  4. AFC Wimbledon - 'Targeting a play-off tilt'published at 16:24 British Summer Time 29 July 2022

League Two (2021-22: 23rd in League One)

    BBC Sport

The writing had been on the wall for a while, but that made the Dons’ relegation from League One last season no less depressing.

After three skin-of-their-teeth survivals )the club only avoided the drop by a combined seven points in the last two seasons) they finally succumbed after a wretched campaign back at Plough Lane last term that yielded only six wins, and included a run of 27 games without one.

Interim boss Mark Bowen didn’t hang about to see whether he’d be offered the role permanently, taking another job, having replaced Mark Robinson for the final fruitless seven matches, as the Dons went down for the first time since being formed by fans in 2002.

Johnnie Jackson is the “young and hungry” manager the Dons have charged with restoring some pride this season – their first in the fourth tier since 2015-16.

His summer signings have been an astute mix of experience, continuity and promise. Alex Pearce and Wales full-back Chris Gunter will bring nous to the defence, striker Josh Davison is a known quantity from Jackson’s time at Charlton, captain Alex Woodyard has a new deal, while Paris Maghoma, 6ft 9in forward Kyle Hudlin and Zach Robinson bring the fearlessness of youth to a campaign that will target a tilt at the play-offs.

  5. Barrow AFC - 'A feeling they could outperform predictions'published at 16:21 British Summer Time 29 July 2022

    League Two (2021-22: 22nd)

    Adam Johnson
    BBC Radio Cumbria Sport

It was another summer of change for Barrow following the conclusion of the 2021-22 season.

Despite all the early promise Barrow just never really got going under the guidance of Mark Cooper, while Phil Brown came in to somewhat steady the ship and did just enough to see the side over the line to survival.

The appointment of Pete Wild has been taken on board massively by the support at the club.

Wild, along with new sporting director Iain Wood and assistant manager Adam Temple, has created an organised atmosphere around the club's on-field activities.

Recruitment has seemed good from the off - Wild's ideology of two players for every position has seen a very balanced squad created and, at the time of writing, they are only maybe a couple of additions away from being the finished picture.

Barrow have been handed a tough start to the campaign fixture wise, but there is a feeling that, should they weather the early storm that has been thrown their way, they will surprise the early-season predictions.

Former Manchester City, Blackburn and Stoke boss Mark Hughes will be starting his first full season in charge of Bradford City

If there was excitement last summer for the season ahead at Valley Parade, then this year that anticipation has reached fever pitch.

Mark Hughes showed glimmers of what fans could expect with five victories in his 12 games in charge last season, after the former Manchester United forward arrived in February.

After a disappointing 14th-place finish last term City have gone big in the transfer market, with no fewer than 14 new faces arriving in BD8, including the eye-catching arrival of former Hull City captain Richie Smallwood - who has made 243 career Championship appearances.

A mix of good quality League Two experience, accomplished heads from across the Football League and a manager of Hughes’ stature means this coming season does feel like now or never for the Bantams.

  7. Carlisle United – ‘A much more optimistic backdrop’published at 16:15 British Summer Time 29 July 2022

Carlisle United were last promoted in 2006, under the guidance of Paul Simpson. In fact the Cumbrian’s helped The Cumbrians to their past two promotions, having also taken them up through the Conference play-offs in 2005.

Simpson returned to the club last season to steer the club comfortably away from the very real threat of relegation – the 3-0 defeat by Swindon prior to his arrival had left many supporters fearing falling out of the EFL was inevitable – and embarks on this campaign against a much more optimistic backdrop.

Six-foot-nine inch Czech goalkeeper Tomas Holy’s looked a colossus in every sense during pre-season, and 21-year-old striker Ryan Edmondson – who worked with Simpson during his time with England’s under-20 side – gives United much more of a focal point in attack.

A first promotion in 17 years still looks unlikely this term, but under Simpson, nothing should ever be ruled out.

  8. Colchester United – ‘Injuries could leave U’s short-handed’published at 16:12 British Summer Time 29 July 2022

    League Two (2021-22: 15th)

    Glenn Speller
    BBC Essex sport

A strong finish to last season had Colchester in the top 10 of the League Two form table and 17 points clear of relegation.

Having so many players under contract meant it was always likely to be a quiet summer in terms of recruitment, but the squad looks small and - with it being made clear there is very little wriggle room within the budget - a handful of injuries could leave them short-handed.

Wayne Brown and his coaching staff were key in getting the U’s away from trouble last season but they will again be looking to Freddie Sears to supply the bulk of the goals, and hanging onto midfielder Noah Chilvers could be vital to their hopes following the loss of Brendan Wiredu to Fleetwood.

The signing of Alex Newby from Rochdale looks a smart piece of business - after he starred twice against Colchester last year - but with the lack of squad depth, keeping everyone fit is going to be important.

  9. Crawley Town - 'Expectations and optimism both high'published at 16:09 British Summer Time 29 July 2022

    League Two (2021-22: 12th)

    Gary Smith
Crawley Town reporter for BBC Radio Sussex and BBC Radio Surrey

After a couple of seasons of mid-table solidity, expectations and optimism are both high in West Sussex for the new season.

A new ownership team is in place as well as a new management team and lots of new signings - including the capture of last season's League Two top scorer Dom Telford, which is a real indication of what the Reds are looking to achieve over the next couple of seasons.

The feeling among fans is that Crawley could really make a push for the top 10 or above this season, and a lot of supporters will be disappointed if this end result is not achieved.

Crawley have shown glimpses of their real potential over the last couple of years and I feel that if this squad can hit the ground running, then a place in the promotion shake-up at the end of the season could easily be achievable.

My prediction is that the Reds will finish seventh come the end of the season.

  10. Crewe Alexandra – Can youngsters turn potential into performances?published at 16:06 British Summer Time 29 July 2022

League Two (2021-22: 24th in League One)

    Graham McGarry
Crewe Alexandra commentator, BBC Radio Stoke

After one of their worst ever seasons in recent history, Crewe Alexandra will be hoping that their new managerial team of Alex Morris and Lee Bell can transform the fortunes of a club that they have both been long-associated with.

Relegation to League Two has meant the playing squad has required a major overhaul, and while there's been half-a-dozen new additions before the big kick-off, I'm expecting more arrivals before the August transfer window shuts.

New signings Conor Thomas, Rodney McDonald, Kelvin Mellor, Courtney Baker-Richardson, and Charlie Colkett will all bring much-needed experience to the home dressing room.

If some of the club’s highly rated youngsters can then transfer potential into performances, it could turn out to be a short visit to League Two.

There were calls for big changes at the end of last season as Doncaster’s inevitable relegation to League Two was confirmed. And there have been - just not in the manager’s chair.

Gary McSheffrey took over mid-season after Richie Wellens’ departure and despite not being able to turnaround a sinking ship, the man elevated from youth coach to the first team has the backing of the Rovers board for a promotion push this term.

New staff and players have been recruited to assist McSheffrey but the biggest change is the introduction of a head of football operations role, and the appointment of club playing legend James Coppinger into that post.

The signing of experienced attacking midfielder Lee Tomlin is a real coup for Rovers, and with new arrivals George Miller and Luke Molyneux impressing in pre-season, there’s a growing confidence around the new city of Doncaster that an immediate return to League One could be achieved.

  12. Four hours to go - Exeter plot success from 'bottom of food chain'published at 16:00 British Summer Time 29 July 2022

Having been promoted to League One last season, fan-owned club Exeter City are experiencing the hard facts of life as they prepare for their first season in the third tier in a decade.

With no rich benefactor to bankroll them, the club has to make ends meet from what they can earn on matchdays and money they can generate from transfers.

  13. Gillingham - 'Fans may need to be patient'published at 15:57 British Summer Time 29 July 2022

League Two (2021-22: 21st in League One)

    Matt Cole
    BBC Radio Kent

Gillingham pulled off something of a coup when they persuaded former Millwall and Cardiff manager Neil Harris to take over from Steve Evans at Priestfield. He inherited a threadbare and demoralised squad in January and steered them from 10 points adrift of safety to within goal difference of staying in League One in May.

Any ambitions of an immediate return to the third division will depend on how successfully Harris can complete an overhaul of the playing squad - with upwards of 15 new faces expected at Priestfield – and fashion them into a cohesive unit.

Supporters have already been warned the budget for this year won’t be among the top seven in League Two, so they may need to be patient as the fourth tier is a much tougher challenge than when Gills were last there nearly a decade ago.

  14. Grimsby Town - 'Mariners eye top-half finish'published at 15:54 British Summer Time 29 July 2022

League Two (2021-22: 6th in National League)

    John Tondeur
    BBC Radio Humberside

The euphoria from Grimsby Town’s National League play-off campaign has hardly had time to fade among the supporters.

The Mariners scored late extra-time goals in all three games to seal an unlikely return to the EFL at the first time of asking.

They have had less than seven weeks to prepare for league football but, despite losing Ben Fox, have managed to hold on to the majority of the squad that brought them success last season.

The key could be whether they manage to keep striker John McAtee, who is already interesting clubs in higher divisions. They will also need cover for Ryan Taylor up front.

But with almost 6,000 season tickets sold, popular new owners and a positive atmosphere around Blundell Park, Grimsby are hoping for a good season and a top-half finish at least.

  15. Harrogate Town - 'Weaver no longer wants side to be plucky underdogs'published at 15:51 British Summer Time 29 July 2022

    League Two (2021-22: 19th)

    Tim Steere
BBC Radio York's Harrogate Town commentator

This will be Harrogate Town’s third season in the English Football League and manager Simon Weaver has rung in the changes with 10 new arrivals.

Harrogate have defied the odds in recent years to get to where they are - but Weaver is ambitious. He wants to take the North Yorkshire club up the table and not be seen as plucky underdogs anymore.

Their previous finishes in League Two were 14th and 19th.

Keeping Luke Armstrong on a new deal was great business. Not being able to bring back Jack Diamond is a blow, but with Jack Muldoon, Alex Pattison and George Thomson on the books, plus Matty Daly on loan, they do have attacking threats.

But it’s defensively where Weaver was most concerned at the end of last season as they slipped from third to 19th place.

If that gets tightened up, then they have a chance of improving on last season's finish.

  16. Hartlepool United - 'Hartley's side impressive in pre-season'published at 15:49 British Summer Time 29 July 2022

Former Celtic and Hearts midfielder Paul Hartley is the new man in charge at Victoria Park

After a successful first season back in the EFL last term, Hartlepool United will be hoping to kick on again this time around in League Two, but they do so with an almost brand new side, as well as a new management team.

Ex-Celtic man Paul Hartley arrived from Cove Rangers during the summer, replacing former boss Graeme Lee, who was sacked 48 hours before the final game of last season.

Hartley’s job was made harder initially with a number of key players out of contract, including last season’s top scorer, Luke Molyneux, who moved to Doncaster Rovers.

That’s led to a huge rebuilding job, with a number of signings following Hartley from north of the border.

In pre-season they’ve looked impressive and the early signs are encouraging, but Pools' ambition of reaching the play-offs will depend on how those new signings adapt to life in the EFL.

  17. Leyton Orient - 'Will like their chances of top 10 finish'published at 15:45 British Summer Time 29 July 2022

    League Two (2021-22: 13th)

    Luke De Costa
    BBC Sport

    Darren PratleyImage source, Getty Images

Despite inconsistency on the pitch last season there is hope for Leyton Orient, as they enter their fourth season in League Two and first full campaign under manager Richie Wellens.

The O’s were teetering on the edge of the relegation zone when the 42-year-old took the reins at Brisbane Road in March, having not won a game in 14 outings. With renewed optimism in the side he guided them to seven wins from their last 13, scoring 20 goals in the process – quadrupling their 2022 goal tally – for a 13th-place finish.

Key squad members from last season return for another crack at promotion, but top scorer Aaron Drinan will miss the start of the new campaign through injury. However, Wellens has plenty of attacking options and the additions of QPR youngster Charlie Kelman and midfielder George Moncur, who arrives with Championship experience, provide much-needed depth.

Despite a relatively flat pre-season the O’s will be looking to make a strong start and, if they can stay healthy through until next spring, they will like their chances of a top 10 finish.

  18. Mansfield Town - 'Riding on the crest of a wave'published at 15:42 British Summer Time 29 July 2022

    League Two (2021-22: 7th)

    Jake Garner
    BBC Radio Nottingham

After going so close at Wembley last season, all eyes are on the three automatic promotion places for Mansfield Town this campaign.

Nigel Clough has added quality to what is an already experienced squad, while a number of last season’s key players have signed new deals. No need to make wholesale changes after what this team achieved last season.

There are five new players, including two exciting youngsters on loan from newly promoted Nottingham Forest. Striker Will Swan and defender Riley Harbottle look hungry for a taste of league football. Hiram Boateng has been a standout player in pre-season who adds more quality and drive in the middle of the pitch.

The Stags are riding on the crest of a wave, which is reflected in their season ticket sales and buzz around the town - hopefully they can go one better this time around and reward their fans with promotion.

  19. Newport County - 'Finding consistency will be key'published at 15:39 British Summer Time 29 July 2022

    League Two (2021-22: 11th)

    Chris Wathan
    BBC Sport Wales

As ever, there's been a high turnover of players over the summer - five first-team regulars gone, while eight new faces have arrived - which means County fans are taking something of a step into the unknown when it comes to pre-season expectations.

However, there is a genuine feeling that the recruitment of players to match the high-tempo and progressive football James Rowberry is demanding will add up to another genuine shot at reaching the third tier for the first time since 1987.

The new man brought a greater attacking edge to the Exiles last term and, even with League Two's top scorer Dom Telford turning down a new contract to move to Crawley, Rowberry will hope the additions of Offrande Zanzala, former Cardiff striker Omar Bogle and on-loan Bluebird Chanka Zimba will ease any goalscoring concerns, given the creativity elsewhere.

Aaron Wildig should also bring experience and guile in midfield after stepping down from League One.

Finding consistency - both in matches and over the winter months - will be key to justifying the excitement about new-look Newport.

  20. Northampton Town - Can Cobblers recover from near miss?published at 15:36 British Summer Time 29 July 2022

    League Two (2021-22: 4th)

    Jake Sharpe
    BBC Radio Northampton sport

Northampton Town will he hoping to go one better this season in League Two after missing out on automatic promotion in the most unlikely of ways.

Bristol Rovers' 7-0 win over Scunthorpe on the final day saw them leapfrog the Cobblers on goals scored and a play-off defeat to Mansfield Town followed, but the precedent is set.

And the expectation is that Jon Brady’s side will once again be challenging right at the top end of the division.

A productive summer has seen the arrival of experienced striker Danny Hylton and much-coveted defender Sam Sherring, amongst others, as reinforcements for the squad that fell agonisingly short last season.

This season Cobblers fans hoped to be watching their side in League One, next season they will expect to be.
