How will your team get on?

Colin Fordham: Can I join this party a year early to get used to it? I'll let you guess which team I support.

Anyone? Colin's Twitter username mentions that he's a 'blue'. Southend fan, perhaps? Anyway, everyone's welcome here...

  2. Rochdale - 'Top half should be expected'published at 15:32 British Summer Time 29 July 2022

    League Two (2021-22: 18th)

    Mike Minay
    BBC Radio Manchester

"You won’t have me sat here and then in six months time say 'Do you remember that interview?'”

That was Robbie Stockdale’s answer when I asked him how he thinks Rochdale will do this season.

Although they won’t be making bold predictions or expectations there’s a quiet air around the Crown Oil Arena that this season has to go better than last.

The behind-the-scenes legalities continue to run on in the background, but they’re more settled, the finances have been stronger and there’s been some clever signings through the door.

They won’t say it, but I will. Top half should be expected of Rochdale this season.

Of course, we’ll be following them home and away across BBC Radio Manchester

  3. Salford City - Can new faces push Ammies on?published at 15:29 British Summer Time 29 July 2022

    League Two (2021-22: 10th)

    Mike Minay

Another year. Another season of promotion chat surrounding Salford City. But after three season’s of talk, perhaps there should be more of an air of scepticism.

There’s (another) new manager through the door which can either go one way or the other. Neil Wood has no experience of League Two football, but the players I’ve spoken to speak positively about his philosophy.

The Ammies are in a division that is increasing with quality. A couple of the players they have brought in have personal ambitions and targets that might just help get that extra percentage out of them as they prove their points.

Whatever this season brings for Salford, we’ll be there home and away on BBC Radio Manchester

  4. Stevenage - Can Boro upset more fancied sides?published at 15:26 British Summer Time 29 July 2022

    League Two (2021-22: 21st)

For the last two seasons Stevenage have flattered to deceive in the early stages and ended up struggling at the wrong end of table.

Manager Steve Evans came in for the last six weeks of the season and guided them to safety relatively comfortably in the end, and has spent the summer rebuilding the squad, making 11 signings in the process.

A pre-season that has yielded one draw and five wins, with West Bromwich Albion and Derby County duly despatched, indicates that Evans has perhaps come up with a squad that can see them at least challenging the upper mid-table places.

Expect Carl Piergianni, Dan Sweeney and Jordan Roberts to feature heavily for the Boro, with on-loan Norwich youngster Saxon Earley adding flair on the flank to complement Luke Norris and Elliott List, who are forming a formidable front pairing.

If Stevenage can keep the squad fit, there is no reason why they can't pose a threat to some of the more fancied sides in League Two.

  5. Stockport County - 'The future is bright'published at 15:23 British Summer Time 29 July 2022

League Two (2021-22: 1st in National League)

    Bill Rice
    BBC Radio Manchester

County ended their 11-year exile with promotion back to the Football League on the final day of last season, and have already been installed among the bookie’s favourites to make it back-to-back promotions this campaign.

Dave Challinor’s side spent big and went on a fine run to top the National League, with former Fleetwood striker Paddy Madden and ex-Bolton midfielder Antoni Sarcevic dropping down the divisions to play for them, before leading the Hatters back into the EFL.

With the backing of local businessman Mark Stott, Challinor’s experience in the dugout, a healthy competitive squad and a big fanbase regularly topping 10,000 at Edgeley Park, the future is bright.

  6. Sutton United - 'Keen to establish their EFL status'published at 15:20 British Summer Time 29 July 2022

    League Two (2021-22: 8th)

    Sophie Hurcom
    BBC Sport

From the outside, you would never have known that last season was Sutton's first in the English Football League after 123 years.

It's safe to say the south London club exceeded expectations, only narrowly missing out on a place in the League Two play-offs, falling short by just a point, and enjoying a trip to Wembley for the Papa Johns Trophy final.

Manager Matt Gray has spoken about wanting to prove Sutton are an established EFL team and he will be keen to show that last year was far from a one-off.

Among the players they've lost so far this transfer window, however, is influential winger David Ajiboye, who signed for Peterborough. Ajiboye was their joint-top goal scorer with eight goals and their second-best playmaker with six assists last season and his loss will be felt.

Sutton scored goals across the board last season but lacked a primary talisman, and while striker Kwame Thomas has come in from Wrexham and winger Josh Neufville has signed on loan from Luton, neither of them have bundles of experience at this level yet.

Pushing on and making it to the play-offs is the aim but in the words of Gray, the club hopefully won't become a "victim of their own success" as they go into their second League Two campaign.

  7. Swindon Town - Will data translate into promotion push?published at 15:17 British Summer Time 29 July 2022

    League Two (2021-22: 6th)

    Andrew Hawes
    BBC Wiltshire's Swindon Town commentator

Stability, say football sages, is the key to success.

The reality is League Two, for structural reasons, tends to have as much of it as a panicked hare bolting through Wiltshire’s countryside.

Swindon lost coach Ben Garner to Charlton and took a long time to decide the best replacement was right under their noses in assistant Scott Lindsey, who is well regarded by players and backroom staff.

Sweeping recruitment has been overtly data driven. The numbers clearly said 'bring me technical midfielders and ball-playing defenders'.

Up front, Swindon look a little light on goals, bar Harry McKirdy. Tomi Adeloye has the chance to prove he can carve out a career after a good season at Ayr in Scotland.

The question is can Lindsey - in his first managerial role - tie everything up with a neat bow and have another crack at promotion? We’ll see what the data says.

  8. Tranmere Rovers - 'Season could be rollercoaster for fans'published at 15:14 British Summer Time 29 July 2022

    League Two (2021-22: 9th)

    Derek Jones
    BBC Radio Merseyside's Tranmere commentator

Having just missed out on the play-offs last season, Tranmere will be aiming to step up this time round.

Their squad has seen a number of changes, with the experienced Jay Spearing and Peter Clarke leaving the club, and with serious pre-season injuries for Kieran Morris, Charlie Jolley and Tom Davies, preparations have not run as smoothly as manager Micky Mellon would have wished for.

Mellon has confirmed a more ‘risk-taking’ approach to their football with a system that uses wing-backs as a key feature.

One of last season’s successes, Josh Dacres-Cogley, will thrive with this and new signing Ethan Bristow, from Reading. has already impressed with his pace and vision in this role.

In the absence of Morris, Josh Hawkes will need to take on more responsibility for creating and taking chances, while the experience of Kane Hemmings up front will be vital if Rovers are to improve their goal return.

The squad already has balance and depth in defence and midfield, but there is still a feeling that a couple of more attacking options are required. The loan market may provide a solution to this.

Ross Doohan will be first-choice goalkeeper – his loan spell now a permanent signing - while 20-year-old central midfielder Reece McAlear has impressed since his arrival.

As for experience in the squad, then Neill Byrne and Jon Nolan bring just what the club will need.

I have no doubts that Tranmere will be competitive, but with the changes in squad and style of play this could be the start of a rollercoaster ride for fans.

  9. Walsall - 'Investment gives grounds for optimism'published at 15:11 British Summer Time 29 July 2022

    League Two (2021-22: 16th)

It's been another summer of upheaval at Walsall, and not only because once again they have signed half a new squad in the transfer window; the recent announcement that the club had been sold to new American-based owners was a much bigger surprise. The news brought a mixture of hope and trepidation, but the Saddlers have been stuck on the same cycle for so long – despite a previous ownership change – that many are happy to gamble on a different approach.

Michael Flynn has had time since February to impose his personality on the club and set a course on the playing side. It’s too early to tell which of the chorus line of new signings will catch the spotlight, but the arrivals of Andy Williams and Peter Clarke as experienced leaders to help the young players along may prove shrewd.

Of the existing squad, Jack Earing should be a growing influence after a strong first full league season, and Conor Wilkinson’s talent will be valuable – when he is fit again. For now, the biggest concern is the number of long-term injuries – including Wilkinson – already affecting Flynn’s squad. But the potential of new investment, along with Flynn’s proven record at this level with Newport, give grounds for optimism that the Saddlers can break out of their gentle downward spiral.

It barely seems five minutes since Nottingham Forest were lifting the Championship play-off final trophy at Wembley to bring the curtain down on the 2021-22 English Football League season.

But, with the final of the Uefa Women's Euro 2022 still to be played on Sunday, English men's football's second, third and fourth tiers are back... in July.

And the action starts in five hours time when last season's beaten Championship play-off finalists Huddersfield Town face Burnley.
