Midweek defeat to Airdrieonians dumped St Mirren out the League Cup

Another group, another Premiership side out.

St Mirren are playing for pride and match sharpness at home to FC Edinburgh after midweek defeat by Airdrieonians confirmed their League Cup exit.

Airdrie sit second on seven points but can claim first place off Arbroath in a in a top-of-the-table clash with a win.

Even with defeat, the Championship side's nine points may still be enough to seem them through in second.

  2. 'Such a poor start for Hibs'published at 14:25 British Summer Time 23 July 2022

    Quote Message

A club with the resources of Hibs, [fielding an ineligible player] shouldn't be happening. It's really poor. They hadn't done their job on the pitch anyway. It should've been a very comfortable group for them. It's such a poor start to the season for Hibs.

  3. Group Dpublished at 14:22 British Summer Time 23 July 2022

The only team not in action in this section is top-flight Hibernian, who can't progress after the Leith club suffered a humiliating points deduction for fielding suspended Rocky Bushiri in Wednesday's draw with Morton.

That means League 1 Falkirk can win the group by avoiding defeat at home to Clyde.

However, if John McGlynn's side lose, the potential victor of Bonnyrigg's trip to Morton could see the winning side finish top if goal difference goes in their favour.

  4. Group Cpublished at 14:19 British Summer Time 23 July 2022

Premiership side Ross County have a two-point lead, but three teams are still in the mix to claim top spot.

Dunfermline Athletic, who are in second, and Alloa Athletic, who are a point and place behind in third, both meet at East End Park.

If County fail to beat East Fife at home, Dunfermline could capitalise with their superior goal difference.

Partick Thistle and Kilmarnock occupy the top spots in Group B

Top-flight Kilmarnock trail Partick Thistle by a point at the top of Group B, but a win for Derek McInnes' side at home to Stenhousemuir will guarantee progression even if they finish second.

A shock win for the League 2 side, though, would give them a sniff of progression.

Meanwhile, victory for Thistle over Montrose at Firhill will see the Championship go through in top spot. Even a draw should be enough.

  7. Group Apublished at 14:09 British Summer Time 23 July 2022

Aberdeen play Raith Rovers on Sunday in their final group game. Jim Goodwin's men are guaranteed at least second and look pretty certain to progress.

However, Stirling Albion can leapfrog Rovers into second for a day at least by beating Peterhead.

That would take Stirling to eight points, which is still unlikely to be enough to finish one of the three best second-placed teams.

  8. Permutations, permutations & more permutationspublished at 14:07 British Summer Time 23 July 2022

You're going to hear the word 'permutations' a lot today. That's because there are a lot of different permutations.

I'm going to try my best to not fry your brain - and mine - by going through every group and attempting to explain the state of play in each section.

A reminder that all group winners progress to the last 16 with the three best runners-up. So far, only Annan Athletic are definitely through.

    Okay, deep breath...
