, having avoided defeat in their only previous participation in 2017 (W2 D3, eliminated via penalties). Indeed, the Austrians didn’t trail for a single minute at the 2017 edition.

England matchwinner Beth Mead to BBC One: "Beyond words. What an amazing night to start the tournament with a win. I'm really happy to get a goal for the team.

"I was pretty sure [it was across the line] but you always doubt yourself when a bit of time passes."

On what Sarina Wiegman said afterwards: "I’d like to tell you we could hear what she was saying but it’s so loud we couldn’t hear what she was saying. We were all into Sweet Caroline. She'll probbaly have the debrief in the dressing room.

"Listen to the atmosphere, unbelievable."

England are now unbeaten in all 15 matches under manager Sarina Wiegman (W13 D2), extending the longest unbeaten run in their history. Over this period they have scored 85 goals while conceding only three in return.

The Lionesses have won a seventh consecutive match in all competitions, only going on a longer winning run as of April 1975 (nine games).

It was so important to get the win. In tournament football, it's about how you finish, not how you start. This is a huge moment - enjoy it, celebrate it, job done.

Wenninger, the right-sided centre-half, really stood out. She was superb, clearing up danger against a really talented England side. Austria dealt with England's changes really well but this has derailed their pathway.
