We’re creating chances. We just have to find the back of the net. Now the nerves are settled, we might see some more goals in the second half.

  6. VAR was an offside checkpublished at 21:00 British Summer Time 6 July 2022

    HT: England 1-0 Austria

So, we have had confirmation from the Professional Game Match Officials Board (PGMOL) that the VAR check for the England goal was for offside and not to double check the goal-line tech.

The goal stood regardless, which is the main thing as far as England are concerned.

Wiegman will be a little bit disappointed in England's start but I think it's natural, on an occasion like this when it's a home Euros, to see some early jitters. England have got on the ball, stuck to the gameplan and taken control.

  8. Postpublished at 20:57 British Summer Time 6 July 2022

    England 1-0 Austria

    Alex Scott
Former England and Arsenal defender on BBC One

They weathered the storm. Austria want to spoil England’s party. England grew in confidence into the game.

A lot of England’s play has come down the left. Our wingers come in and create problems for defenders.

    England 1-0 Austria

    Jonas Eidevall
    Arsenal manager on BBC One

Austria have been very compact and aggressive in defensive organisation. But they’ll need to go forward in the second half which might leave more space. I think that will benefit England.

England are halfway towards the perfect start in Euro 2022 thanks to Beth Mead's goal.

A lot of work still to do, though.

It should have been 2-0. What a huge save by Manuela Zinsberger.

    Huge save!

Austrian keeper Manuela Zinsberger produces a vital touch to clip Lauren Hemp's goalbound effort over the bar.

That could be absolutely crucial in this game.

Everton and England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

We've seen a switch of wings between Beth Mean and Lauren Hemp, with Hemp coming onto the right to see how she can perhaps breach the Austrians. They've been very stubborn since conceding.

It's not just trickery and goals, you have to earn the right to play. Georgia Stanway underlines that with a hard but fair tackle in midfield to stop Austria forging anything meaningful.

Excellent from Feiersinger there - tracking Lucy Bronze all the way back and winning her side a throw-in just as Bronze was about to cause problems. Feiersinger has been a stand-out on the pitch so far; she's athletic, technical and a leader.

England respond and Ellen White rises highest to nod on a cross from deep. She sends her effort wide of the post, though.

    England 1-0 Austria

A rare Austrian attack briefly has England worried.

It needs another big header from Millie Bright to prevent Nicole Billa getting on the end of a cross from the right.

The last few minutes, England have changed tactic. Beth Mead and Lauren Hemp have switched sides. Hemp showed her burning speed but unfortunately it took a little deflection.

It's an uncomfortable scoreline, 1-0. England haven't been at their best - Wiegman will remind them of that at half-time
